Bank of India PO Exam Pattern 2026: Stages, Marks and Time
The Bank of India PO exam pattern is the IBPS PO pattern, because Bank of India recruits Probationary Officers through the IBPS Common Recruitment Process (CRP PO/MT-XVI in the 2026 cycle). There are four stages: a qualifying Prelims, a Mains with an objective and a descriptive paper, a Personality Test, and an interview.
This cycle changed the Mains. The objective paper grew to 170 questions, the awareness section became larger, the descriptive paper changed, and a Personality Test was added. This page explains each stage, the marking scheme and what the numbers mean for your time use. The figures come from summaries of the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification, so cross-check them on the official site.

Bank of India PO Prelims pattern
Prelims is a screening round. You must clear both the sectional cut-offs and the overall cut-off set by IBPS to reach Mains, and the marks are not added to your final score.
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
English Language | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 30 | 20 minutes |
Reasoning Ability | 35 | 40 | 20 minutes |
Total | 100 | 100 | 60 minutes |
Each section has its own timer, so you cannot carry spare minutes from one test to the next. The 2026 Prelims pattern was the same as in the previous year, and the marks per section in the table above are as reported in notification summaries.
Bank of India PO Mains pattern
Objective tests
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 40 | 60 | 45 minutes |
General, Economy, Banking and Digital and Financial Awareness | 50 | 60 | 35 minutes |
English Language | 40 | 20 | 35 minutes |
Data Analysis and Interpretation | 40 | 60 | 45 minutes |
Objective total | 170 | 200 | 160 minutes |
Descriptive test
The descriptive test has two tasks, an essay and a comprehension-based question, for 25 marks in 30 minutes. Together with the objective tests, the Mains is worth 225 marks.
Sources differ on how the first Mains section is named. Some call it Reasoning, and some call it Reasoning and Computer Aptitude. The question and mark counts are the same in the summaries we checked, but read the section name in the official notification.
Marking scheme and negative marking
Wrong answers: One-fourth of the marks assigned to the question is deducted for each wrong answer in the objective tests of Prelims and Mains.
Unattempted questions: There is no penalty for leaving a question blank.
Sectional timing: Each test has its own time limit, so plan your time test by test.
Older pages may still show the earlier Mains with 145 questions and a Letter and Essay paper, so follow the current notification on the IBPS website.
What the Bank of India PO pattern means for you
Mains test | Marks per question | Approx. time per question | Cost of a wrong answer |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning | 1.5 | About 1.1 minutes | 0.375 marks |
General, Economy, Banking and Digital and Financial Awareness | 1.2 | About 0.7 minutes | 0.3 marks |
English Language | 0.5 | About 0.9 minutes | 0.125 marks |
Data Analysis and Interpretation | 1.5 | About 1.1 minutes | 0.375 marks |
Awareness pays quickly: It has the shortest time per question and 60 marks, so a prepared candidate can finish early and bank marks.
English is low value in Mains: A question is worth half a mark, so do not spend long on a hard passage there. Keep your English effort for Prelims.
Guessing is costly in Reasoning and DI: A wrong answer costs 0.375 marks, so guess only when you can remove two options.
Sectional cut-offs matter in Prelims: Weakness in one section can end the attempt even with a good total.
Personality Test and interview
The Personality Test is a new online self-report questionnaire taken before the interview. It is reported as non-qualifying but mandatory, and its profile is shared with the interview panel. It has no marks and no topic syllabus, so answer honestly and consistently.
The interview carries 100 marks. The minimum qualifying score is reported as 40 percent for General candidates and 35 percent for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates. Panels usually ask about your graduation subjects, your hometown, banking and economy news, and why you want to join banking.
Final merit calculation
Prelims is only qualifying. The final merit is made from the Mains score and the interview score in an 80:20 ratio. The worked example below is an illustration of the weighting, and it is not an official calculation or a prediction.
Stage | Marks scored | Weightage | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
Mains (out of 225) | 120 | 80 | 42.67 |
Interview (out of 100) | 65 | 20 | 13.00 |
Final merit score (out of 100) | - | 100 | 55.67 |
Because Mains carries four times the weight of the interview, your rank is mostly decided before you reach the panel.
Time management and exam-day strategy
Start with your strongest part of each test: In Reasoning, attempt the puzzle sets you can crack in two or three minutes first.
Do not stay on one set: If a puzzle or DI set does not open up in the first minute or two, move on.
Keep the awareness test fast: Answer what you know and skip what you do not.
Reserve the last two minutes of each test: Use them to mark safe answers you skipped.
Plan the descriptive paper: Spend about three minutes outlining each task before writing.
