What is Allahabad High Court RO?
Allahabad High Court RO is the recruitment examination for the post of Review Officer in the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, the High Court of Uttar Pradesh. It is a state-level recruitment run by the High Court itself, while the National Testing Agency (NTA) handles the online application and candidate notices. The Review Officer is one of the senior ministerial (office-side) posts in the High Court establishment and sits in Pay Level-8, one level above Assistant Review Officer.
The exam does not follow a fixed yearly calendar. The High Court notifies it when posts need to be filled, and the previous cycle was the 2021 recruitment. It is taken mainly by graduates aged 21 to 35 who hold a computer qualification and can type in English. Candidates from any state can apply, though reservation benefits apply only to Uttar Pradesh domiciles. Selection has three stages: an objective test, a subjective Main Examination and a computer typing test, with no interview.

RO vs ARO vs Computer Assistant: Post-Wise Comparison
Many students search for "RO ARO" as if it were one post. It is not. Review Officer, Assistant Review Officer and Computer Assistant are separate posts with separate vacancies and pay levels, but the High Court has notified them together and will select for all three through a single recruitment examination. Testkart has a separate page for the ARO post; this page focuses on the Review Officer.
Point | Review Officer (RO) | Assistant Review Officer (ARO) | Computer Assistant |
|---|---|---|---|
Vacancies (2026) | 138 | 380 | 25 |
Qualification | Graduation, computer qualification (CCC, O Level, or diploma/degree in computer science) and 25 wpm English typing | Same as RO | Same as RO |
Age limit (as on 01 July 2026) | 21 to 35 years | 21 to 35 years | 18 to 35 years |
Pay level | Level-8 (Rs. 47,600 to Rs. 1,51,100) | Level-7 (Rs. 44,900 to Rs. 1,42,400) | Level-4 (Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 81,100) |
Selection stages | Stage-I objective test, Stage-II Main Examination, Stage-III Computer Knowledge Test | Same three stages | Same three stages |
Application | One application and one fee cover all three posts | Same | Same |
Final merit list | Separate RO list | Separate ARO list; RO selectees are not considered | Separate list; RO and ARO selectees are not considered |
Final results are prepared separately for each post in order of merit. A candidate selected as Review Officer is not considered for ARO or Computer Assistant, and an ARO selectee is not considered for Computer Assistant. Because RO carries the highest pay level and fewer seats than ARO, it effectively needs a higher rank in the common merit.

Allahabad High Court RO Exam Pattern 2026
The 2026 scheme has three stages. In the 2021 cycle, the exam had only a computer-based objective paper followed by a typing test on the same day. Older pages may still show that format, so follow the 2026 notification.
Stage-I: Objective Test
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
General Studies (OMR, MCQ) | 200 | 200 | 180 minutes |
There is no negative marking and no minimum qualifying mark. The paper is in English and Hindi; the English version prevails in case of any difference. Candidates equal to seven times the vacancies in each category are shortlisted for the next stage.
Stage-II: Main Examination (Subjective)
Section | Marks |
|---|---|
A: Essay in English (about 200 words) | 30 |
B: Precis writing in English | 30 |
C (i): Translation, English to Hindi | 25 |
C (ii): Translation, Hindi to English | 25 |
D: Comprehension in English | 40 |
Total (120 minutes) | 150 |
Stage-III: Computer Knowledge Test
Test | Task | Marks | Time | Qualifying marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Computer Knowledge Test (computer-based) | Reproduce an English passage of about 500 words in the same format | 50 | 20 minutes | 25 |
Each mistake costs 0.1 mark, and left-out words and spelling errors count as full mistakes. Stage-II and Stage-III are held on the same day at the same venue, with a 20-minute gap.
What this means for you:
Stage-I is a filter: Its marks decide only who reaches Stage-II. With no negative marking, attempt every question.
Writing decides selection: Stage-II carries three times the weight of Stage-III in the final merit, so English writing and translation deserve daily practice.
Typing is a gate and a scorer: You need 25 out of 50 to qualify, and every error lowers your merit.

Syllabus Summary
The notification names the subject areas for Stage-I but does not publish sub-topics or subject-wise question counts. Use the list below as a working checklist built from the official headings.
Subject area | Stage | Important topics |
|---|---|---|
General Science | Stage-I | Physics, chemistry and biology basics, everyday science |
History and National Movement | Stage-I | Ancient, medieval and modern India, freedom struggle |

Agriculture, Commerce, Population, Ecology | Stage-I | Crops, trade, census, environment, urbanisation |
World and Indian Geography | Stage-I | Physical geography, resources of India |
Current Events, General Aptitude | Stage-I | National and international events, reasoning |

Essay, precis, translation, comprehension | Stage-II | Writing in English, Hindi-English translation |

The topic-wise breakdown is on the Allahabad High Court RO syllabus page.
Selection Process and Final Merit
Stage | Marks | Minimum qualifying marks | Counted in final merit? |
|---|---|---|---|
Stage-I: Objective test | 200 | None (shortlisting at seven times the vacancies in each category) | No, shortlisting only |
Stage-II: Subjective Main Examination | 150 | 50 | Yes |
Stage-III: Computer Knowledge Test | 50 | 25 | Yes |
Final merit | 200 (Stage-II plus Stage-III) | Qualify all three stages | No interview |
Tie-break: The older candidate ranks higher; if still tied, higher Stage-II marks, then higher Stage-I marks.
Every stage must be cleared separately, with no exemption for any category. The merit list stays valid for one year or until the next selection, whichever is earlier. Selected candidates then go through document verification and a medical fitness check.
Salary and Career Growth
Post | Pay level (7th Pay Commission matrix) | Pay scale | Starting basic pay | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Review Officer | Level-8 | Rs. 47,600 to Rs. 1,51,100 | Rs. 47,600 | Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances as per rules |
Assistant Review Officer | Level-7 | Rs. 44,900 to Rs. 1,42,400 | Rs. 44,900 | Allowances as per rules |
Computer Assistant | Level-4 | Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 81,100 | Rs. 25,500 | Allowances as per rules |
The pay level and range are official. The notification does not state an in-hand figure, which depends on the current dearness allowance rate, city and deductions, so treat any in-hand number you see online as an estimate. Because RO carries the highest pay level of the three posts in the same exam, it is also the most competitive choice.
How to Prepare for the Allahabad High Court RO Exam
Since there is no exam date yet, use the time to build skills for all three stages together rather than one at a time. Stage-II and Stage-III come soon after Stage-I, and writing and typing cannot be crammed in a few weeks.
Stage-I Preparation
Cover the static core first: History, polity, geography and science together cover most of the listed areas.
Do not skip UP knowledge: UP culture, agriculture and industry form a separate syllabus heading.
Build a current affairs habit: Spend 30 to 40 minutes a day and make monthly notes.
Practise the OMR format: 200 questions in 180 minutes means under a minute per question, plus time to fill bubbles.
Stage-II Preparation
Write one short essay a week: Keep it near 200 words with a clear structure.
Practise precis and comprehension: Use editorials to practise cutting passages to one-third length.
Translate both ways daily: Ten lines from English to Hindi and ten from Hindi to English.
Stage-III Preparation
Type every day: Aim well above 25 wpm so you have a margin under exam pressure.
Focus on accuracy: Each error costs 0.1 mark, so slow, clean typing beats fast, careless typing.
Mock Tests and Practice
The High Court and NTA have not published an official mock test for this exam, and Stage-I is a pen-and-paper OMR test, so timed full-length practice on your own matters. Watch the High Court's official website for any practice material or notices: https://www.allahabadhighcourt.in/.
Cut-off Reference
No cut-off has been released for the 2026 cycle. The only fixed thresholds are the minimum qualifying marks in Stage-II and Stage-III, and the 2021 cut-offs come from an exam with a different structure, so they cannot be compared directly with the 2026 scheme.
Year/cycle | Post | Category | Cut-off marks | Out of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
2026 | Review Officer | All categories | Stage-I: no minimum mark; shortlisting at seven times the vacancies in each category | 200 |
2026 | Review Officer | All categories | Stage-II minimum qualifying mark: 50 | 150 |
2026 | Review Officer | All categories | Stage-III minimum qualifying mark: 25 | 50 |
2026 | Review Officer | Category-wise | Final merit cut-off: to be declared after the final result | 200 |
2021 | Review Officer | Category-wise | Marks of the last selected candidate, declared through the notice dated 06 February 2024 (different exam structure, not comparable) | 2021 scheme (different total) |
2021 cut-off notice: https://allahabadhighcourt.in/event/event_17595_06-02-2024.pdf
Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. For context, 90,597 candidates registered and 45,770 appeared for the 2021 RO exam. Treat any figure as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above it. Read more on the Allahabad High Court RO cut-off page.
