Border Security Force Constable

BSF Constable is a recruitment exam conducted by Border Security Force for the recruitment of Constables, relevant to candidates preparing for the armed forces and paramilitary recruitment.

BSF Constable recruitment is conducted by the Border Security Force, a central armed police force under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The largest regular intake is the Constable (Tradesman) recruitment, which fills posts such as Cook, Water Carrier, Washerman, Barber, Sweeper, Cobbler, Tailor and Carpenter. This guide explains the latest cycle, the selection stages and how to prepare for the BSF Constable written test.

The most recent cycle on record is the Constable (Tradesman) recruitment notified in July 2025 for 3,588 posts, with physical tests held between December 2025 and March 2026. As of 21 October 2026, a fresh Tradesman notification and the written test date had not been confirmed in the sources we could check. Eligibility in Brief

Educational qualification

All candidates need a Class 10 (matriculation) pass or equivalent. Technical trades such as Carpenter, Plumber, Painter and Electrician ask for an ITI certificate or trade experience. Trades such as Cook, Water Carrier and Waiter ask for relevant kitchen or food-production training, while Cobbler, Tailor, Barber and Washerman ask for proficiency in the trade.

Age limit

The 2025-26 cycle accepted candidates aged 18 to 25 years on the date fixed in the notification. Relaxation is given as per central government rules, for example 3 years for OBC and 5 years for SC and ST. Earlier cycles used a narrower range, so always check the active notification. Read the full details on the BSF Constable eligibility page.

Application Fee and How to Apply

In the last cycle, the fee was reported as Rs. 100 for General, OBC and EWS male candidates, with exemption for SC, ST, ex-servicemen and women candidates. Confirm this in the next notification. Applications are online only.

  1. Open the official recruitment portal and register with a valid mobile number and email.

  2. Log in and fill in the application with your trade preference and category details.

  3. Upload the photograph, signature and documents in the sizes the notification asks for.

  4. Pay the fee online if it applies to you, then submit and save a printout.

Common reasons for rejection include a wrong trade choice, a certificate that does not match the trade requirement, a mismatched name or date of birth and blurred uploads.

Selection Process and Exam Pattern

The selection runs in stages, and every stage is qualifying for the next. In the 2025-26 cycle, the physical tests came first, and the written test followed for shortlisted candidates.

  1. Physical Standard Test (PST): height and, for male candidates, chest measurement.

  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET): a timed run, reported as 5 km in 24 minutes for men and 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds for women.

  3. Trade test: a practical test of the skill needed for your trade.

  4. Document verification: original certificates are checked.

  5. Written test: objective paper, reported as 100 questions for 100 marks in 2 hours.

  6. Medical examination: detailed medical and, if needed, a review medical.

The exact order of the trade test, document verification and written test can change between cycles, so follow the schedule in your admit card.

What this means for you:

  • Balanced effort: each section carries equal marks, so a weak section cannot be ignored.

  • Marking: negative marking details differ across reports, so check the paper instructions and avoid blind guesses.

  • Qualifying marks: earlier notifications set a minimum percentage for the written test, so aim well above it.

Older pages may still show an earlier selection order, so follow the official notification. See the BSF Constable exam pattern page for the stage-wise breakdown.

Syllabus Summary

BSF names the written test areas but does not publish a detailed topic-wise syllabus in its notice. The table below is a working checklist built from the test areas and from the type of questions asked in earlier cycles.

Salary and Career Growth

Constable (Tradesman) posts sit in Pay Level 3 of the pay matrix, with a pay range of Rs. 21,700 to Rs. 69,100 per month, plus allowances such as dearness allowance and house rent allowance. The in-hand amount depends on the posting and allowances, so treat any monthly figure you see online as an estimate. Promotion to Head Constable and beyond follows the force's seniority and departmental examination rules.

Other BSF Constable Entries

BSF also recruits Constables through other routes, and the rules differ from the Tradesman cycle.

  • Constable (GD) Sports Quota: reported in December 2025 with 549 posts and an age range of 18 to 23 years, selected on sports achievement, documents, PST and medical. Treat these figures as indicative and verify them in the official notice.

  • Constable (GD) through SSC: most general duty vacancies in BSF are filled through the SSC GD Constable exam, which has its own notification and pattern.

This page focuses on the Constable (Tradesman) recruitment unless stated otherwise.

How to Prepare for BSF Constable

Prepare for the physical and written stages together, because the written test follows shortly after the physical stages and the gap can be short.

  • Physical: build running stamina several times a week and track your 5 km or 1.6 km timing.

  • Written test: cover each of the four sections daily, with Mathematics and reasoning practice every day.

  • Trade skill: practise the practical skill for your chosen trade, as the trade test is qualifying.

  • Documents: keep originals, trade certificates and category proofs ready well before verification.

For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt BSF Constable online mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to plan your revision. Pair them with short notes from the study notes section to revise faster.

Cut-Off Reference

BSF publishes written test cut-offs region-wise, trade-wise and category-wise, so there is no single national figure. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat last year's figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them rather than a bare pass. Details are on the BSF Constable cut-off page.
