Nursing & Paramedical Recruitment

BHU Nursing Officer Eligibility: Qualification, Age and Experience

BHU Nursing Officer eligibility depends on three things: a recognised nursing qualification, valid registration with a nursing council, and hospital experience after qualifying. Age is the fourth check, and it is the one candidates most often get wrong.

Banaras Hindu University advertises these posts irregularly, and as of 19 October 2026 we could not find a newer advertisement than the December 2023 notification. The conditions below are therefore those reported for that cycle by secondary sources. Treat them as a guide, and verify each one against the official notification before you apply or pay any fee. Wherever a rule is uncertain, this page says so.

All entries are indicative and drawn from reports of the last cycle. The official advertisement is the only binding source, and it is on the BHU website.

Educational Qualification

Two routes were reported for the last cycle. Both require a nursing qualification recognised by the Indian Nursing Council or the relevant State Nursing Council. A qualification from an unrecognised institute does not count, however good the training was.

Degree route

  • B.Sc. Nursing: A four-year degree from a recognised institute.

  • Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing: The degree taken by nurses who already hold a diploma, also from a recognised institute.

Diploma route

The GNM diploma was reported as acceptable, with a longer experience requirement to compensate. If you hold both a diploma and a degree, read the notification carefully to see which route and which experience rule applies to you.

Result date and percentage

Recruitment notices usually state that the final result must be declared on or before a cut-off date, which is normally the last date of application. We could not verify a minimum percentage for this post. If the notification sets one, check how it treats CGPA, rounding and compartment attempts. Do not assume a conversion formula without reading the notice.

Nursing Council Registration

Registration is not a formality. Candidates are reported to need registration as a Nurse, or as a Nurse and Midwife, with a State Nursing Council, and it must be valid when the notification requires it.

  • Check validity: An expired registration is one of the most common reasons for rejection.

  • Match the details: The name and date of birth on the registration should match your other documents.

  • Plan renewals early: Renewal can take time, so start well before the application window.

Work Experience

The experience rule is where many applications fail. The reported requirement is one year after a degree and two years after a diploma, gained in a hospital with at least 50 beds.

Question

What to check

When does experience start?

After you obtained the qualification and, where required, registration

Which hospitals count?

A hospital with at least 50 beds. Bed strength should appear on the certificate

What proof is needed?

Experience certificate on letterhead with designation, dates and signature of the authority

Does internship count?

We could not verify this. Read the notification before assuming it does

If your certificate does not state the bed strength, ask your employer for a revised certificate before the application window ends.

Age Limit and Relaxation

An upper age limit of 30 years was reported for the last cycle. What matters is the date on which age is counted, which the notification fixes, and which is usually the last date of application. Do not count from today's date.

Relaxation for reserved categories follows the rules of the university and the Government of India. We could not verify the exact years allowed in this cycle, so the table below shows only the usual categories that rules cover, with the value left for you to confirm.

Category

Upper age relaxation

SC and ST

As per notification

OBC (non-creamy layer)

As per notification

Persons with benchmark disabilities

As per notification

Government servants and ex-servicemen

As per notification

One secondary source mentions no relaxation at all, while others say it follows government norms. That disagreement is a good reason to read the official notice before you plan around a relaxation.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Nationality: Posts in central universities are generally open to Indian citizens. Confirm the exact wording in the notification.

  • Medical fitness: Candidates are expected to be medically fit for hospital duties. The university may ask for a medical examination.

  • Character and conduct: A history of disciplinary action or a pending case can affect selection.

  • Language: The paper was reported to be in English medium, so basic English comprehension matters.

  • Security bond: One aggregator mentions a bond of Rs. 5,00,000 for selected candidates. We could not verify this, so check the notification for any service bond or bond amount.

  • Attempts: No limit on attempts was reported, but the age limit effectively sets the number of chances you have.

Who May Not Be Eligible

  • Final-year students waiting for results: If the notice requires the result by the last date, you cannot apply on the strength of an expected pass.

  • Candidates without council registration: A pending registration application is usually not enough.

  • Applicants with insufficient or unclear experience: Experience in a hospital below 50 beds, or without dates on the certificate, may be rejected.

  • Candidates above the age limit: Age is counted on the date given in the notification, with no exceptions beyond the published relaxations.

  • Those with unrecognised qualifications: A degree or diploma not recognised by the council does not qualify.

Special Cases and Common Doubts

I am working in a private hospital

Whether private hospital experience counts is decided by the notification, which we could not verify for a new cycle. Where it is allowed, expect the hospital to meet the stated bed strength and the certificate to show your dates and designation. Read the notice for any condition on the type of employer.

I have a break in service

The notification decides how gaps in service are treated. Keep the dates on your certificates clear, and check whether the notice asks for continuous service or only a total period after qualifying.

My name differs across documents

Name changes after marriage or a spelling difference between a mark sheet and a registration certificate cause delays. Carry an affidavit or gazette notification explaining the difference, and keep copies ready.

My qualification is from outside my home state

The institute must be recognised by the Indian Nursing Council or the relevant State Nursing Council. Registration, however, is with a State Nursing Council, so check which council the notification accepts.

I am a person with a benchmark disability

Reservation for persons with benchmark disabilities exists under government rules, but the posts and the type of disability that is suitable are listed in the advertisement. Check that list before applying, and keep a valid disability certificate ready.

Reservation and Category Certificates

Vacancies are normally divided across categories under government norms. The table shows the categories you should expect, and what proof each needs. Whether a post is reserved for your category is decided only in the official advertisement.

Category

Certificate usually needed

Point to watch

General (unreserved)

None for category

Age proof and qualification proof still apply

EWS

Income and asset certificate in the prescribed format

Check the financial year the certificate must belong to

OBC (non-creamy layer)

Non-creamy layer certificate

Validity date and central list status

SC and ST

Caste certificate from the competent authority

Name, caste and state must match

PwBD

Disability certificate

Percentage of disability and suitability for the post

Eligibility is not selection

Meeting every condition only lets you sit the written test. Selection depends on your rank in the written paper and on clearing the skill test and verification. That is why preparation should begin alongside the eligibility check, rather than after it.

Documents Checked at Verification

Document

What the university checks

Qualification certificates and mark sheets

Recognised course and result date

Nursing council registration

Validity and matching details

Experience certificate

Dates, designation, hospital bed strength

Proof of date of birth

Age on the notified date

Category or disability certificate

Valid format and date of issue

Photo identity proof

Match with the application

Keep both scanned copies and originals ready. A mismatch between documents can end a candidature even after a high score.

Fee and Application Basics

The last cycle reportedly charged Rs. 1,000 to General, EWS and OBC candidates, with SC, ST, PwBD and women candidates exempt. A fee of Rs. 200 per question was also reported for challenging the provisional answer key. These are indicative figures, and the new notification may change them. The full process is in the BHU Nursing Officer exam overview.

How Eligibility Can Change Between Cycles

Because the university advertises Nursing Officer posts only from time to time, rules can shift between drives. Experience requirements, the age limit, recognised qualifications and the fee have all differed across nursing recruitment notices in India. Older pages may still show last cycle's rules, so follow the official notification.

  • Read the notice end to end: The eligibility clause, the footnotes and the general instructions often carry separate conditions.

  • Note the cut-off dates: There may be different dates for age, result and experience.

  • Save a copy: Download the advertisement, because it may be removed from the site after the drive ends.

Eligibility Self-Check

  1. Do you hold a degree or diploma from a recognised institute, with the result declared?

  2. Is your nursing council registration valid today and on the notified date?

  3. Do you have the required years of experience in a hospital of at least 50 beds, with proof?

  4. Will you be within the age limit on the notified date, after any relaxation you can document?

  5. Do your documents show the same name and date of birth everywhere?

If you can answer yes to all five, you are likely to meet the basic criteria.
