BHU Nursing Eligibility: Age, Marks and Subjects

BHU Nursing eligibility depends on two layers. The first is the set of NEET (UG) rules, because NEET (UG) scores are widely reported as the basis for B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing admission at the College of Nursing, IMS BHU, Varanasi. The second is the programme criteria that Banaras Hindu University publishes for each session, such as the subjects studied in Class 12 and the minimum marks.

This page sets out both layers for the 2026 cycle. The NEET (UG) rules are taken from the NTA information bulletin and are official. The BHU criteria are drawn from an earlier BHU notice and from education portals, and are marked tentative because we could not find the current programme notice. Confirm each point on the BHU admission portal before you apply.

Education portals do not agree on every detail, for example on the treatment of EWS and benchmark disability candidates. That is a good reason to read the official notice rather than any summary, including this one.

Educational Qualification

To apply, you should have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board or university. An earlier official BHU notice for nursing required Intermediate with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, and education portals repeat the same subject combination for the present programme.

Subjects you need

  • Physics, Chemistry and Biology: All three should be studied as subjects in Class 12. The NEET (UG) bulletin accepts Biology or Biotechnology as the biology subject for NEET itself.

  • English: It must be a subject in Class 12 for the nursing programme as reported. If you did not study English, check the notice before you apply.

  • Practical component: The NEET bulletin refers to a qualifying examination that includes practical tests in the science subjects. Ensure that your board marksheet reflects this.

If your Class 12 result is awaited

The NEET (UG) bulletin allows candidates who are appearing in Class 12 to take the exam. However, such a candidate is eligible for admission only if the qualifying examination is passed before the first round of counselling. If you do not pass, or if you do not meet the subject requirements, the NEET score will not help you get a seat. Plan your board result timeline along with the counselling dates.

Open school and private candidates

Candidates from open schooling or state open boards should check two things. First, whether the Class 12 certificate is recognised for NEET (UG) as per the bulletin, and second, whether BHU accepts it for the nursing programme. Write to the college or check the notice if you are unsure.

Minimum Marks by Category

Minimum marks are checked against your Class 12 aggregate in the qualifying subjects. Different portals describe the aggregate in different ways, such as the average of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English or the total of all subjects, so confirm which method BHU uses.

Do not round up your percentage unless the notice allows it. If your result shows a CGPA, convert it using the formula of your board, and keep the board's conversion note ready for verification.

Age Limit

For NEET (UG) 2026, candidates must have completed 17 years of age on or before 31 December of the exam year. The bulletin states that there is no upper age limit for NEET (UG). Before applying, check your date of birth against the cut-off date in the bulletin, because the lower age limit works by year of birth.

The earlier official BHU notice for the College of Nursing gave an age band of 17 to 25 years for all categories as on 31 December of that year. We could not confirm whether an upper age limit applies in the current session. Education portals also mention a few years of relaxation for reserved categories, but those details vary between sources.

NEET (UG) Requirement

The NEET (UG) 2026 bulletin states that NEET (UG) data will be used for B.Sc (Hons.) Nursing admissions, subject to the eligibility criteria of the institution. In practice this means three things for you.

  1. Register and appear in NEET (UG): The application window for 2026 ran from 8 February to 8 March 2026. For a later cycle, watch the NTA website for fresh dates.

  2. Qualify in the percentile: Commonly applied qualifying percentiles are the 50th for general and general-EWS, the 45th for general candidates with benchmark disabilities, and the 40th for reserved categories. These are tentative for your session, so verify them in the bulletin.

  3. Participate in counselling: Qualifying in NEET only makes you eligible to register. A seat depends on your rank, category and the seat matrix.

Nationality, Reservation and Other Conditions

  • Nationality: Indian nationals are the standard applicants. The rules for overseas Indian categories and foreign nationals are published separately by the authorities, and BHU runs a separate admission route for foreign nationals at the university level.

  • Reservation: The NEET (UG) bulletin states that the reservation policy applies to B.Sc Nursing under the relevant counselling. SC, ST, OBC non-creamy layer, EWS and persons with benchmark disabilities can claim reserved seats on submitting valid certificates in the prescribed format.

  • Medical fitness: Nursing programmes generally require candidates to be physically and mentally fit for clinical work. Education portals mention this for BHU as well. Carry the medical certificate if the notice asks for it.

  • One regular degree at a time: The BHU undergraduate bulletin for 2026 states that pursuing two regular degree programmes at the same time is not allowed. Check how this rule applies if you are already enrolled elsewhere.

Eligibility for Different Types of Candidates

Candidate type

Position

What to do

Class 12 appearing this year

Can take NEET (UG); must pass before the first counselling round

Keep the board result date in mind

Passed Class 12 earlier

Can apply if marks and subjects meet the criteria

Check the notice for any limit on the year of passing

Candidate from a non-science stream

Not eligible unless Physics, Chemistry and Biology were studied

Additional subject routes need written confirmation

Candidate with a benchmark disability

Reservation and compensatory time may apply

Certificate and medical assessment as per the notice

Candidate from another board

Eligible if the board is recognised

Carry the equivalence certificate where asked

The positions in the table follow the general rules in the NEET (UG) bulletin and common admission practice. They are not a BHU ruling, so a written confirmation from the college is the safest route for any unusual case.

Who May Not Be Eligible

You may be rejected at the counselling or verification stage in the following common situations. They are drawn from how admissions normally work and are not an official list.

  • Class 12 did not include Biology or Biotechnology, or did not include English where the notice requires it.

  • Aggregate marks fall below the minimum even though the NEET score is high.

  • The Class 12 result was not declared by the date stated for verification.

  • Category or EWS certificate is in the wrong format, expired or issued after the permitted date.

  • Name, date of birth or photograph on the NEET scorecard does not match the school records.

  • Not meeting the age condition on the stated date.

Fee and Documents

The NEET (UG) 2026 examination fee was Rs. 1,700 for General, Rs. 1,600 for General-EWS and OBC-NCL, and Rs. 1,000 for SC, ST, PwBD and Third Gender candidates, with bank charges and GST extra and no refund. The BHU programme fee and any application fee are announced with the admission notice, and we have not listed them because no verified figure was available.

Keep ready the NEET scorecard and admit card, Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets, category or EWS certificate if applicable, disability certificate if applicable, a photo ID and passport size photographs.

How to Verify Your Eligibility

Do not rely on a single website. Compare three sources in this order, and trust the first over the others.

  1. The BHU admission portal: Look for the notice or bulletin that covers B.Sc Nursing in your session. It will state the subjects, marks, age and seat details.

  2. The NEET (UG) bulletin: It sets the exam eligibility, qualifying percentile and the way the score is used for nursing admission.

  3. The counselling notice: It gives the registration process, the category rules and the document list for the round you are taking part in.

If the sources disagree, follow the BHU notice and write to the college for clarification. Keep a copy of any reply along with your documents.

Eligibility Checklist

Use this short checklist before you pay any fee.
