BPSC AEDO Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Relaxation

BPSC AEDO eligibility comes down to three checks: you must be an Indian citizen, hold a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university, and fall within the age limit for your category as on 1 August 2025. The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) set these rules in Advertisement No. 87/2025 for 935 posts of Assistant Education Development Officer in Bihar's Education Department.

This page explains each condition in detail: the qualification rules, category-wise upper age limits, age relaxations, how Bihar domicile affects reservation, and the mistakes that most often get applications rejected. The written exam held in April 2026 was cancelled, and BPSC has said a fresh exam will be held for candidates who applied under this advertisement. No new application window has been announced, so these eligibility rules continue to apply to the current cycle.

Educational Qualification

The qualification requirement for this post is a bachelor's degree from a university recognised by law, or an equivalent qualification. No particular subject or stream is required. A graduate in arts, science, commerce, engineering, agriculture or any other discipline can apply.

Points to note about the degree

  • No minimum percentage: The notification asks for a degree, not a minimum score. Pass class or division does not affect eligibility.

  • No teaching degree needed: Although the post is in the Education Department, a B.Ed, D.El.Ed or teacher eligibility test is not part of the requirement.

  • Recognised university only: The degree must come from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission or a body of equal standing. Distance and open university degrees are acceptable only if the programme itself is recognised.

  • Equivalent qualifications: If your degree is from an institution whose equivalence may be questioned, keep the equivalence certificate or recognition proof ready for document verification.

  • Final-year students: BPSC generally expects the qualification to be complete by the last date of application. Do not rely on a pending result unless the notification explicitly permits it.

Your degree certificate and marksheets are checked during document verification, not at the time you apply. A wrong claim at the application stage can lead to cancellation of candidature even after you clear the written exam.

BPSC AEDO Age Limit

Age is calculated as on 1 August 2025. The minimum age is 21 years for all candidates. The upper age limit depends on your category and, for unreserved candidates, on gender.

Economically Weaker Section (EWS) candidates get reservation in posts but follow the unreserved age limits. The higher limits for BC, EBC, SC and ST apply only to candidates who are permanent residents of Bihar and hold a valid category certificate.

How to check your own age

Use the date of birth on your Class 10 certificate, because that is the record BPSC accepts. Then work out your age on 1 August 2025, not on the day you apply or the day of the exam.

  • Example 1: A candidate born in March 2005 would be 20 on 1 August 2025. They are below the minimum age and not eligible for this cycle, even though they turn 21 before the re-exam.

  • Example 2: An unreserved male candidate born in 1991 would be 33 or 34 on the reference date, well within the limit of 37.

  • Example 3: An unreserved female candidate born in early 1987 would be 38 on the reference date. She is above the male limit but within the female limit of 40, so she is eligible.

The age reference date does not move because the exam was postponed or cancelled. Eligibility was fixed by the advertisement, so delays in the exam do not make an over-age candidate eligible or an under-age candidate eligible later.

Age Relaxation Rules

Beyond the category-wise limits above, the notification provides additional relaxation for some groups, as per Bihar government rules.

Group

Upper age relaxation

Persons with Disabilities (benchmark disability)

10 years over the limit of their category

Ex-servicemen

As per Bihar government rules, subject to the conditions in the notification

Serving Bihar government employees

As per the notification, with a valid certificate from the employer

  • Certificates decide relaxation: Relaxation is given only if you hold the required certificate (disability, category, service) in the format and validity period the notification specifies.

  • Relaxations do not stack freely: Disability relaxation is added to your category limit, but you cannot combine unrelated relaxations beyond what the rules allow. Read the relaxation clause carefully if you fall in more than one group.

  • Non-domicile candidates: If you are not a permanent resident of Bihar, you are treated as unreserved and the unreserved male or female limit applies to you.

Bihar Domicile and Reservation

Candidates from any state can apply for the AEDO post. Reservation, however, works differently depending on where you are domiciled.

  • Bihar permanent residents: Eligible for category reservation (EWS, BC, EBC, SC, ST), the higher age limits for those categories, and horizontal reservation for women, subject to valid certificates.

  • Candidates from other states: Can apply only in the unreserved category, even if they belong to a reserved category in their home state. Their caste certificate from another state does not give them reservation in Bihar.

  • Women candidates: Bihar provides horizontal reservation for women who are permanent residents of the state. Of the 935 posts, 319 are reserved for women across categories.

  • Married women: Reservation certificates are usually expected to be issued on the basis of the father's details and address, not the husband's. Check the certificate clause in the notification if this applies to you.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen of India.

  • No attempt limit: The notification does not cap the number of attempts. As long as you meet the age rule for a given advertisement, you can apply.

  • Language readiness: There is no language condition in the eligibility rules, but the written exam includes a qualifying paper in Hindi (70 marks) and English (30 marks). You must score at least 30% in each part, so comfortable reading of Hindi is effectively necessary. The BPSC AEDO exam pattern explains this rule in detail.

  • Correct information: All details in the online form, including name, date of birth, category and qualification, must match your certificates exactly.

  • Medical and character conditions: Appointment is subject to the usual government conditions on medical fitness and character verification, which are checked at the appointment stage.

Who Is Not Eligible

Most rejections happen for reasons that a careful candidate could have spotted before applying. You are not eligible, or your claim will not be accepted, if:

  • You were under 21 on 1 August 2025: Turning 21 later does not help for this advertisement.

  • You were above your category's upper limit on the reference date: Postponements do not extend the age limit.

  • You did not hold a recognised degree by the required date: Diplomas and incomplete degrees do not count.

  • You claimed reservation without Bihar domicile: A reserved category from another state is treated as unreserved here.

  • Your certificate is invalid or in the wrong format: Caste, EWS, disability or domicile certificates must be issued by the competent authority and fall within the validity period the notification sets.

  • Your details do not match: A mismatch between the application and documents, especially in date of birth or category, can lead to cancellation at the verification stage.

Application Fee and Documents

The application window for this advertisement closed on 12 December 2025, after a reopened window from 5 to 12 December 2025. The examination fee reported for this advertisement is Rs. 100 for all categories, plus bank charges. If BPSC opens a new window, follow the fee stated in that notice.

Keep these documents ready for verification:

  • Age proof: Class 10 certificate showing date of birth.

  • Qualification proof: Graduation degree and marksheets.

  • Category and domicile: Caste or EWS certificate and Bihar residence certificate, if claiming reservation.

  • Special category proof: Disability, ex-servicemen or government service certificates, where applicable.

  • Identity proof: A valid photo ID such as Aadhaar, voter ID or PAN card.

  3. Minimum age: Were you at least 21 years old on 1 August 2025?

  4. Maximum age: Were you within the upper limit for your category and gender on that date?

  5. Reservation claim: If you claimed a reserved category, are you a permanent resident of Bihar with valid certificates?
