BSF Exam Pattern 2026: Stages, Marks and Marking Scheme for Tradesman, GD and SI

The BSF exam pattern is not the same for every post. Constable (Tradesman) is recruited by the Border Security Force through physical tests, a 100-mark written paper, a trade test and a medical examination. Constable (GD) and Sub-Inspector (GD) in BSF come through Staff Selection Commission exams, which have their own papers and a different order of stages. Knowing which pattern applies to you decides how you split your time between running and studying.

This page sets out the BSF exam pattern stage by stage, with marks, questions, duration and negative marking. The latest BSF-run cycle covered here is the Constable (Tradesman) recruitment advertised in July 2025. Its written exam had not been scheduled when this page was drafted (29 October 2026), so the pattern below is as reported from the notification and should be confirmed in the exam notice.

The Tradesman figures are as reported from the 2025 notification. Confirm them in the written exam notice on https://rectt.bsf.gov.in/ before you finalise your strategy.

Key Changes to Know

  • Physical tests came first in the Tradesman cycle: In the 2025 to 2026 cycle, PST and PET were held first, and only shortlisted candidates move to the written exam. Some older pages show the written test first, which was not the sequence followed in this cycle.

  • SSC CPO pattern was revised: Reports of the SSC CPO 2026 notification say the structure of both papers changed from earlier years. This affects the Sub-Inspector route directly.

  • Mode may be announced later: Reports suggest the Tradesman written paper could be OMR-based or computer-based. The exam notice will confirm which one.

BSF Constable (Tradesman) Exam Pattern

The Tradesman selection has five stages. The physical stages are qualifying, and the written exam is a shortlisting stage for the later steps. Final selection depends on how you perform in all applicable stages and on verification of your eligibility.

The paper is objective, with one mark per question and a total time of 2 hours. Questions are reported to appear in Hindi and English. The fourth section lets you choose English or Hindi, so use the language in which you read and answer faster.

One source reports qualifying marks of 35 percent for General and ex-servicemen candidates and 33 percent for SC, ST and OBC candidates. This is not confirmed in the notification summaries we could verify, so treat it as indicative until the exam notice confirms it.

Physical Standard Test and Physical Efficiency Test

For the Tradesman cycle, the physical tests are held at the start. They are not marked for merit. They decide whether you move ahead. The standards below are the general category figures as reported; standards for ST candidates and for hill and north-eastern regions are lower.

The PET is conducted with electronic timing and video recording, as reported, and each event must be cleared. A candidate who fails the race cannot move to the written stage, no matter how strong the paper preparation is.

Trade Test, Document Verification and Medical Examination

The trade test checks practical skill in your trade. A tailor may be asked to cut and stitch, a barber to cut hair and shave, and a cobbler to repair footwear. Cooks, carpenters, electricians and other trades are tested on their own skills.

At document verification, carry original certificates for Class 10, your trade qualification, category, domicile and any relaxation claimed. A mismatch in name or date of birth can cause rejection. The detailed medical examination covers vision, hearing and general fitness against the standards in the notification.

BSF Constable (GD) Exam Pattern through SSC

BSF Constable (GD) vacancies are filled through the SSC computer-based exam, which comes before the physical tests. SSC GD 2026 invited applications from 1 to 31 December 2025, and BSF's share was reported at 616 posts, a tentative figure.

The paper lasts 60 minutes, carries 2 marks per question and deducts 0.25 mark for each wrong answer. Because it runs in several shifts, SSC normalises scores. After the written exam come the PET, PST and detailed medical examination. The physical standards for GD are higher than for Tradesman, including a general male height of 170 cm and 157 cm for women, as reported.

BSF Sub-Inspector (GD) Exam Pattern through SSC CPO

Sub-Inspector (GD) posts in BSF are part of the SSC CPO recruitment for Delhi Police and CAPFs. SSC CPO 2026 was notified on 10 September 2026, and the Paper I dates were reported as revised to 23 to 28 November 2026. The pattern reported for the 2026 cycle is shown below.

Paper

Paper I

100 questions, 100 marks: Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English (25 each)

Paper II

160 questions, 320 marks: Reasoning, General Awareness and Quantitative Aptitude (20 questions and 40 marks each) and English Comprehension (100 questions, 200 marks)

Paper II is reported to carry 0.50 mark negative marking per wrong answer. The sequence is Paper I, then PET and PST, then Paper II, then medical examination. These details come from reports of the SSC notification, so read the SSC notice at https://ssc.gov.in/ for the final structure and marking.

The difference matters in practice. With no deduction, a guess in the Tradesman paper costs nothing. In SSC GD, a wrong answer costs one-eighth of the marks a right answer earns, so a random guess is a poor bet unless you can eliminate at least two options.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Tradesman candidates: Each section is worth 25 marks, so a weak section can cost you far more than a strong one can add. Keep all four sections above the same level.

  • Physical stage is a gate, not a score: You cannot compensate for a failed race with written marks. Train for the PET first, then fit the written practice around it.

  • GD candidates: With 80 questions in 60 minutes, you have under 45 seconds per question. Practise sectional timing.

  • SI candidates: The English-heavy Paper II is reported to carry the largest share of marks. Do not neglect comprehension and grammar.

  • Everyone: The pattern is simple enough that your edge comes from practice volume and error analysis, not from new topics.

How Final Selection Works

The notification summaries we reviewed do not state a marks weightage for each Tradesman stage, so we are not publishing one. What is clear is the sequence: the physical stages qualify you, the written exam decides who goes forward to the trade test and document verification, and the medical examination confirms fitness. Read the merit clause in the official notification to see how the final list is prepared and how ties are broken.

For SSC-based routes, SSC publishes the merit method in its notice. The written marks usually carry the weight, while physical and medical stages are qualifying.

Worked example: marks in the SSC GD paper

Suppose you attempt 70 questions in the 80-question SSC GD paper, getting 60 right and 10 wrong. Your score is shown below.

Item

Calculation

Marks

Correct answers

60 x 2

120

Wrong answers

10 x 0.25

minus 2.5

Unattempted

10 questions

0

Final score

120 minus 2.5

117.5 out of 160

The same attempt in the Tradesman paper would give 60 marks out of 100, because each question carries one mark and no deduction has been reported. Use such calculations on your own mock scores to see how much an extra ten attempts is really worth. The section-wise analysis after each Testkart test gives you the attempts and accuracy you need for this.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

For the 2-hour Tradesman paper, divide time roughly as 30 minutes per section, and keep five to ten minutes at the end for review. Start with the section you are most confident in, usually mathematics or reasoning, and finish general awareness last if you tend to lose time deciding between options.

For timed practice in these patterns, you can attempt BSF mock tests on Testkart and review the section-wise analysis to see where your minutes go. Keep a notebook of mistakes by section, and revisit it before every new test. Take at least four full-length timed papers in the final month, and pair them with BSF study notes for revision between tests.
