CDS Study Notes 2026: Subject-wise Notes and Revision Plan

Build short, revision-ready CDS notes for English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics, and use them alongside mock tests.

CDS study notes are short, personal summaries of the UPSC Combined Defence Services syllabus that you can revise in minutes instead of rereading full books. The GK paper alone spans history, geography, polity, economy, science and current affairs, so without notes, most of what you read in month one is gone by exam week.

This page covers what to include for each paper, how to organise your notes and how to revise them before the CDS exam.

Table of Contents

What to Include in CDS Notes

Paper

What to note

Format

English

New words with usage, idioms and phrases, grammar rules you keep getting wrong

Vocabulary notebook, rule list with one example each

General Knowledge

Static facts, polity articles, science concepts, monthly current affairs, defence news

One-page topic summaries, monthly current affairs sheet

Elementary Mathematics

Formulas, standard trigonometric values, mensuration results, shortcuts

Formula sheet, solved examples of tricky question types

OTA aspirants can skip Maths notes and give that time to English and GK. Follow the CDS syllabus so your notes cover what UPSC actually tests.

How to Organise Your Notes

  • Keep them short: Write keywords, dates and formulas, not paragraphs. One topic should fit on one or two pages.

  • Separate the defence list: Note military exercises, appointments, awards and new equipment apart from general current affairs, as these appear regularly in GK.

  • Maintain an error log: After every mock test, write each mistake, the correct answer and why you missed it.

  • Choose one format: Handwritten or digital both work. Mixing the two makes revision harder.

Revision Schedule

  1. Daily: Ten minutes on the notes you made that day and your vocabulary list.

  2. Weekly: Revise all notes from the week and your error log.

  3. Monthly: Compress the month's current affairs into a single sheet.

  4. Final four weeks: Revise only from your notes, formula sheet and error log, alongside full-length mocks.
