Union Public Service Commission EPFO

UPSC EPFO is a recruitment exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission, relevant to aspirants preparing for UPSC-administered civil and central services.

UPSC EPFO is the recruitment route through which the Union Public Service Commission fills officer posts in the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), the body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment that runs India's provident fund, pension and insurance schemes for organised-sector workers. The UPSC EPFO 2026 cycle is for the post of Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC), a Group A role, with 80 vacancies notified under Special Advertisement No. 52/2026.

Registration for this cycle has closed, and the Recruitment Test (RT) is scheduled for 20 December 2026. This page brings together everything you need in one place: verified dates, vacancies, eligibility, fee, selection process, exam pattern, a syllabus summary, salary, previous cut-offs and a preparation plan. It also explains why there is no Enforcement Officer/Accounts Officer (EO/AO) recruitment in this cycle, a point many older pages still get wrong.

UPSC EPFO Notification 2026: Latest Updates

The 2026 cycle moved in three steps. UPSC first issued a short notice on 19 August 2026, then released the detailed advertisement, and opened online registration on 22 August 2026. Here is what changed compared with earlier cycles:

  • APFC only: The 2026 advertisement covers only the 80 APFC posts. In the 2023 cycle, UPSC had recruited both EO/AO and APFC through a common Recruitment Test.

  • EO/AO posts withdrawn: According to an RTI reply reported in June 2026, EPFO withdrew its requisition for 311 EO/AO posts, reportedly to fill them through departmental promotion. No EO/AO advertisement has been issued for this cycle, so any page offering "EO/AO 2026" application details is outdated.

  • Registration window extended: The last date, originally 11 September 2026, was reported extended to 14 September 2026 (6:00 PM). The window has now closed.

  • Syllabus wording updated: The topic "Industrial Relations and Labour Laws" now reads "Industrial Relations, Labour Codes and Social Security in India", reflecting the four labour codes that replaced most older labour laws.

UPSC EPFO Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for the APFC post is simpler than for most Group A exams, but the age rules need care.

Nationality

Candidates must be Indian citizens, or fall in the other categories UPSC allows for central posts, such as subjects of Nepal or Bhutan and certain persons of Indian origin, subject to a certificate of eligibility.

Educational Qualification

  • Essential: A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university or equivalent.

  • Desirable: A diploma in Company Law, Labour Laws or Public Administration. This is not mandatory, so graduates without it can apply.

Age Limit and Relaxation

Application Fee and How to Apply

SC / ST / PwBD / Women (all categories)

Some pages still show a fee of Rs. 200. That figure does not apply to this recruitment; UPSC's fee for the APFC post is Rs. 25.

The application process ran on the UPSC Online Recruitment Application (ORA) portal and followed these steps:

  1. Register on the ORA portal and complete the one-time Common Application Form.

  2. Select the APFC post under Special Advertisement No. 52/2026.

  3. Fill in personal, educational and category details.

  4. Upload the photograph, signature and supporting documents as specified.

  5. Pay the fee online, if applicable, and choose a test centre.

  6. Submit the form and save a copy for your records.

Keep your registration ID and the documents you uploaded ready. You will need the same certificates at the interview stage, and any mismatch can lead to rejection.

UPSC EPFO Selection Process

  1. Recruitment Test (RT): An objective, pen-and-paper test that carries 75% weightage in the final merit.

  2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates face a 100-mark interview carrying 25% weightage.

  3. Final merit: Prepared on the combined RT and interview scores in the 75:25 ratio, followed by document verification.

The interview also has minimum qualifying marks. Falling below them ends your candidature, however strong your RT score.

UPSC EPFO Exam Pattern

The Recruitment Test is a single objective paper. UPSC states the duration, format and negative marking in the advertisement; the number of questions and total marks come from recent papers.

Feature

Details

Mode

Offline (OMR-based), objective multiple choice

Duration

2 hours

Questions and marks

120 questions for 300 marks in recent papers (2.5 marks each)

Negative marking

One-third of the marks for that question per wrong answer

Medium

English and Hindi

Weightage in final merit

75%

What this means for you:

  • One minute per question: 120 questions in 120 minutes leaves almost no buffer, so speed in reasoning and English matters as much as knowledge.

  • Wrong guesses are costly: Each wrong answer costs about 0.83 marks, so three wrong guesses wipe out one correct answer.

  • No sectional cut-off: Strong areas can carry weaker ones, which rewards depth in labour codes, social security and accounting.

In-hand salary depends on the posting city, DA rate and deductions, so it varies. This is not an official figure, but it is useful to know that HRA alone differs noticeably between metro and smaller-city postings.

Job role: An APFC supervises provident fund compliance in a region or zone. Typical work includes inspecting establishments, ensuring employers deposit contributions, conducting inquiries to assess dues, settling claims and handling grievances under the EPF and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

Career growth: With experience and departmental promotion, an APFC can move to Regional Provident Fund Commissioner Grade II and Grade I, and further to senior positions such as Additional Central Provident Fund Commissioner.

UPSC EPFO Previous Year Cut-off

The last APFC recruitment test was held in 2023. The figures below, as reported from that cycle, show the RT cut-off out of 300 and the final cut-off on the combined 75:25 scale.

Category

RT cut-off 2023 (out of 300)

Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. With only 80 posts in 2026, competition may be tighter than in 2023, so treat these figures as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above them.

How to Prepare for UPSC EPFO APFC

With the RT set for 20 December, most candidates have about two months left. A focused plan works better than trying to cover everything equally.

  1. Weeks 1 to 3, core subjects: Finish labour codes, social security schemes and industrial relations first. These are EPFO-specific, and general-studies candidates rarely cover them well, which makes them your scoring edge.

  2. Weeks 2 to 5, accounting and maths: Revise accounting principles, auditing basics and insurance concepts alongside daily practice in arithmetic, statistics and reasoning.

  3. Throughout, general studies and current affairs: Cover polity, economy, history and science from standard sources, and spend 30 to 40 minutes a day on current events, especially labour and social security news.

  4. Final four weeks, full-length tests: Attempt at least two timed mocks a week, analyse each one the same day, and keep an error log of concepts you got wrong.

Solving previous year papers shows you how UPSC frames labour-law and accounting questions, which is often more analytical than expected. For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt UPSC EPFO mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to decide where your remaining hours should go. Compact EPFO study notes for labour codes and schemes also make final-week revision faster.

Because the general studies portion overlaps heavily with civil services preparation, candidates also preparing for the UPSC Civil Services exam can reuse much of that work and spend the extra time on EPFO-specific subjects.

Admit Card, Answer Key and Result

  • e-Admit card: UPSC releases it on upsconline.nic.in shortly before the test. Download it using your registration ID or roll number and date of birth, and check your name, photo and centre details.

  • Answer key: UPSC usually publishes the official answer key only after the entire recruitment process ends, so rely on your own response record for early estimates.

  • Result: The RT result lists roll numbers of candidates shortlisted for interview. The final result, with marks and cut-offs, follows the interviews.

For official notices, always check the UPSC website and the UPSC online application portal. To understand the organisation you are applying to, the EPFO official website explains its schemes and structure.
