RBI Assistant Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains and LPT Explained

The RBI Assistant exam pattern has three stages: an online Preliminary exam, an online Main exam and a Language Proficiency Test (LPT). Only the Main exam marks decide your final merit, while the Prelims and the LPT are qualifying stages. There is no interview.

The pattern below follows the Reserve Bank of India's 2026 notification (Panel Year 2025). It stayed consistent with recent cycles, but RBI can revise sections, marks or timing in any notification, so always confirm against the official notice before you finalise your strategy. This page explains each stage, the marking scheme, how the numbers translate into time per question, and how final merit is formed.

Qualifying rules for Prelims

You must clear the sectional minimum in each of the three tests and also reach the overall cut-off for your recruiting office and category. RBI releases these cut-offs after the exam. Prelims marks are not added to the Main marks, so a very high Prelims score gives no advantage later.

Main exam pattern

The Main exam is longer and covers two extra subjects. The five sections carry 40 questions each.

Sectional timing and language of papers

Time is fixed section by section, so you cannot move back to an earlier section or borrow minutes from a later one. As reported for the latest cycle, the English Language test is in English only, and the other tests are bilingual in English and Hindi. Confirm the language options in the current notification.

Marking scheme and negative marking

Rule

Details

Marks per correct answer

1 mark in every section (marks equal the number of questions)

Penalty for a wrong answer

One-fourth (0.25) of a mark deducted, in both Prelims and Main

Unattempted questions

No marks lost

Sectional qualifying

You must clear the minimum marks in each section as set by RBI

Four wrong answers cancel one correct answer. This sounds small, but a section where you attempt 30 questions with 6 wrong answers loses 1.5 marks to penalty on top of the 6 marks you did not earn. Accuracy therefore matters more than raw attempts.

What the pattern means for you

  • Time per question is tight: In the Prelims, English gives about 40 seconds per question, and Numerical Ability and Reasoning give about 34 seconds. In the Main exam, Reasoning, English and Numerical Ability give about 45 seconds, General Awareness about 37 seconds and Computer Knowledge about 30 seconds.

  • Computer Knowledge and General Awareness are the fast marks: Questions are direct, so a candidate who knows the content can finish them in well under the allotted time, but only if the facts are already revised.

  • Sectional cut-offs can end a good attempt: A strong total does not help if one section falls below its minimum. Do not drop any section completely.

  • Prelims is about clearing, not topping: Aim for a safe margin above the previous cut-off for your office, then redirect effort to Main depth.

  • Selective attempts beat total attempts: Skip long puzzles and data sets that do not click within a few seconds, and come back only if time remains in that same section.

Language Proficiency Test

After the Main exam, shortlisted candidates take the LPT in the official language of the state for which they applied. It is a qualifying test with no exemption, and candidates who are not found proficient are disqualified. RBI has not published a detailed format in the sources we checked, so rely on the official notice for date, mode and passing criteria. Candidates who are already comfortable reading and writing the language should still brush up on formal written usage.

Final merit calculation

The final merit list is prepared from Main exam marks only, among candidates who have cleared all stages. Based on the structure of the notification, the process is:

  1. Clear the Prelims sectional and overall cut-offs.

  2. Score above the sectional and overall qualifying marks in the Main exam.

  3. Qualify the LPT for your applied state.

  4. Rank in the merit list by Main marks, office-wise and category-wise.

Worked example (illustrative): A candidate answers 125 questions correctly in the Main exam and gets 20 wrong. The marks are 125 minus (20 multiplied by 0.25), which is 120 out of 200. This figure alone is compared with other candidates in the same office and category. How the exact tie-break is handled should be checked in the official notice.

Time management and exam-day strategy

Section order and pacing

Because sections open one after another, you cannot choose the order, so build a pacing plan for each one:

  • English: Read the comprehension questions before the passage when time is short, and solve error spotting and fillers first.

  • Numerical Ability: Start with simplification, series and quadratic equations, and leave long data interpretation for the last third of the time.

  • Reasoning: Pick the puzzle set that has the most direct conditions, and attempt syllogism and inequalities quickly.

  • General Awareness and Computer Knowledge: Answer from memory and do not spend time on doubtful questions.

Older articles may still show previous exam patterns, such as different sectional marks or timings. RBI has also changed vacancy numbers and schedules between cycles. The only reliable source is the current notification on the RBI website. Official RBI website: https://www.rbi.org.in/
