RRB NTPC UG Age Limit 2026

The age limit for RRB NTPC Undergraduate posts is 18 to 30 years, calculated as on the cut-off date specified in the relevant CEN.

This is lower than the RRB NTPC Graduate category, which allows up to 33 years. It's a common mix-up point for candidates researching both categories together.

Age Relaxation by Category

Category

Relaxation

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

3 years

SC/ST

5 years

PwBD (Unreserved)

10 years

PwBD (OBC-NCL)

13 years

PwBD (SC/ST)

Relaxations generally aren't cumulative. If you qualify for more than one category, the notification typically applies only the single highest relaxation not a sum of them.

Educational Qualification for RRB NTPC UG

You need a 12th pass (10+2) certificate or equivalent from a recognised board, with a minimum of 50% marks.

A few details worth knowing:

  • The 50% requirement is relaxed for SC, ST, PwBD, and Ex-Servicemen candidates.

  • You must have already passed 12th at the time of application. Awaiting results does not make you eligible.

  • Engineering diploma or degree holders, and Graduate Apprentices under the Apprentices Act, are not eligible for Undergraduate posts.

That last point surprises many candidates. RRB NTPC UG is reserved specifically for the 12th-pass level, so over-qualification through certain technical qualifications can disqualify you.

Typing Skill Test Requirement

Some RRB NTPC UG posts require a typing skill test after CBT 2. This applies mainly to Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist.

Key details:

  • Speed required: 30 words per minute in English, or 25 words per minute in Hindi.

  • Nature of the test: Qualifying only. It doesn't add marks toward your merit, but failing it disqualifies you regardless of your CBT 2 score.

  • Hindi typing uses Kruti Dev or Mangal font, as specified by the Board.

  • Certain PwBD candidates with specific disabilities are exempt, subject to a valid medical certificate.

If your target post needs typing, start building speed early. Practising in the days after CBT 2 results leaves very little runway.

Nationality Criteria

To apply, you must be one of the following:

  • An Indian citizen, or

  • A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or

  • A Tibetan refugee who arrived before 1 January 1962, intending to settle permanently in India, or

  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, or specified East African countries, intending to settle permanently in India

Candidates outside the first category typically need supporting documentation, verified at the document verification stage.

Work Experience and Medical Standards

There's no prior work experience requirement for RRB NTPC UG posts. Age, qualification, nationality, and the applicable typing requirement are the only conditions that apply.

Medical fitness standards do vary by post for example, Trains Clerk carries a stricter visual standard than Junior Clerk cum Typist, given the nature of the role. It's worth confirming your specific post's medical standard rather than assuming general fitness is sufficient.

Common Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming a degree satisfies the qualification. RRB NTPC UG specifically requires 12th pass, not graduation and some technical qualifications can actively disqualify you.

  • Ignoring the 50% marks condition without checking whether you qualify for an exemption.

  • Underestimating the typing test. It's a late-stage hurdle many candidates only start preparing for after CBT 2, leaving too little time to build speed.

  • Assuming relaxations stack. Most cycles apply only the highest applicable relaxation, not a total of every category you qualify for.

  • Skipping the post-specific medical standard, only to be found unfit after clearing both CBTs.

None of these are exam-preparation problems. They're planning problems, and they're avoidable if you check the detailed CEN early.
