UPPSC PCS Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains and Interview

The UPPSC PCS exam pattern has three stages: an objective preliminary exam, a descriptive main exam and an interview. The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission uses it for the Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Examination, and the 2026 prelims is scheduled for 6 December 2026.

Knowing the pattern well changes how you spend your time. Prelims only screens you, so it never adds to your final score. Mains and the interview decide your rank and your post. The main change in recent cycles is that mains no longer has optional subjects. Two Uttar Pradesh papers, GS V and GS VI, have taken their place. This page explains each stage, the marking rules, and what they mean for your preparation.

  • General Hindi minimum: You must obtain the minimum marks the Commission prescribes in General Hindi. Check the exact figure in the notification for your cycle.

  • Essay structure: Three essays, one from each of three sections, about 700 words each.

  • Answer language: Apart from General Hindi, candidates can generally write in Hindi or English, but the notification sets the exact rules, so confirm them before mains.

  • Mains is held over several days: In the 2025 cycle, mains began on 29 March 2026 and ran over four days.

Older pages may still show six compulsory papers plus two optional papers, so follow the official notification.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

Prelims has negative marking in both papers. For each wrong answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. Questions you leave blank carry no penalty. Marking more than one option counts as a wrong answer.

Mains papers are descriptive and have no negative marking. The quality, structure and relevance of your answers decide your score.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Marks per question in Paper I: 200 marks over 150 questions is about 1.33 marks each. A wrong answer costs about 0.44 marks.

  • Marks per question in CSAT: 200 marks over 100 questions is 2 marks each, and a wrong answer costs about 0.67 marks.

  • The cost of guessing: A blind guess among four options loses marks on average. Guess only when you can eliminate at least two options.

  • Where your effort goes: Mains is worth 1,500 of the 1,600 final marks, and 400 of those are UP-specific. Build answer writing and UP content early.

Interview (Personality Test)

The interview carries 100 marks and is held at the UPPSC office in Prayagraj. The board tests your awareness, judgement, communication and suitability for public service. Questions often draw on your detailed application form, home district, education, hobbies and the posts in your preference list. The number of candidates called is a small multiple of the vacancies. In the 2025 cycle, 2,297 candidates were shortlisted for interview.

Final Merit Calculation

Final merit adds your mains total (out of 1,500) and your interview marks (out of 100), for a total out of 1,600. Prelims marks are not added. Posts are then allocated by rank, category and your post preferences.

Worked example: A candidate scores 820 in mains and 70 in the interview. The final score is 890 out of 1,600. Another candidate with 840 in mains and 45 in the interview ends at 885, so the first candidate ranks higher despite the lower mains score. The interview can shift ranks, so prepare for it seriously.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

  • Paper I in rounds: Answer the sure questions in a first pass of about 60 to 70 minutes, then return to the ones you can narrow down.

  • Secure CSAT first: Start with comprehension and familiar question types until you have a safe margin above 66 marks.

  • Mains pacing: Divide your three hours by the marks of each question and stop when the time for that question is up.

  • OMR care: Mark answers as you go in sections so you do not run out of time at the end.

Confirm the scheme for your cycle in the official notification on the UPPSC website.
