RBI Assistant Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Relaxations

RBI Assistant eligibility is straightforward on paper: Indian graduates with at least 50% marks, aged between 20 and 28 years, who can work in the local language of the office they choose. The details that cost candidates their application are usually the small ones, such as the age reference date, the passing-year deadline and the one-office rule.

This page follows the Reserve Bank of India's 2026 notification (Panel Year 2025) and explains how each criterion works in practice. The next notification will carry its own reference dates, so use the 2026 rules to understand how the recruitment works and check the new notice before applying.

Educational qualification

You need a Bachelor's degree from a recognised university or institution. The degree can be in any discipline, so commerce, science, arts and engineering graduates are all eligible.

Marks requirement

  • General, OBC and EWS: At least 50% aggregate marks in the graduation degree.

  • SC, ST and PwBD: A pass class is enough, with no minimum percentage.

RBI normally expects you to hold the required qualification as on the stated reference date of the notification. If your final result is pending or your marks are below the cut-off, you should not apply on the hope of fixing it later. Read how the notice treats percentage calculations, CGPA conversion and rounding before you decide, because candidates are often rejected at document verification on exactly these points.

Computer knowledge

The notification requires knowledge of word processing on a PC. You do not need a certificate to apply, but the Main exam has a dedicated Computer Knowledge section, so basic MS Word, Excel and general computer concepts are worth learning early.

Age limit and date of birth window

In the 2026 cycle, the age limit was 20 to 28 years as on 1 February 2026. That meant a candidate had to be born between 2 February 1998 and 1 February 2006. Age is counted on the stated reference date, not on the exam date or the date you apply.

The reference date moves with every notification. Use this simple check: take the reference date in the new notice, subtract 28 years for the earliest birth date and 20 years for the latest. A candidate who turns 20 only after the reference date is not eligible in that cycle, even if they turn 20 before the exam.

Candidates with RBI work experience

Years of experience, up to 3

Depends on experience

Relaxations are not added together unless the notification allows it. If you fall in more than one category, read the exact wording of the notice and keep proof ready. Resulting upper limits for PwBD are derived by adding the relaxation to the base limit of 28 years, so verify them in the notification.

Local language requirement

RBI recruits Assistants office-wise, and each office covers a state or group of states. You must be able to read, write, speak and understand the official language of the state in which the office is located. This is tested through the Language Proficiency Test, which is mandatory. A candidate who clears the exams but cannot demonstrate the language is disqualified.

The 2026 notification listed vacancies in these offices: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur and Lucknow, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram. Some offices also covered sub-offices, for example Raipur under Bhopal and Agartala, Aizawl, Imphal and Shillong under Guwahati. Choose an office where you are comfortable with the language, because the number of vacancies matters less if you cannot clear the LPT.

Nationality and other conditions

  • Indian citizens: Eligible without any additional certificate.

  • Other specified categories: Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of settling, and persons of Indian origin from specified countries can apply, but they need an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

  • One office per candidate: You can apply to only one recruiting office in a cycle. Duplicate applications can lead to cancellation.

  • Medical fitness: Appointment depends on meeting RBI's medical standards after the written stages.

  • Character and documents: Selection is provisional until document verification is complete.

Who may not be eligible

  • Graduates below 50% in the General, OBC and EWS categories: The minimum percentage is a hard requirement for these categories.

  • Candidates outside the age window: Even a few days beyond the limit on the reference date leads to rejection, unless a relaxation applies.

  • Final-year students without the degree by the stated date: Check whether the notice accepts a result declared after the application date. If it does not, you cannot apply that year.

  • Applicants who cannot handle the local language: They may clear the written exams but fail the LPT.

  • Candidates who give incorrect information: Providing false details at any stage can lead to disqualification or cancellation of candidature.

Fee and documents in brief

The fee in the 2026 cycle was Rs. 450 plus 18% GST for General, OBC and EWS candidates and Rs. 50 plus 18% GST for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen, with no fee for eligible RBI staff. Fees are non-refundable and may change in the next notification.

Keep these ready before you apply:

  • Photograph and signature: Recent, clear scans in the sizes given in the notice.

  • Thumb impression and handwritten declaration: Required in the format specified.

  • Educational certificates: Degree certificate and mark sheets showing aggregate marks.

  • Category and disability certificates: In the format prescribed by the government, if you claim a reservation or relaxation.

  • Age proof: Matriculation or equivalent certificate showing the date of birth.

Planning your attempt

If you are eligible, move on to the structure and syllabus. Those close to the upper age limit should plan around a single focused attempt, since there may not be another cycle available to them.which helps you judge whether you are on course for the sectional cut-offs. Always confirm the final eligibility rules in the official notification before you pay the fee.
