BSF Constable Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Physical Standards
BSF Constable eligibility depends on your age, education, trade qualification and physical fitness. This page covers the Constable (Tradesman) recruitment of the Border Security Force, using the 2025-26 notification as the latest reference, and explains what you need before applying.
Eligibility rules, especially the age limit and the cut-off date for counting age, are fixed in each notification and can change between cycles. A new Tradesman notification had not been confirmed as of 21 October 2026, so use the figures below to plan, and verify them once the next notice is out.

BSF Constable Eligibility at a Glance
Criterion | Requirement (2025-26 cycle, as reported) |
|---|---|
Nationality | Indian citizen (Nepal or Bhutan subjects with a valid eligibility certificate) |
Education | Class 10 pass plus trade-specific requirement |
Age | 18 to 25 years on the date fixed in the notification |
Physical | Meet PST height and chest standards and clear the PET |
Medical | Fit as per BSF medical standards |
Educational Qualification
Every candidate needs a Class 10 (matriculation) pass or equivalent from a recognised board. On top of this, each trade has its own requirement, which is checked at document verification and in the trade test.
Trades | Additional requirement (reported) |
|---|---|
Carpenter, Plumber, Painter, Electrician, Pump Operator, Upholsterer | ITI certificate in the trade, or a shorter course with experience |
Cook, Water Carrier, Waiter | Relevant food production or kitchen training from a recognised institute |
Cobbler, Tailor, Washerman, Barber, Sweeper | Proficiency in the trade |
The exact course duration and experience needed are listed trade by trade in the notification, and third-party websites summarise them differently. Read the trade row for the post you want, and keep your certificate and result ready. If your qualification is a grade or CGPA, check whether an equivalence certificate is needed.
Age Limit and Relaxation
In the 2025-26 cycle, the age limit was 18 to 25 years. Earlier Tradesman cycles used a narrower range of 18 to 23 years, so do not rely on old pages. The notification fixes the date on which your age is counted, and you must be within the range on that date.
Category | Upper age relaxation |
|---|---|
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe | 5 years |
Other Backward Classes | 3 years |
Ex-servicemen | As per government rules |
Other special categories | As per government rules and the notification |
Relaxations are not added together. Candidates usually get the benefit of the single highest category that applies. The upper age limit for OBC and SC or ST candidates in the last cycle is therefore reported as 28 and 30 years.
Nationality and Other Conditions
Citizenship: Indian citizens can apply. Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan need a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India.
Gender: both men and women can apply, but vacancies for women are limited to some trades and are much fewer.
Trade choice: you apply for a specific trade, so choose one where your qualification matches.
Character: a candidate with a criminal record or a pending case may be rejected after verification.
Physical Standards
The PST sets minimum height for all candidates and chest for male candidates. The table shows the reported minimums for the 2025 notification. Relaxation applies for Scheduled Tribes and for certain hill, north-eastern and other regions, and websites quote different numbers, so treat this table as indicative and confirm the full table in the notification.
Category | Male height | Female height |
|---|---|---|
General | 165 cm | 155 cm |
Scheduled Tribes | 160 cm | 148 cm |
Male candidates need a minimum chest of 75 to 80 cm as reported. After the PST, the PET is a timed run, reported as 5 km in 24 minutes for men and 1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds for women.
Who Is Not Eligible
Over or under age: candidates outside the age range on the counting date.
Trade mismatch: candidates whose certificate or experience does not match the trade.
Below PST standards: candidates short of the minimum height or chest.
Medically unfit: candidates who fail the detailed and review medical.
Wrong or false documents: any false information leads to cancellation of candidature.
Fee and Documents
In the last cycle, the fee was reported as Rs. 100 for General, OBC and EWS male candidates, with exemption for SC, ST, ex-servicemen and women. Keep these ready: Class 10 certificate, trade or ITI certificate, category certificate, identity proof, domicile proof if you claim regional relaxation, and passport-size photographs. The full application process is in the BSF Constable overview.
Sports Quota Eligibility
BSF also recruits Constable (GD) through a sports quota, which has different rules. In the December 2025 coverage, the age range was reported as 18 to 23 years, with Class 10 and a recognised sports achievement required. These figures are indicative, so check the official notification of that recruitment.
