National Cancer Awareness Day 2026

Key points
Why in the News?
India observes National Cancer Awareness Day on 7 November every year to spread awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, timely diagnosis and treatment.
The observance aims to educate people about cancer risk factors, encourage appropriate screening and improve access to healthcare services.
The date also marks the birth anniversary of Marie Curie, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist whose pioneering research on radioactivity contributed to the development of cancer treatment techniques.
History of National Cancer Awareness Day
National Cancer Awareness Day was announced in September 2014 by the then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
The Government of India decided to observe the day annually on 7 November to encourage awareness about cancer and highlight the importance of early diagnosis.
The date was selected to commemorate the birth anniversary of Marie Curie, who was born on 7 November 1867 in Warsaw, Poland.
Marie Curie and her husband Pierre Curie discovered the radioactive elements polonium and radium in 1898.
Her scientific contributions helped lay the foundations for the medical use of radiation, including radiotherapy for cancer treatment.
Objectives and Significance
National Cancer Awareness Day focuses on educating people about preventable cancer risk factors and the importance of recognising potential warning signs.
The observance encourages individuals to avoid tobacco, maintain healthy lifestyles and seek medical advice when they notice persistent or unexplained symptoms.
It also highlights the importance of access to screening, diagnosis and treatment, particularly for underserved communities.
Early detection can improve treatment outcomes for several types of cancer, although screening recommendations vary according to age, individual risk and cancer type.
Cancer Prevention and Risk Factors
Cancer is a group of diseases characterised by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells.
Important risk factors include tobacco consumption, alcohol use, unhealthy diets, obesity, physical inactivity, certain infections and exposure to environmental carcinogens.
Some cancers are also associated with inherited genetic factors.
Cancer prevention strategies include avoiding tobacco, reducing alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy body weight, staying physically active and receiving recommended vaccinations.
Vaccination against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) can help prevent cervical cancer and several other HPV-related cancers, while hepatitis B vaccination reduces the risk of hepatitis B-related liver cancer.
Government Initiatives for Cancer Prevention and Treatment
National Cancer Control Programme
India launched the National Cancer Control Programme in 1975 to strengthen cancer treatment facilities.
The programme subsequently placed greater emphasis on prevention, early detection and improving cancer care services.
National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases
The Government of India implements the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD).
It focuses on preventing and managing major non-communicable diseases, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
The programme supports awareness activities, early diagnosis, screening and referral services.
Ayushman Bharat
Under Ayushman Bharat, primary healthcare facilities support screening and management of common non-communicable diseases.
Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY also provides eligible beneficiaries access to specified hospital treatment packages, including cancer-related treatments, subject to scheme provisions.
