SSC GD Constable Eligibility 2026: Age, Education, Physical

SSC GD Constable eligibility is among the simplest in central government recruitment: a Class 10 pass certificate, an age between 18 and 23 years on the reference date, Indian citizenship and the physical and medical standards set for the forces. Small details, though, decide whether an application survives document verification, especially the result deadline, the date-of-birth window and the domicile rules.

This page explains each eligibility condition from the official Staff Selection Commission notice for the 2026 examination, with the age relaxation table, physical standards and common disqualifiers. Rules can change from one cycle to the next, so always read the latest notice before applying.

Educational qualification

Candidates must have passed Matriculation or Class 10 from a recognised board or university on or before 1 January 2026. The result must have been declared by that date. A candidate who has only appeared in the exam, or whose result is still under process, is not eligible for that cycle.

  • Recognised board: The certificate must come from a board or university recognised by the competent authority.

  • Higher qualifications: Class 10 is the minimum, so candidates with Class 12 or a degree can apply if they meet every other condition.

  • Percentage or grade: The notice summary we reviewed sets no minimum percentage for the qualification.

Keep your original pass certificate or marksheet ready, because it is checked at document verification. Your name and date of birth in the application should match it exactly.

Age limit and relaxation

The age limit is 18 to 23 years as on 1 January 2026. A candidate must be born not before 2 January 2003 and not after 1 January 2008.

How to check your age

Count your age as on 1 January 2026, not on the day you apply. You must be at least 18 on that date, which means born on or before 1 January 2008. For the upper limit, add your category relaxation to the 23-year limit. For example, an OBC candidate gets 3 extra years, so the earliest eligible date of birth moves from 2 January 2003 to 2 January 2000.

Claim only the relaxation that applies to your category, and keep the supporting certificate in the format the notice prescribes.

Nationality and domicile

Candidates must be Indian citizens. Vacancies in CAPFs and Assam Rifles are filled state-wise and UT-wise, so you need a domicile certificate or Permanent Residence Certificate for the state or UT you choose. The Secretariat Security Force vacancies are on an all-India basis.

  • Choose carefully: The state or UT you select in the application affects the cut-off you compete against and the vacancies you are considered for.

  • Assam: The notice says Assam does not issue domicile certificates, so residence is verified by the district authority.

  • Proof of residence: Keep the certificate in the format the notice specifies.

Physical standards

Physical standards are checked at the Physical Standard Test, and the race is checked at the Physical Efficiency Test. Both are qualifying and carry no marks.

Standard

Male

Female

Height (general)

170 cm

157 cm

Height (Scheduled Tribes)

162.5 cm

150 cm

Chest

80 cm unexpanded, minimum 5 cm expansion

Not applicable

Race (general)

5 km in 24 minutes

1.6 km in 8.5 minutes

Race (Ladakh region)

1.6 km in 7 minutes

800 metres in 5 minutes

The notice gives separate height and chest relaxations for several groups and for residents of certain regions. Read the exact table in the notice for your category and region. Women candidates must submit a self-declaration about pregnancy status before the physical tests, as required by the notice.

Medical standards

Candidates who clear the physical stage go through a detailed medical examination. Weight is assessed under the medical standards rather than as a fixed number in the physical test. The notice carries the full medical standards in an annexure, covering areas such as vision, hearing and general fitness.

If you have a known health condition, read the annexure early and speak to a doctor before the physical tests, so that you know where you stand well before the call letter arrives.

Special categories: Ex-Servicemen and NCC

Ex-Servicemen

Ten percent of vacancies are earmarked for Ex-Servicemen. They must meet the definition and certificate requirements in the notice and submit the prescribed undertaking. They are exempt from the Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test but must have height, chest and weight recorded and must pass the medical examination. They are not eligible for the NCC bonus.

NCC certificate holders

NCC certificate holders receive bonus marks on the normalised CBE score: 5% of maximum marks for the C certificate, 3% for B and 2% for A, counted as of 1 January 2026. The bonus must be claimed in the application form and is provisional until the original certificate is verified.

Who is not eligible

  • Result awaited: Candidates whose Class 10 result was not declared by the notice date.

  • Outside the age window: Candidates born before the earliest allowed date after relaxation, or after 1 January 2008.

  • No domicile proof: Candidates without a valid certificate for the chosen state or UT where the notice requires it.

  • Below physical standards: Candidates who miss the height, chest or race requirement without a permitted relaxation.

  • Mismatched details: Candidates whose application details do not match their documents, or who give false information, can be rejected.

Application fee in brief

The fee was Rs. 100 for the 2026 cycle, paid online. Women, SC, ST and eligible Ex-Servicemen candidates were exempt, and correction charges applied if you changed details after submission. For the full cycle, dates and steps, read the SSC GD Constable overview.

The final word on every rule is the Staff Selection Commission website.
