SSC JE Eligibility Criteria 2026: Age, Qualification, Rules
Every year, some SSC JE candidates clear the exam and then lose the post at document verification. The usual reasons are a result declared too late, missing work experience, or a date of birth that does not match their Class 10 certificate. SSC accepts applications provisionally and checks eligibility properly only at the end.
Everything here is based on the official SSC Junior Engineer Examination 2026 notice dated 2 September 2026 and the addendum dated 10 September 2026, both available on ssc.gov.in.
The online application window closed on 22 September 2026. If you spot a mistake in your form, the correction window runs from 28 to 30 September 2026.

Nationality
The first SSC JE eligibility condition is nationality. A candidate must be one of the following:
A citizen of India
A subject of Nepal
A subject of Bhutan
A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Vietnam or specified East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia) to settle permanently in India
Candidates in the last three groups need a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India. They may take the exam before receiving it, but an appointment offer is made only after it is issued.
SSC JE Age Limit 2026
Age is calculated as on 1 August 2026. Your date of birth must fall within this range:
Upper Age Limit | Born Not Earlier Than | Born Not Later Than |
|---|---|---|
30 years | 2 August 1996 | 1 August 2008 |
32 years | 2 August 1994 | 1 August 2008 |
Post-Wise Upper Age Limit
Upper Age Limit | Organisations |
|---|---|
32 years | Central Public Works Department (CPWD); Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) |
30 years | All other posts: BRO, Brahmaputra Board, CWC, CWPRS, DGQA-Naval, Farakka Barrage Project, MES, NTRO, DoT (JE Telecom), IMD (Scientific Assistant), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying |
SSC accepts only the date of birth recorded in your Matriculation (Class 10) certificate. A mismatch between that certificate and your application form is a ground for rejection, and later change requests are not considered.
SSC JE Age Relaxation
Relaxation is added to the upper age limit. The table shows the resulting maximum age for both limits.
Category | Relaxation | Max Age (30-Year Posts) | Max Age (32-Year Posts) |
|---|---|---|---|
SC / ST | 5 years | 35 | 37 |
OBC | 3 years | 33 | 35 |
PwBD (Unreserved / EWS) | 10 years | 40 | 42 |
PwBD (OBC) | 13 years | 43 | 45 |
PwBD (SC / ST) | 15 years | 45 | 47 |

Defence personnel disabled in operations (UR / EWS / OBC) | 3 years | 33 | 35 |
Defence personnel disabled in operations (SC / ST) | 8 years | 38 | 40 |
Two points to note:
EWS: There is no separate age relaxation for EWS candidates unless they also fall under PwBD.
Ex-Servicemen's dependants: Children and dependants of ex-servicemen do not get age relaxation and should not select the ESM category.

Engineering degree | Where the post accepts a degree: BRO, MES, DGQA-Naval, CWC, DGLL, Ministry of Fisheries, and JE (Telecom) for eligible branches |
Qualification is where most SSC JE eligibility mistakes happen. Some posts ask only for a diploma (for example CPWD and NTRO). Degree holders should read the exact wording for each post in the notice before assuming they are covered.
Scientific Assistant (IMD)
The addendum dated 10 September 2026 revised the qualification for Scientific Assistant. Candidates need one of the following:
A bachelor's degree in Science with Physics as one of the subjects; or
A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Applications, Electronics, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics Telecommunication Engineering, Instrumentation, Information Technology, Telecommunication Engineering or Communication Engineering.
Candidates using the second route must also have passed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics from a recognised board.
Work Experience Rules
When it counts: Experience must be gained after completing the required qualification.
What does not count: Internships, training and research done while studying for the qualification are not accepted.
Proof: Carry experience certificates to document verification. Candidates who cannot prove experience by the cut-off date will have their candidature cancelled.
Can Final-Year Students Apply for SSC JE 2026?
Only if the final result was declared on or before 22 September 2026, the closing date of the online application.
The notice is strict here:
You meet the requirement if you can prove, with documents, that your result was declared by the cut-off date and that you passed.
Having your result "under processing" by the university does not count.
Completing the degree or diploma later, before document verification, does not make you eligible for this cycle.
Some websites suggest that final-year students can complete their qualification before document verification. That is not what the 2026 notice says. If your result came out after 22 September 2026, plan for the next SSC JE cycle.
Distance and Online Qualifications
UGC Regulation on Engineering Degrees | Engineering is officially a prohibited discipline for Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online modes; qualifications obtained via these formats are not accepted. |
General Exception Criteria | ODL/Online engineering qualifications are accepted only where explicitly recognized under specific applicable statutory regulations or court orders. |
IGNOU Specific Exception (Supreme Court 2019 Order) | B.Tech degrees and engineering diplomas awarded by IGNOU to candidates enrolled up to the 2009–10 academic year are treated as valid for recruitment. |
Post-Specific SSC JE Eligibility Conditions
BRO Posts
Gender: Open to male candidates only.
Physical standards: Candidates must meet BRO's physical standards, Physical Efficiency Test and medical standards, tested by BRO after the final result.
No reallocation: If you fail these tests after being allocated a BRO post, you may not be considered for any other post. Think carefully before placing BRO high in your preferences.
PwBD: BRO posts are not identified as suitable for persons with benchmark disabilities.
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)
Each post is identified as suitable for specific disability categories, listed in the notice. JE (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical) and Scientific Assistant posts are not identified as suitable for visually impaired candidates. JE (Telecom) is the exception and is open to candidates with low vision.
Ex-Servicemen
JE posts are Group B posts, so there is no ESM reservation. Eligible ex-servicemen receive age relaxation and a fee exemption only.
Category Certificates and Crucial Dates
Crucial Date for Category Status | Status for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD, or ESM must hold as of 22 September 2026 (the application closing date). |
Status vs. Certificate Issue Date | The crucial date refers specifically to your eligibility status on 22 September 2026, not the date the physical certificate was issued. |
EWS Income & Asset Certificate | Must be valid for Financial Year 2026–27, issued based on gross annual income for Financial Year 2025–26. |
Mandatory Certificate Formats | Certificates must strictly adhere to the official formats prescribed in the notice's Annexures; non-standard or incomplete certificates are subject to rejection. |
Documents Needed at Document Verification
Document verification is carried out by the user department after the final result. Keep these ready:
Matriculation / Class 10 certificate
Degree or diploma certificate and mark sheets for all years or semesters
Experience certificate, if your post requires it
Caste or category certificate, if applicable
Disability certificate in the prescribed format, if applicable
Ex-servicemen documents, if applicable
No Objection Certificate, if you are already in government service
Name-change documents, if your name has changed since matriculation
The SSC JE eligibility criteria 2026 are detailed but predictable: age as on 1 August 2026, a qualification with its result declared by 22 September 2026, and post-specific rules on experience, gender and physical standards. Check each requirement against your documents now, use the correction window if needed, and you can prepare knowing nothing will trip you up at document verification.
