Prelims completed: The preliminary exam was held on 18 and 21 January 2026, and the result came out on 16 March 2026. The Commission shortlisted 35,857 candidates for the mains.
Mains held and result declared: The mains written exam took place in two shifts on 27 May 2026. The result, published on 19 June 2026, listed 10,759 candidates for the physical test.
PET announced, then postponed: A notice dated 12 August 2026 scheduled the physical test and document verification in Patna for September and October 2026. A notice dated 28 August 2026 postponed it until further orders.
Mains cancelled: On 23 September 2026, the Commission cancelled the mains written exam of 27 May 2026, citing unavoidable reasons. It said the new date will be announced separately.
Two days earlier, on 21 September 2026, BPSSC had also issued a notice calling social media claims that the entire recruitment was cancelled false and misleading. Only the mains written exam has been cancelled. The prelims result stands, so candidates who qualified the prelims should keep preparing for the re-conducted mains.
Treat news from unofficial channels with care. The Commission has asked candidates to rely only on its website and to stay alert to touts. Check the notices section of the official website regularly: https://bpssc.bihar.gov.in/

Bihar Police SI Exam Pattern
All written papers are objective, with 100 questions for 200 marks in two hours. Each wrong answer costs 0.2 marks.
Stage | Paper | Questions | Marks | Time | Nature |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Prelims | General Knowledge and Current Affairs | 100 | 200 | 2 hours | Qualifying, minimum 30% |
Mains | Paper 1: General Hindi | 100 | 200 | 2 hours | Qualifying, minimum 30% |
Mains | Paper 2: General Studies | 100 | 200 | 2 hours | Counted for merit |
Physical | PET and PST | Not applicable | No marks | As per event | Qualifying |
What this means for you
Paper 2 decides your rank: Prelims marks and the Hindi paper only decide whether you move ahead. Your final position depends on Mains Paper 2.
Do not neglect Hindi: A score under 30% in General Hindi ends your candidature, however well you do in General Studies.
The penalty is light: A wrong answer costs one-tenth of what a correct one earns, so a careful guess after ruling out options is usually worth taking.
Prelims is normalised: Because the prelims runs in several shifts, BPSSC uses the equi-percentile method to normalise scores.
For marking rules, minimum marks for merit and shift-wise strategy, see the detailed Bihar Police SI exam pattern guide.
Bihar Police SI Syllabus Summary
BPSSC names the subjects for each paper but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topic areas below come from the official subject list and from questions asked in earlier papers, so use them as a working checklist.
Paper | Official subjects | Topics to prioritise |
|---|---|---|
Prelims | General Knowledge and Current Affairs | Polity, history, geography, general science, economy, Bihar GK, national and state current affairs |
Mains Paper 1 | General Hindi | Grammar (sandhi, samas, upsarg, pratyay), synonyms and antonyms, idioms, error correction, comprehension |
Mains Paper 2 | General Studies, General Science, Civics, Indian History, Indian Geography, Mathematics and Mental Ability | Indian polity, modern history, physical and Indian geography, physics, chemistry, biology, arithmetic, reasoning |
The full topic breakdown, with where to start, is on the Bihar Police SI syllabus page.
Selection Process
Preliminary exam: Qualifying only. Candidates scoring at least 30% are shortlisted category-wise at about 20 times the vacancies.
Mains written exam: Paper 1 (General Hindi) needs 30% to qualify. Paper 2 (General Studies) counts for merit, with category-wise minimum marks: 40% for unreserved, 36.5% for BC, 34% for EBC, and 32% for SC, ST and women.
Physical test: About six times the category-wise vacancies are called for the PET and physical standards test, which is qualifying only.
Document verification and medical: Certificates are checked, followed by a medical examination and character verification before appointment.
Final merit: Prepared from Mains Paper 2 marks among candidates who clear every stage. Ties go to the older candidate, then to higher qualification, then by alphabetical order of names.
PET standards
Event | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
Running | 1.6 km in 6 minutes 30 seconds | 1 km in 6 minutes |
High jump | 4 feet | 3 feet |
Long jump | 12 feet | 9 feet |
Shot put | 16 lb shot, 16 feet | 12 lb shot, 10 feet |
You must clear every event. Failing any one leads to disqualification, so physical training should start well before the written result.
Salary and Career Growth
A Bihar Police Sub Inspector is placed at Level 6 of the pay matrix, which starts at a basic pay of Rs. 35,400 and goes up to Rs. 1,12,400. On top of basic pay, the officer receives dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other allowances under Bihar government rules.
Component | Details |
|---|---|
Pay level | Level 6 (as per advertisement) |
Basic pay range | Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400 |
Allowances | DA, HRA and other admissible allowances as per state rules |
In-hand salary varies with the current DA rate, posting city and deductions, so any figure quoted online is an estimate rather than an official number. A Sub Inspector is the officer in charge of investigation at the police station level. With service, SIs become eligible for promotion to Inspector and to higher ranks through departmental promotion, subject to vacancies and service rules.
How to Prepare for Bihar Police SI
With the mains to be re-conducted, prelims-qualified candidates effectively get extra preparation time. Use it to strengthen Paper 2, protect your Hindi score and keep your fitness ready for the PET.
For the prelims
Build static GK first: Cover polity, history, geography and general science from standard school-level books before moving to one-liners.
Add Bihar GK: Bihar history, geography, economy, schemes and important personalities appear regularly.
Keep current affairs monthly: Make short notes every month and revise the last 10 to 12 months before the exam.
For the mains
General Hindi: Practise grammar rules daily for 30 to 40 minutes. Aim well above 30%, since this paper can end your selection.
General Studies: Combine static subjects with arithmetic and reasoning. Mathematics and mental ability questions reward regular timed practice.
Revision cycles: Keep an error log and revise it weekly, so the same mistakes do not repeat.
Practise with mock tests
Full-length timed tests show whether you can finish 100 questions in two hours with good accuracy. For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt Bihar Police SI online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to plan your revision. Pair them with previous year papers to understand the real difficulty level.
Keep up the physical training
The physical test has been postponed, not removed. Run three to four times a week and practise the jumps and shot put, so you are ready when BPSSC announces the new schedule.
Cut-off Reference
The table shows the category-wise cut-off marks (out of 200) from the mains result of 19 June 2026. That result was based on the exam BPSSC later cancelled, so treat these figures as a benchmark only.
Category | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
Unreserved | 134.00 | 116.20 |
EWS | 127.40 | 109.60 |
BC | 129.20 | 110.00 |
EBC | 126.80 | 105.40 |
SC | 114.40 | 87.00 |
ST | 109.80 | 92.80 |
Cut-offs change with difficulty, vacancies and the number of candidates. Aim for a clear margin above these figures rather than a bare pass. Category-wise prelims and mains figures are on the Bihar Police SI cut-off page.
