RPF SI Eligibility: Age Limit, Qualification and Physical Standards

RPF SI eligibility is built on four checks: a graduate degree, an age within the notified range, Indian nationality and the physical and medical standards for the Sub-Inspector (Executive) post in the Railway Protection Force. This page explains each check using CEN RPF 01/2024, the latest completed cycle, so you can judge your position before an official notification arrives.

No newer official RPF SI notification could be confirmed as of October 2026. The 2024 figures below are a guide, and the notification of the cycle you apply for always overrides them. Two details, the age reference date and the exact relaxation rules, are reported differently across secondary sources, so they are flagged as such.

Educational qualification

A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a university recognised by law is the only academic requirement. Arts, science, commerce, engineering and professional degrees all count. There is no minimum percentage reported for the degree.

  • Degree deadline: In the 2024 cycle, the degree had to be obtained on or before the last date of application (14 May 2024), as reported. Candidates still waiting for final-year results were not treated as eligible.

  • Proof of degree: The degree certificate or final marksheet is checked at document verification. Provisional certificates are acceptable only if the notification says so.

  • Distance and open-university degrees: These are valid if the university is recognised. Keep the recognition details handy.

The essential-qualification date can differ in a new cycle, so read that clause before you apply.

Age limit and relaxation

The 2024 cycle set the age range at 20 to 28 years. The notification counts your age from a fixed reference date, and secondary sources report that date differently (1 July 2024 in some and 1 August 2024 in others). Check the notification directly before you calculate your age.

Upper-age relaxation is allowed for candidates in the categories below. The table gives the usual central-government pattern that applies to RPF recruitment, but exact years can differ, so verify them in the notification.

Category

Upper-age relaxation (indicative)

SC and ST

5 years

OBC (non-creamy layer)

3 years

Ex-servicemen

As per government rules (service period minus a set number of years)

Persons with benchmark disabilities

As per government rules

Eligible central government employees

As per RPF recruitment rules and length of service

Some reports quote higher relaxation for women who are widowed, divorced or judicially separated and for serving central government employees. Treat those numbers as unconfirmed until you see them in the official notification. Relaxation is allowed only on the upper age limit. The lower limit of 20 years is not relaxed.

How to calculate your age

  1. Note the reference date from the notification.

  2. Subtract your date of birth as written on your matriculation or equivalent certificate.

  3. Add any relaxation that applies to your category, and check that the result falls in the range.

Nationality and other conditions

  • Nationality: Only Indian citizens can apply for the post.

  • Category certificates: SC, ST, OBC-NCL and EWS claims need certificates in the prescribed format issued by the competent authority. An OBC certificate must show the non-creamy layer status as required.

  • Medical fitness: A medical standard is prescribed in the notification, and one source reports it as B-1. Confirm this in the official document.

  • Character and antecedents: Appointment in a uniformed force depends on a verification of character and antecedents.

  • One application: Applying more than once for the same cycle can lead to rejection.

Physical standards (PMT and PET)

These standards apply after the CBT. The PMT checks height and chest, and the PET tests the race and jumps. Both are qualifying.

UR, EWS, OBC

165 cm

SC, ST

Garhwalis, Gorkhas, Marathas, Dogras, Kumaonese and other notified groups

Female

Race

1600 m in 6 minutes 30 seconds

800 m in 4 minutes

Long jump

High jump

Chest measurement applies to male candidates only. Ex-servicemen are reported to be exempt from the PET but not from the PMT. Because these standards are tested in person, it helps to measure your height and practise the race well before the CBT result.

Who is not eligible

  • Final-year degree students whose result is not declared by the notified date.

  • Candidates below 20 years or above the upper limit after relaxation on the reference date.

  • Candidates who do not meet the height or chest standard for their category.

  • Candidates who cannot produce the claimed category, age or education certificates at document verification.

  • Non-citizens of India.

Application fee and documents

The 2024 fee was Rs. 500 for General, OBC and EWS candidates and Rs. 250 for SC, ST, women and other concession categories. A part of the fee is refunded to candidates who appear in the CBT, and the refund amount depends on the category. Confirm these figures in the notification of your cycle. Keep your photograph, signature, ID proof, degree certificate and category certificate ready.

How to check your eligibility

  1. Read the full CEN on the RRB website, not a summary. The current page for the Sub-Inspector cycle is on RRB Secunderabad page for CEN RPF 01/2024, and the force's own site is official RPF website.

  2. Check the post and the CEN number so that you do not mix up the SI and Constable criteria. The Constable post has a different age range and qualification.

  3. Match your degree date, age and category against the notification.

  4. Check your physical measurements against the PMT table.
