UPPCS Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains and Interview

The UPPCS exam pattern has three stages: an objective Preliminary Examination, a conventional Main Examination and an interview. UPPCS is the Combined State / Upper Subordinate Services Examination conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC), and this page follows advertisement A-1/E-1/2026.

Knowing the pattern before you plan matters because the stages reward different skills. Prelims is a test of accurate recall and quick decisions, while Mains tests written answers across eight papers. Only Paper I of the Prelims counts for merit, and there is no optional subject in the Mains.

Use this page to see marks, timing, qualifying rules and the cost of a wrong guess, then match your study time to where the marks are. The pattern details come from the commission's notification. Items that we could not confirm in the notice text are marked.

Both papers are compulsory, and a candidate who skips either paper is disqualified. The commission decides merit only from Paper I. Paper II is a qualifying paper with minimum marks fixed at 33 percent, which is 66 out of 200.

Based on the result, about fifteen times the number of vacancies are declared successful for the Main Examination. With about 500 vacancies in this cycle, that points to a Mains list in the range of 7,500 candidates, but the final count depends on the vacancy figure and the commission's decision.

All Mains papers are conventional, and three hours are allowed for each. General Hindi and Essay carry 150 marks each, and the six General Studies papers carry 200 each. Paper numbering differs between third-party tables, so use the paper names above and confirm numbering in the notification. The essay format of three essays of about 700 words is as commonly reported, so check it in the notice.

Interview

Candidates who clear the Main Examination are called for the interview, which carries 100 marks. About three times the number of vacancies are called. Appearing for the interview is essential for every candidate who qualifies on the Mains, and the final result adds interview marks to the Main (written) marks.

Marking scheme and qualifying rules

  • Minimum qualifying marks: The notice sets 35 percent for SC/ST candidates and 40 percent for other categories in the Preliminary and Main examinations. Candidates below these marks are not placed in the merit list.

  • Prelims Paper I: 200 marks for 150 questions works out to about 1.33 marks per question, so 40 percent is 80 marks and 35 percent is 70 marks.

  • Prelims Paper II: 200 marks for 100 questions is 2 marks per question. Qualifying marks are 66 out of 200.

  • Negative marking (tentative): Prelims is reported to deduct one-third of the marks of a question for a wrong answer, and unattempted questions carry no penalty. We could not confirm this clause in the notice text, so check the notification before the exam.

  • Mains qualifying floor: 40 percent of 1,500 is 600 marks and 35 percent is 525 marks, calculated from the percentage rule.

Older pages may still show an earlier pattern with optional papers, so follow the official notification.

What the pattern means for you

  • Paper I decides your Prelims: CSAT needs only 66 marks, so keep a steady but small share of your time for it and spend the rest on General Studies.

  • Guessing has a price: If the one-third penalty applies, a wrong answer costs about 0.44 marks in Paper I. Attempt questions where you can remove at least two options.

  • Mains is a writing exam: Eight papers of three hours each need daily answer practice, so start writing well before Prelims results.

  • State papers are scoring areas: Two of the six General Studies papers focus on Uttar Pradesh, so state facts earn 400 of the 1,500 Mains marks.

  • Do not ignore Hindi and Essay: Together they carry 300 marks and reward practice more than reading.

Final merit calculation

Final merit is the total of Mains (written) marks and interview marks. Prelims marks are not added. The maximum is 1,500 plus 100, which is 1,600 marks.

Main Examination

1,500

Interview

100

Final total

1,600

The example scores are made up to show the arithmetic and are not a benchmark. Because the interview is 100 marks, a gain of 10 marks there equals the effect of 10 marks in Mains.

Time management

  1. Prelims Paper I: Plan about 48 seconds per question, then mark doubtful questions and return after one full pass.

  2. Prelims Paper II: Attempt comprehension and reasoning first, and leave long calculations for the end.

  3. Mains papers: Read all questions, allot time per mark and keep the last 10 minutes for a quick check.

  4. Practice: Take timed papers in the exam slot you will get, and review every error the same day.
