TNPSC Group 2 Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims and Mains Guide
The TNPSC Group 2 exam pattern covers two written stages: a common Preliminary Examination for Group II and Group IIA posts, followed by separate Main Examinations for each stream. The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission runs this recruitment as the Combined Civil Services Examination-II (CCSE-II). For the current cycle, Notification No. 07/2026 was issued on 11 August 2026, and the preliminary exam is scheduled for 1 November 2026.
This page explains the marks, questions, timing and qualifying rules for every paper, how the final rank is decided, and what the pattern means for your preparation. The most important points to know: there is no interview for either stream under the current scheme, the prelims only screens candidates, and your rank depends on Mains Paper II alone.
Table of Contents

Key Changes to Know
Many students still prepare from older summaries of this exam. These are the points where the current scheme differs from what you may read elsewhere.
No interview stage: Earlier cycles had "interview posts" under Group II. The current notification has no oral test for any post, so the Mains decides selection.
Group IIA Mains is now objective: Group IIA candidates write a 200-question Computer Based Test for Paper II, not a descriptive paper.
Tamil Eligibility Test is a hard gate: Paper II is evaluated only if you score at least 40 out of 100 in Paper I.
Prelims marks are not carried forward: They are used only to shortlist candidates for the Mains.
Older pages may still show an interview or a descriptive Group IIA Mains, so always follow the scheme printed in the notification you apply under.
TNPSC Group 2 Prelims Exam Pattern
The Preliminary Examination is common to Group II and Group IIA. It is an offline, OMR-based objective test held across Tamil Nadu. For the 2026 cycle, it runs from 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM on 1 November 2026.
Part | Subject | Standard | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
A | General Studies | Degree | 75 | 300 (for the whole paper) | 3 hours (for the whole paper) |
B | Aptitude and Mental Ability | SSLC | 25 | Included above | Included above |
C | General Tamil or General English | SSLC | 100 | Included above | Included above |
Total | 3 parts | Mixed | 200 | 300 | 3 hours |
The minimum qualifying mark is 90 out of 300 for all communities. Clearing 90 does not guarantee a Mains seat, because candidates are shortlisted in order of marks, community-wise, against the number of vacancies (in recent cycles, roughly ten candidates per vacancy).
Unit-wise Question Split in General Studies
The 75 General Studies questions are spread across six units. Tamil Nadu-focused units carry the most weight.
Unit | Topic | Questions |
|---|---|---|
I | General Science | 5 |
II | Geography of India | 5 |
III | History, Culture of India and Indian National Movement | 10 |
IV | Indian Polity | 15 |
V | Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu | 20 |
VI | History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu | 20 |
Total | Six units | 75 |
The Aptitude and Mental Ability part has 15 aptitude questions (simplification, percentage, HCF and LCM, ratio, interest, area, volume, time and work) and 10 reasoning questions (puzzles, dice, visual reasoning, alphanumeric reasoning, number series).
Language Part: General Tamil or General English
The language part is half the paper. You pick one language at the application stage. The General English syllabus distributes its 100 questions as shown below, and General Tamil follows the same seven units with a slightly different split between some of them.
Unit | Area | Questions (General English) |
|---|---|---|
I | Grammar | 25 |
II | Vocabulary | 15 |
III | Writing Skills | 10 |
IV | Technical Terms | 10 |
V | Reading Comprehension | 20 |
VI | Translation | 5 |
VII | Literary Works | 15 |
Unit VII in both languages is built on a defined list of texts. For General Tamil, this includes selected Thirukkural chapters, ethical works and named Tamil scholars, so the scope is finite and can be fully prepared.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
The prelims carries 300 marks for 200 questions, which works out to 1.5 marks per question. The same ratio applies to the objective Group IIA Mains Paper II.
No negative marking: A wrong answer does not reduce your score in the prelims or the objective Mains.
Option [E] on the OMR sheet: TNPSC answer sheets carry a fifth option, [E], for questions you choose not to answer. The instructions also warn that leaving a question completely unshaded can lead to a deduction, so read the rules on your hall ticket carefully.
Qualifying, not scoring: Prelims marks decide whether you reach the Mains. They are not added to the final total.
TNPSC Group 2 Mains Exam Pattern
Candidates shortlisted from the prelims sit a Main Examination with two papers. Paper I is common to both streams. Paper II is different for Group II and Group IIA.
Paper I: Tamil Eligibility Test (Common)
Particular | Details |
|---|---|
Type | Descriptive, SSLC standard |
Maximum marks | 100 |
Duration | 3 hours |
Minimum qualifying marks | 40 |
Counted in rank? | No |
Sections | Translation (Tamil to English and English to Tamil), precis writing, comprehension, expanding a brief note, essay on Thirukkural themes, official letter writing, Tamil language knowledge |
Your Paper II answer script is evaluated only if you clear Paper I. English-medium candidates should start writing practice for this paper early, because it tests composition skills, not recall.
Paper II for Group II Services (Descriptive)
Group II Paper II is a degree-standard General Studies paper of 300 marks and 3 hours, with a minimum qualifying mark of 90. It is spread across seven units.
Unit | Topic | Marks |

The other units are Modern History of Tamil Nadu with Tamil Society (30), Science and Technology in Development (20), Tamil Nadu Economy and Social Issues (30), and Geography of Tamil Nadu with Environment and Disaster Management (25).
Group II vs Group IIA: How the Mains Differ
Both streams share the same prelims and the same Tamil Eligibility Test. The real difference lies in Paper II and the skill it rewards.
Aspect | Group II Services | Group IIA Services |
|---|---|---|
Paper II format | Descriptive, 24 written answers | Objective CBT, 200 questions |
Core skill tested | Structured answer writing at speed | Accuracy and speed on MCQs |
Heaviest area | Polity and Governance (60 marks) | Administration of States (45 questions) |
Reasoning | Not tested in Paper II | 50 questions |
Interview | None | None |
Since one application covers posts in both streams, you do not need to choose early. Prepare the common General Studies base first, then specialise once you know which Mains you are writing.
How the Final Merit List Is Prepared
Final selection follows a simple rule: only Paper II marks count, provided you have cleared every qualifying hurdle.
Prelims: Score at least 90 and rank high enough in your community to be shortlisted.
Paper I: Score at least 40 out of 100 so that Paper II is evaluated.
Paper II: Score at least 90 out of 300. Your rank is based on this score.
Certificate verification and counselling: Candidates are called in order of rank and choose posts based on rank and reservation.
Worked example: Suppose a Group IIA candidate scores 182 in the prelims, 58 in the Tamil Eligibility Test and 204 in Paper II. The prelims and Paper I scores only confirm eligibility. Her rank is decided by 204 alone. A candidate with a higher prelims score but 196 in Paper II will rank below her.
What the Exam Pattern Means for Your Preparation
Bank the language part: 100 of the 200 prelims questions are SSLC-standard language questions with a defined syllabus. High accuracy here is the most reliable way to clear the shortlist.
Weight General Studies by unit size: Units IV, V and VI together give 55 of the 75 GS questions in the prelims, and the same Tamil Nadu themes dominate both Mains papers.
Do not postpone the Tamil Eligibility Test: It is descriptive, timed and decides whether your Paper II is even checked.
Train the right skill for Paper II: Group II needs regular answer writing. Group IIA needs timed objective practice, especially in administration topics and reasoning.
Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy
Prelims (200 questions in 180 minutes)
You get about 54 seconds per question on average. A practical split is shown below; adjust it after a few full-length mocks.
Part | Questions | Suggested Time |
|---|---|---|
General Tamil or General English | 100 | 65 to 70 minutes |
General Studies | 75 | 70 to 75 minutes |
Aptitude and Mental Ability | 25 | 25 minutes |
OMR check and option [E] review | All | 10 minutes |
Group II Mains Paper II (24 answers in 180 minutes)
Part A: About 4 minutes per answer, roughly 36 minutes for nine answers.
Part B: About 4 minutes per answer, roughly 12 minutes for three answers.
Part C: About 10 minutes per answer, roughly 120 minutes for twelve answers, leaving a short buffer for review.
Group IIA Mains Paper II (200 questions in 180 minutes)
Start with the 50 reasoning questions only if they are your strength, since they can be faster to solve. Otherwise, move through General Studies first, mark doubtful questions, and keep the last 10 to 15 minutes for review on the CBT screen.
The scheme on this page follows Notification No. 07/2026. Check the detailed scheme of examination and syllabus on the official TNPSC website before your exam.
