TNPSC Group 1 Syllabus 2026: Prelims and Mains Topic-wise Guide
The TNPSC Group 1 syllabus covers three kinds of preparation: a broad General Studies and Aptitude paper for the Preliminary exam, a set of descriptive General Studies papers plus a qualifying Tamil paper for the Main exam, and personality preparation for the interview. Knowing exactly what sits in each stage saves months of unfocused reading.
This guide breaks the TNPSC Group 1 syllabus down unit by unit, shows how many Preliminary questions each unit usually carries, explains where the Preliminary and Main syllabi overlap, and ends with a phase-wise plan. The unit structure follows the syllabus published by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission as reported for the 2026 cycle. Always confirm the final list against the syllabus document on the official website.

Honest note on the official syllabus
TNPSC publishes the Preliminary syllabus unit by unit, but the Main General Studies papers are described mostly at the level of broad subject areas. The topic lists for the Main papers below are therefore built from the official notification, the unit structure of the Preliminary syllabus and the kind of questions asked in earlier Main exams. Use them as a working checklist and not as an official list. The official syllabus is available at https://www.tnpsc.gov.in.

Key points to know before you start
Tamil Nadu content is a large share: Two Preliminary units are devoted to Tamil Nadu (economy and administration, and history and culture), and Tamil Nadu questions appear inside other units as well.
The Preliminary exam is a screening test: Its marks do not count in the final merit, but you must clear the cut-off to reach the Main exam.
The Aptitude part is SSLC standard: The General Studies part is degree standard, while Aptitude and Mental Ability is set at the school-leaving level.
Old pages can mislead: Some articles still show unit lists from earlier notifications. Match any list you use to the current notification.
Preliminary syllabus: General Studies
The General Studies part carries 175 of the 200 Preliminary questions and is at degree standard. The unit-wise question split below is as reported for the current syllabus. It shows where the marks are, which is useful for planning, but check it against the official document before treating it as fixed.
Unit | Questions | Topics to cover |
|---|---|---|
General Science | 10 | Scientific principles, basic physics and chemistry, life science, health, environment, everyday applications, recent inventions |
Geography of India | 10 | Physical features, monsoon and climate, rivers, soils, minerals, forests, agriculture, transport, population, disaster management, climate change |
History, Culture of India and Indian National Movement | 25 | Ancient and medieval India, South Indian history, socio-cultural change, national renaissance, freedom movement and leaders |
Indian Polity | 40 | Constitution, Fundamental Rights and Duties, Directive Principles, Union and State government, local government, elections, judiciary, rights bodies |
Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu | 50 | Economic structure, planning, public finance, monetary and fiscal policy, agriculture, industry, poverty indicators, Tamil Nadu development and welfare schemes |
History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu | 40 | Tamil society, Sangam and later literature, Thirukkural, Tamil Nadu in the freedom struggle, Justice Party, Self-Respect and Dravidian movements |
Where the marks are
Economy with Tamil Nadu administration (50), Polity (40) and Tamil Nadu history and culture (40) together make up 130 of the 175 General Studies questions. If you have limited time, these three units give the best return. General Science and Geography carry only 10 questions each, so they need steady revision rather than deep study.
Start with these topics
Polity: Learn the Constitution article by article for rights, duties, Directive Principles and the structure of Union and State government. Questions are often direct.
Tamil Nadu economy and schemes: Keep a running list of state welfare schemes, flagship programmes and recent budget announcements.
Tamil Nadu culture: Cover literature, the Sangam age, Thirukkural and the social reform movements as connected themes, not as isolated facts.
Preliminary syllabus: Aptitude and Mental Ability
This part has 25 questions at SSLC standard. It is the most scoring part of the paper for candidates who practise, since the topics are limited and the questions are predictable in type.
Unit | Questions | Topics to cover |
|---|---|---|
Aptitude | 15 | Simplification, percentage, HCF and LCM, ratio and proportion, simple and compound interest, area, volume, time and work |
Reasoning and Mental Ability | 10 | Logical reasoning, puzzles, dice, visual and alphanumeric reasoning, number series |
Because the Preliminary paper has no negative marking in the reported scheme, every unattempted aptitude question is a lost opportunity. Practise by topic first, then in a timed section.
Main syllabus: Paper I, Tamil Eligibility Test
Paper I is a 100-mark descriptive paper that you must pass with at least 40 marks. Your Paper II, III and IV answer sheets are evaluated only if you clear it. The paper tests everyday language skills in Tamil.
Translation: Translating passages between English and Tamil.
Comprehension and summary: Reading a passage and answering or condensing it.
Writing tasks: Essay and letter writing, along with grammar usage.
Treat this paper as a gate. It carries no merit marks, but a weak performance ends your Main attempt. Reserve a small, regular slot for Tamil writing practice throughout your preparation.
Main syllabus: General Studies Papers II, III and IV
Each of these descriptive papers carries 250 marks. They test the same broad domains as the Preliminary exam, but ask for analysis, examples and a clear structure in your answers. The table below groups themes by paper as reported by preparation sources. The split is indicative, so confirm it against the official document.
Paper | Main themes (indicative) | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Paper II: General Studies I | Modern Indian history and culture, Indian society and social issues, Tamil Nadu society, ethics and integrity | Modern history and social issues in Tamil Nadu |
Paper III: General Studies II | Polity and governance, international relations, science and technology, Tamil society and culture | Governance topics and current affairs |
Paper IV: General Studies III | Geography, environment and disaster management, Indian and Tamil Nadu economy | Economy with state data, environment issues |
Some sources place ethics, integrity and aptitude in Paper IV rather than Paper II. This is exactly why the official syllabus must be your final reference. Whichever paper they sit in, plan for them as a block of their own.
How Main answers differ from Preliminary preparation
Depth over recall: You need causes, effects, examples and a balanced conclusion, not only facts.
Tamil Nadu angle: Link national topics to the state situation wherever relevant.
Current affairs: Recent policies, committees, reports and schemes support analytical answers.
Overlap between Preliminary and Main
A large part of the Main syllabus builds on Preliminary units. Study these once, at Main depth, and you cover both stages.
Area | Preliminary | Main | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
History and culture | Facts, dates, movements | Analytical answers on modern history and Tamil society | Make timeline notes, then add cause and effect points |
Polity | Articles, institutions | Governance and policy analysis | Learn articles first, then practise short answers |
Economy | Concepts, schemes, data | Indian and Tamil Nadu economy analysis | Maintain one data sheet and update it monthly |
Geography and environment | Physical and Indian geography | Environment and disaster management | Link maps with current events |
Aptitude and reasoning | 25 questions, SSLC level | No separate paper in the reported scheme | Practise early, then reduce time after the Preliminary stage |
Interview: is there a syllabus?
No. The interview is a 100-mark personality test with no fixed syllabus. Panels typically explore your background, your optional interests, awareness of Tamil Nadu and national issues, and your reasoning on administrative situations. Prepare by revising your own application details, reading about the posts you have listed as preferences and practising calm, structured answers.
How to cover the syllabus in phases
Weeks 1 to 8, foundation: Finish textbooks for polity, history, geography and the Tamil Nadu units. Begin aptitude practice and a daily newspaper habit.
Weeks 9 to 14, depth: Add economy, science and the Tamil Nadu schemes list. Start monthly current affairs notes and weekly short-answer writing.
Weeks 15 to 20, practice: Take unit-wise tests, then 20-minute sectional tests, and solve previous year questions to learn the pattern of the Preliminary paper.
Final phase, mocks and revision: Attempt full-length Preliminary mocks, analyse each one the same day, and revise from an error log.
