TNPSC Group 1 Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Tamil Rules

TNPSC Group 1 eligibility is decided by four things: your degree, your age on the reference date, your knowledge of Tamil and a few post-specific or category-specific conditions. Candidates often lose an application, or a whole attempt, because one of these was misread. A quick, careful check before you apply saves a lot of trouble later.

This page explains who can apply for the Combined Civil Services Examination I (Group I Services) conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. The details follow the 2026 cycle notification as reported, with year-specific figures clearly labelled. Rules and limits can change in the next notification, so treat the official notification as the final authority.

Key points to check first

  • Degree status: Final-year students are reported to be allowed to apply for the Preliminary exam but must show proof of degree completion at the Main stage.

  • Age reference date: Age is counted on a fixed date given in the notification, which is reported as 1 July 2026 for this cycle. Check it before you calculate.

  • Tamil proof: If you do not hold an accepted proof of Tamil knowledge, the notification sets a condition to pass the Commission's Tamil test.

  • Post-wise rules: The Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) post has its own degree preferences and age limits.

Educational qualification

Basic requirement

Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree from a university established by a Central or State law, or from an institution recognised as equivalent, such as a deemed university notified by the UGC. In general, a degree in any discipline is accepted for the common posts. A degree obtained through open or distance learning is usually valid if the institution is recognised, but confirm the equivalence rule in the notification for your university.

Post-wise preferences

For Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes), the notification gives a preference order that favours candidates with commerce and law degrees, with or without a diploma in taxation laws. Preference only applies when posts are allotted. It does not stop other graduates from taking the Preliminary exam for other posts. The Assistant Commissioner of Labour post is reported to give a preference to freedom fighters and their families. Some earlier cycles also preferred a postgraduate degree or diploma in rural services or sociology for certain posts.

Final-year students and result deadlines

If you are in the final year of your degree, check whether the notification allows you to apply and the date by which you must submit proof of passing. Missing that deadline can lead to cancellation of candidature at the Main stage, even if you cleared the Preliminary exam.

Percentage and class

No minimum percentage was reported in the sources we checked. A pass in the degree is what matters. If your university gives grades or CGPA only, keep the official equivalence certificate ready for document verification.

Age limit and relaxations

The minimum age is 21 years. The maximum age differs by category. The table below shows the limits as reported for the 2026 cycle for most posts.

Category

Maximum age

General (Others)

34 years

SC, SC(A), ST

39 years

MBC/DC (Denotified Communities)

39 years

BC (OBCM) and BCM

39 years

Destitute widows

39 years

Persons with benchmark disabilities and ex-servicemen

Persons with benchmark disabilities and ex-servicemen get a higher upper age limit. Reported figures include 44 years for general-category persons with benchmark disabilities and 50 years for general-category ex-servicemen, with higher figures for reserved categories. These numbers are tentative because sources disagree. Read the exact figures and the way service is counted in the official notification.

Commercial Taxes post with law degree

The Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) post is reported to carry slightly higher age limits for candidates with a law degree. Reported limits vary by source (34 or 35 years for general candidates and 40 years for reserved categories), so verify the figure in the notification before you rely on it.

How to check your age

  1. Find the reference date in the notification.

  2. Count your completed years on that date using your date of birth in the SSLC certificate.

  3. Compare the result with your category limit.

  4. Confirm that your minimum age of 21 years is also met.

Use the date of birth printed on your SSLC certificate, because TNPSC checks it during document verification. A mismatch between your application and certificate can lead to rejection.

Knowledge of Tamil

Knowledge of Tamil is mandatory for Tamil Nadu state services. The notification sets the conditions, and you can meet them in one of the following ways, as reported.

  • Education in Tamil: A pass in SSLC with Tamil as a language, or schooling or degree study in the Tamil medium.

  • Language test pass: A pass in the Commission's Second Class Language Test in Tamil.

  • Test within a period: Candidates without any of the above must pass the Tamil test within the time allowed after appointment, as the notification states.

The Main exam also includes Paper I, the Tamil Eligibility Test, with a qualifying minimum of 40 marks out of 100. This is different from proof of language knowledge and applies to everyone.

Nationality and other conditions

  • Nationality: The notification states the citizenship rules. Confirm them before applying, particularly if you are not a citizen of India.

  • Service restriction: Candidates outside the reserved categories listed in the notification who have completed five years or more of service from their first government appointment are reported to be barred, even if they meet the age limit. Read this rule if you are a government employee.

  • Medical and vision standards: Some posts require a visual standard and general fitness. The posts reported for this cycle mention a visual standard of grade III or better for revenue and administrative posts.

  • Physical standards: Posts such as Deputy Superintendent of Police and District Officer (Fire and Rescue) carry height and chest standards in cycles where they are included. They were not part of the vacancy list reported for 2026.

  • Character and conduct: Candidates must meet the character and antecedent requirements of public service.

Who is not eligible

  • Under 21 years or over the age limit: On the reference date, with relaxations applied where eligible.

  • Without a valid degree: A degree from an unrecognised institution is not accepted.

  • Without proof of degree at the Main stage: Final-year students who cannot show completion by the deadline.

  • Barred by the service rule: Eligible-age candidates in non-reserved categories who exceed the allowed years of government service.

  • Debarred candidates: Anyone debarred by the Commission or a public service body for malpractice.

  • Incomplete or false information: A wrong category claim or false documents can lead to cancellation at any stage.
