TNPSC Group 2 Eligibility 2026: Age Limit and Qualification

TNPSC Group 2 eligibility rests on four checks: Indian citizenship, a recognised degree, the age limit for your post and community, and the ability to clear the Tamil Eligibility Test in the Mains. The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission fills these posts through the Combined Civil Services Examination-II (Group II and IIA Services). For the current cycle, Notification No. 07/2026 was published on 11 August 2026, and age is counted as on 1 July 2026.

This page explains each condition in plain terms, shows the community-wise age rules that make TNPSC different from most recruiting bodies, lists post-specific requirements, and flags the common mistakes that lead to rejection at certificate verification. Applications for the 2026 cycle closed on 9 September 2026, so use this page to confirm your standing before the 1 November 2026 prelims or to plan for the next notification.

Nationality and Domicile

Candidates must be citizens of India. You do not need to be a Tamil Nadu resident to apply, but domicile affects which seats you can compete for.

  • Tamil Nadu communities: Candidates belonging to communities notified under Tamil Nadu's reservation policy can claim community reservation and the related age concessions with a valid community certificate.

  • Candidates from other states: They are treated as "Others" and compete for open-competition seats under the general age limit, even if they belong to a reserved category in their home state.

Educational Qualification

Most Group II and Group IIA posts need a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a university recognised by the UGC. A degree obtained through distance or open learning is generally accepted if the university and programme are recognised, but check the equivalence rules in the notification for your specific course.

When You Must Hold the Degree

Candidates must possess the prescribed qualification on the date of the notification, which was 11 August 2026 for the current cycle. Final-year students who had not completed their degree by that date should not count on being accepted, because the qualification is verified against your certificates during certificate verification. If your result was declared after the notification date, check the exact wording of the notification before relying on it.

Post-wise Qualification Requirements

A few posts ask for a specific degree or give preference to particular subjects. The table below shows the main examples from the current notification.

"Preference" means that when candidates are otherwise equal, the preferred qualification can decide allotment. It does not stop other graduates from applying. Read the post-wise qualification sections of the notification for the exact wording, since a single post can have more than one post code with different rules.

TNPSC Group 2 Age Limit

How to Check Your Age

For a maximum age of 32 as on 1 July 2026, a candidate in the Others category must not have completed 32 years on that date. In practice, if you were born on or after 2 July 1994, you are within the limit. For the minimum age of 18, you must have been born on or before 1 July 2008. Use the date of birth on your SSLC certificate, since that is the record TNPSC accepts.

Age Relaxation and Concessions

TNPSC does not follow the usual "plus three or plus five years" model. For candidates from Tamil Nadu's reserved communities, there is no maximum age limit at all.

Category

Upper Age Limit

Others (general)

32 years for most posts

SC, SC (Arunthathiyars), ST

No maximum age limit

MBC / Denotified Communities

No maximum age limit

BC (other than Muslim) and BC (Muslim)

No maximum age limit

Destitute Widows (all categories)

No maximum age limit

Persons with Benchmark Disability (Others)

Up to 42 years

Ex-servicemen (Others)

Up to 50 years

  • What "no maximum age limit" means: The candidate must not have completed 60 years as on 1 July 2026 or on the date of appointment, which is the retirement age for Tamil Nadu government service.

  • Ex-servicemen: The concession is not available to ex-servicemen who have already been recruited to any class, service or category under the government.

  • Persons with benchmark disability: Reserved-community candidates with a benchmark disability already have no maximum age limit. Some posts may have separate suitability conditions, so check the post table.

Figures such as the ex-servicemen limit have changed across notifications, and older pages may still show a different number. Follow the current notification.

Tamil Language Requirement

All candidates must clear Mains Paper I, the Tamil Eligibility Test, with at least 40 out of 100. It is a descriptive paper of SSLC standard covering translation, precis writing, comprehension, expansion of hints, an essay on Thirukkural themes and official letter writing. If you do not clear it, your Paper II is not evaluated, and you cannot be selected.

This is effectively an eligibility condition, not just an exam paper. Candidates from other states and English-medium candidates should judge honestly whether they can write SSLC-level Tamil within three hours before investing in the full preparation. Persons with benchmark disability may claim exemption from this paper in the manner prescribed in the notification.

The prelims language part is different: you can choose General English or General Tamil there. The Tamil requirement applies at the Mains stage.

Post-Specific Conditions

Some posts carry conditions beyond age and qualification.

  • Religion condition: Posts such as Executive Officer Grade III, Audit Inspector and Assistant in the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department are open only to candidates who profess the Hindu religion.

  • Physical standards: Jailor posts require prescribed physical standards such as height and chest measurements, verified after selection.

  • Vision standards: Certain posts require a specified vision standard, and the medical certificate must meet it at the time of appointment.

  • Gender-specific posts: Posts such as Jailor (Men) and Jailor (Special Prison for Women) are filled separately, as mentioned in the post table.

Reservation and Community Certificates

Vacancies are filled under Tamil Nadu's communal reservation rules, with shares for SC, SC (Arunthathiyars), ST, MBC/DC, BC (other than Muslim) and BC (Muslim). There is also a preferential allocation for Persons Studied in Tamil Medium (PSTM), for which you must have studied the required levels of education in Tamil medium and produce the prescribed certificate.

To claim any reservation or age concession, you need a valid community certificate issued by the competent Tamil Nadu authority. Claims made in the application but not supported by documents at certificate verification are rejected, and the candidate is treated as Others, which can make them over-age.

Number of Attempts

There is no cap on attempts. You can appear in every cycle as long as you meet the age limit and other conditions for that notification. For reserved-community candidates, this effectively means attempts until the age of 60.

Since you can attempt repeatedly, each cycle is worth treating as a real attempt.

Who Is Not Eligible

Applications are commonly rejected for these reasons:

  • Over-age in the Others category: Candidates who cross 32 (or the post-specific limit) on 1 July 2026.

  • Long government service: Others-category candidates who have already completed five years or more in Central or State Government service are not eligible, even if they fall within the age limit.

  • Degree not held on the notification date: Results declared later do not count unless the notification allows it.

  • Wrong qualification for a specific post: Applying for a post that needs a B.L., B.Com or MCA without that degree.

  • Unsupported community claims: No valid certificate at verification means losing the concession.

  • Mismatch with One Time Registration: Name, date of birth or other details that do not match certificates.

Quick Self-Check Before You Apply

  1. Citizenship: Confirm you are a citizen of India.

  2. Degree: Confirm you held a recognised degree on the notification date, and the specific degree if your target post needs one.

  3. Age: Work out your age as on 1 July 2026 from your SSLC certificate and compare it with your post and community limit.

  4. Community status: Check that your community certificate is valid and issued by a Tamil Nadu authority.

  5. Tamil: Make sure you can prepare for a descriptive SSLC-standard Tamil paper, unless you are exempt.

  6. Service record: If you are in the Others category, confirm you have not completed five years in government service.
