BSF Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Physical Standards

BSF eligibility is decided post by post, and each notification fixes its own age limit, qualification and physical standards. A candidate who is eligible for Constable (Tradesman) may not be eligible for Constable (GD) or Sub-Inspector (GD), so the first job is to know which post you are aiming for.

This page explains BSF eligibility for the three main recruitment routes: Constable (Tradesman), Constable (GD) through the Staff Selection Commission, and Sub-Inspector (GD) through SSC CPO. The latest BSF-run cycle used here is the Constable (Tradesman) recruitment advertised in July 2025. Figures are as reported from the notifications, and the cut-off dates for age differ by route, so verify them in the official notice before you apply.

The Tradesman reference date was reported as 23 or 25 August 2025 by different sources, so check the notification for the exact date. The official BSF recruitment portal is https://rectt.bsf.gov.in/, and SSC notices are on https://ssc.gov.in/.

Nationality and General Conditions

A candidate must be an Indian citizen to apply for any BSF post. Other conditions that usually apply are:

  • Character and conduct: Candidates with a criminal case or a record of dismissal from government service are normally not considered. The notification states the exact rule.

  • Domicile or state-wise vacancies: For the Tradesman cycle, some sources report that candidates should apply against their domicile state. Read the vacancy table and the instructions on this point carefully before choosing a state.

  • Single application: Submitting more than one application for the same post can lead to rejection of all of them.

  • Willingness to serve anywhere: BSF posts involve border duty and transfers across India.

BSF Educational Qualification

Constable (Tradesman)

Every Tradesman post requires Class 10 from a recognised board. Beyond that, the requirement changes by trade. The table follows the 2025 notification as reported.

Trades

Qualification required

Cook, Water Carrier, Waiter

Class 10 pass, plus a food production or kitchen course from NSDC or a recognised institute

Carpenter, Plumber, Painter, Electrician, Pump Operator, Upholsterer

Class 10 pass, plus a 2-year ITI in the trade, or a 1-year ITI or vocational course with 1 year of experience

Cobbler, Tailor, Washerman, Barber, Sweeper, Khoji or Syce

Class 10 pass, plus proficiency in the trade, which is checked in the trade test

Choose your trade based on a certificate or skill you actually hold. A trade test is part of the process, so a certificate without real skill will not take you through.

Constable (GD)

Class 10 pass or equivalent from a recognised board. The qualification must be held by the cut-off date given in the SSC notification.

Sub-Inspector (GD)

A bachelor's degree from a recognised university. In the SSC CPO 2026 notification as reported, final-year students may apply if they hold the degree by the closing date mentioned in the notice. Candidates should keep the provisional or final degree certificate ready.

BSF Age Limit and Relaxation

Age is counted from your date of birth in the Class 10 certificate. The limits reported for each route are:

Post

Age limit

Date of birth window

Constable (Tradesman)

18 to 25 years

Born roughly between late August 2000 and late August 2007, for the 2025 cycle

Constable (GD) via SSC

18 to 23 years

Born between 2 January 2003 and 1 January 2008, for the 2026 cycle

Sub-Inspector (GD) via SSC CPO

20 to 25 years

Born between 2 August 2001 and 1 August 2006, for the 2026 cycle

The date-of-birth windows follow from the age limits and reference dates reported above. Use them as a quick check and confirm against the notification.

Upper age relaxation

Upper age relaxation

SC and ST

OBC

PwD (where applicable to the post)

10 years, as reported for GD sports quota recruitment

Ex-servicemen and others

As per central government rules and the notification

Relaxation applies only to the upper age limit, and you must hold a valid category certificate. EWS candidates generally receive no age relaxation. For Tradesman posts, check whether your trade is open to women, because vacancies for women are limited to a few trades.

BSF Physical Standards

Physical standards are an eligibility condition. A candidate who does not meet them is rejected, however strong the written marks may be. The figures below are the general category standards reported for the two constable routes.

Standard

Constable (Tradesman)

Constable (GD) via SSC

Male height

165 cm

170 cm

Male chest

157 cm

Male race

5 km in 24 minutes

5 km in 24 minutes

Female race

1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds

1.6 km in 8 minutes 30 seconds

For the Tradesman cycle, lower height standards are reported for ST candidates and for specified regions, for example 160 cm for ST men and 148 cm for ST women, and lower values for the north-eastern states, hill regions and Gorkha areas. The exact table is in the notification.

Medical Standards

A detailed medical examination is the last stage for every route. The notification lists the standards for vision, hearing, body proportion and the conditions that lead to rejection. Common reasons for failing medical tests include poor eyesight beyond the permitted limit, colour blindness, knock knees, flat feet and certain skin or ear conditions. Get a basic check-up done before you apply, so that you do not spend months on a post you cannot qualify for.

Eligibility for Sports Quota Constables

BSF also recruits Constable (GD) under a sports quota directly, through its own recruitment portal. The December 2025 advertisement was reported to cover about 549 posts. The reported conditions were a Class 10 pass, an upper age limit of 23 years with relaxation for reserved categories, and achievements in recognised sports disciplines. Selection is based on sports achievement points, a physical fitness test, certificate verification and a medical examination. If you are a sportsperson, check the sports list and the certificate rules in the notification.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Over or under age: Even a few days beyond the upper limit on the reference date leads to rejection.

  • Without the trade qualification: A Tradesman applicant without the required ITI, course or proficiency for the chosen trade is not eligible for that trade.

  • Short of physical standards: Height, chest or race time below the notified standard is a disqualifier.

  • Not an Indian citizen: Citizenship is mandatory.

  • Wrong or false details: Wrong information or forged certificates can lead to cancellation of candidature at any stage.

  • Women applying for male-only trades: Vacancies for women are limited to specified trades.

Application Fee and Documents

For the Tradesman cycle, SC, ST and women candidates were exempt from the fee, while general, OBC and EWS male candidates paid it. Reports give different amounts (Rs. 100 in some, Rs. 150 plus GST in others), so check the notification. SSC GD and CPO fees are set by SSC.

Keep the following ready to prove eligibility:

  • Class 10 certificate: For qualification and date of birth.

  • Trade certificate or experience proof: For the Tradesman post you choose.

  • Category and domicile certificates: For relaxation and state-wise vacancies.

  • Degree certificate: For Sub-Inspector.

  • Photo ID: A valid government ID that matches your application.

Common Eligibility Doubts

  • Can I apply for GD and Tradesman together? Yes, they are separate recruitments with separate forms. Check that your age and qualification fit each one on its own reference date.

  • Does the age relaxation stack? No. If you belong to more than one relaxed category, the highest single relaxation usually applies, not the sum. The notification confirms the rule.

  • Is a Class 10 pass enough for every Tradesman trade? No. Several trades also need an ITI, a course or experience, as shown in the qualification table.

  • What if my name differs across documents? Get an affidavit or corrected certificate before the form is filled. Name and date of birth mismatches are a frequent cause of rejection at document verification.

  • Is there an attempt limit? The notification summaries we reviewed do not mention one for Tradesman. Check the SSC notice for GD and CPO, since SSC rules differ.

Eligibility for Other BSF Posts

BSF also recruits for Head Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector and technical or ministerial posts through separate notifications. Radio Operator and Radio Mechanic head constable posts are covered on their own page, which you can reach through BSF RO radio operator and mechanic eligibility. Some Air Wing and technical posts are filled by deputation or re-employment of serving personnel and ex-servicemen, with age limits that are very different from constable posts. Always read the notification for the exact post, because a rule that applies to constables will not necessarily apply there.

A candidate who ticks every row can apply with confidence. One who fails a row should fix it or choose another route, rather than hoping the issue is overlooked.

How to Check Your Eligibility Before Applying

  1. Pick the route: Decide between Tradesman, Constable GD and Sub-Inspector based on your qualification.

  2. Read the notification: Download the PDF from https://rectt.bsf.gov.in/ or https://ssc.gov.in/ and find the reference date for age.

  3. Check age and category: Work out your age as on that date and apply the relaxation that fits your category.

  4. Match the trade: For Tradesman posts, confirm that your certificate fits the trade.

  5. Measure yourself: Check height and chest, and time a 5 km or 1.6 km run honestly.

  6. Fix gaps early: If you fall short on fitness, train; if on documents, apply for them before the notification.
