Territorial Army Eligibility 2026: Age, Degree and Job

Territorial Army eligibility rests on four conditions: Indian citizenship, a graduate degree, an age between 18 and 42, and gainful employment. The Territorial Army Directorate set these rules for the Territorial Army Commission 2026 (TAC-2026), the officer entry for civilians, with online applications from 20 April 2026 to 19 May 2026. Age is checked on the last day of the application window, 19 May 2026.

The employment condition is what makes this entry different from every other route to an Army commission. The Territorial Army is a part-time force, so you must already have a job or business, and you must prove it with documents at the Service Selection Board (SSB). This page sets out each condition, the documents that back it up, who cannot apply, and how the separate entry for ex-servicemen officers differs.

Educational Qualification

You must be a graduate from any recognised university. The notification does not limit the subject, so a degree in arts, science, commerce, engineering, law, medicine or any other discipline qualifies, as long as the university is recognised.

  • Degree in hand: The notification does not mention any provision for final-year students. Because you must also be gainfully employed, most applicants already hold their degree; if your result is pending, confirm your status with the Territorial Army Directorate before applying.

  • No minimum percentage: The notification does not set a minimum percentage or CGPA for the degree.

  • Documents: Carry all educational certificates from Matric onwards to the SSB, along with self-attested copies.

Age Limit

You must be at least 18 and not more than 42 years old on the last day of filing the application. For TAC-2026, that date was 19 May 2026. Your age is verified from your Matric or Senior Secondary mark sheet and certificate, so the date of birth on that document is the one that counts.

Category

Upper age relaxation

All categories

No relaxation listed in the TAC-2026 notification

Many other recruitment notices give extra years to reserved categories. The TAC-2026 notice does not, so do not assume a relaxation applies. If your name differs across documents, bring a copy of the Gazette notification or an affidavit supported by newspaper cuttings.

Employment Condition

The notification invites applications from gainfully employed citizens, and lists "Employment: Gainfully Employed" as a condition of eligibility. In practice, that means a regular job or verifiable self-employment, backed by income proof. Every candidate must bring the latest income proof from the appropriate authority (Income Tax Department, Magistrate or employer) and a copy of the latest Income Tax Return filed.

Employment type

What you must produce at the SSB

Central Government, Union Territory, State Government or Semi-Government

Service certificate authenticated by the Head of Office, salary certificate and a certificate in the notified format confirming your character, that you will be made available for training and embodiment, and that you do not hold a key post

Private sector

Service certificate authenticated by the Head of Office, salary certificate and a certificate in the notified format stating the employer will pay any difference between civil and military pay and absorb you back on return

Self-employed

Notarised affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper stating the nature of your work and annual income, a copy of your PAN card and a self-certified character certificate

The government employer certificate also covers key posts. If you later become a key person in your organisation, the Director General Territorial Army can be asked to release or discharge you, so speak to your employer before you apply.

Nationality, Medical and Other Conditions

  • Nationality: Only citizens of India can apply. Both men and women are eligible, with separate vacancies and separate merit lists.

  • Medical fitness: You must be physically and medically fit in all respects. The notification refers candidates to the Instructions to Candidates applying for Commission in the Territorial Army (Civilian Candidates) on the Indian Army website for the detailed standards.

  • Provisional admission: Admission at every stage is provisional. An admit card does not mean your eligibility has been finally cleared.

  • Time commitment: Officers attend a two-month annual training camp and can be called out for longer service. This is not an eligibility rule, but it is a condition of service you must be able to meet.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Serving personnel: Members of the Regular Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, GREF, Para Military and like forces cannot apply.

  • Unemployed graduates: Without a job or verifiable self-employment, you do not meet the gainful employment condition.

  • Candidates outside the age window: Anyone below 18 or above 42 on 19 May 2026 for TAC-2026.

  • Non-graduates: A degree from a recognised university is compulsory.

  • Ex-servicemen officers through this entry: Former commissioned officers apply through a separate interview-only entry, explained below.

Service Commitment You Accept

Meeting the eligibility rules is only half the decision. The notification also sets out what you commit to once selected, and your employer needs to support it.

Stage

Commitment

Pre-commission training

Up to six months; you are commissioned only after completing it successfully

After commission

21 days of post-commission leave, then 30 days of training

Every year

A two-month annual training camp, unless you were embodied for more than six months in that training year (April to March)

When required

Call-out for military service for a longer duration, depending on requirement

Service in the Territorial Army does not guarantee a full-time career or a pension, which depends on embodied service. Pay and allowances match those of Regular Army officers for the period you are embodied.
