Eligibility in brief
Educational qualification
Grade I Signal: A B.Sc. with Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, IT or Instrumentation, or a three-year engineering diploma or degree in a relevant branch.
Grade III: Matriculation or SSLC with an ITI certificate in the relevant trade from an NCVT or SCVT institute, or a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship. For some Signal and Telecom roles, 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics is reported as acceptable.
Age limit
Age is counted as on 1 July 2026: 18 to 33 years for Grade I Signal and 18 to 30 years for Grade III. Reserved categories get relaxation as per government rules. Full details are on our eligibility page.
Application fee and how to apply
Category | Fee |
|---|---|
General, OBC-NCL, EWS | Rs. 500 (Rs. 400 refunded after appearing in the CBT) |
SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, minorities, EBC | Rs. 250 (fully refunded after appearing in the CBT) |
Fee amounts are reported consistently by several sources but should be checked against the notification, since banking charges are usually extra.
Register on the RRB application portal of the region you choose, using a working email and mobile number.
Fill in personal, educational and post preference details.
Upload the photograph, signature and documents in the sizes the notification asks for.
Pay the fee online and download the final application for your records.
Common reasons for rejection include a wrong region choice, mismatched name or date of birth with certificates, and unreadable uploads.
Exam pattern
The selection is built around a single Computer Based Test of 100 multiple-choice questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer costs one-third of a mark. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. The paper is offered in English, Hindi and several regional languages.
Subject | Grade I Signal (questions) | Grade III (questions) |
|---|---|---|
Mathematics | 20 | 25 |
General Intelligence and Reasoning | 15 | 25 |
General Science | - | 40 |
Basic Science and Engineering | 35 | - |
Basics of Computers and Applications | 20 | - |
General Awareness | 10 | 10 |
What this means for you: Grade III candidates should give the most time to General Science, which carries 40 marks. Grade I Signal candidates need strong technical fundamentals because Basic Science and Engineering alone carries 35 marks. Because wrong answers are penalised, skip questions you cannot narrow down. Older pages may still show earlier-cycle patterns, so follow the official notification. See the RRB Technician exam pattern page for the full breakdown.
Syllabus summary
Subject | Important topics |
|---|---|
Mathematics | Number system, percentages, ratio, algebra, mensuration, time and work, basic trigonometry |
Reasoning | Analogies, coding-decoding, series, syllogism, directions, Venn diagrams |
General Science | Physics, chemistry and life science up to Class 10 level |
Basic Science and Engineering | Core science and trade or branch-level engineering basics (Grade I Signal) |
Computers | Hardware, software, networks, internet, office applications (Grade I Signal) |
General Awareness | Current affairs, Indian railways, polity, sports, awards |
The topic lists above are working guides built from the subject names in the notification and typical question areas. Use them as a checklist, not as an official topic list. The RRB Technician syllabus page expands each subject.
Selection process
Computer Based Test: The only scored stage. Normalisation is used to compare scores across shifts.
Document verification: Shortlisted candidates bring original certificates for checking.
Medical examination: Candidates must meet the medical standard for the post.
Reports indicate there is no interview or psychological test in this cycle. Minimum qualifying marks are reported as 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25% for ST.
Salary and career growth
Post | Pay level | Starting basic pay |
|---|---|---|
Technician Grade I Signal | Level 5 | Rs. 29,200 per month |
Technician Grade III | Level 2 | Rs. 19,900 per month |
These are basic pay figures under the 7th Pay Commission. Allowances such as dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are added as per rules, so the in-hand salary depends on posting city and is not an official figure.
How to prepare
Start with the pattern: Mark which subjects carry the most questions for your post and plan hours in that ratio.
Build the basics first: Revise Class 8 to 10 maths and science, and for ITI-based posts, link them with your trade theory.
Make speed a habit: 100 questions in 90 minutes leaves under a minute per question. Practise short, timed sets from the second week.
Read the news in short bursts: General awareness has only 10 questions, so 20 to 30 minutes a day is enough.
For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt RRB Technician online mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to decide what to revise next. Pair them with previous year papers to understand the real difficulty level, and keep an error log of every wrong answer.
Cut-off reference
Official cut-off marks are released region-wise and category-wise by the RRBs after the result. Cut-offs change every cycle with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat last year's figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them. Read more on the RRB Technician cut-off page, and verify every update on the official RRB website.
