BSSC CGL Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains and Marking Scheme

The BSSC CGL exam pattern has two written stages: an objective preliminary exam of 600 marks and a Main exam with two papers worth 400 and 600 marks. Prelims is used only for shortlisting. Your rank is decided by Main exam Paper 2, after you clear the Hindi language paper. This page follows the scheme of the 4th Graduate Level Combined Competitive Examination under Advertisement No. 05/25.

The pattern matters because of how the marks work. Every question carries 4 marks and a wrong answer costs 1, so the way you use 2 hours 15 minutes decides your score as much as your preparation does. Below you will find each paper in a table, the marking rules, what they mean for your strategy, and a section-wise time plan.

How Prelims Shortlisting Works

  • Screening only: Prelims marks are used to call candidates for the Main exam and are not added to the final score.

  • Category-wise shortlist: The commission shortlists a multiple of the vacancies in each category for the Main exam, as set out in the advertisement. The prelims cut-off is the score of the last candidate who makes this list.

  • Qualifying marks still apply: You must also reach the minimum qualifying marks for your category, covered later on this page.

BSSC CGL Mains Exam Pattern

The Main exam has two objective papers. Both are held under the same exam notice, usually on the same day in separate shifts.

Paper 1: Hindi Language

Paper 1 is qualifying. You need at least 30% (120 out of 400) for your Paper 2 answer sheet to be evaluated. Paper 1 marks do not count towards your rank. The paper tests grammar, vocabulary, usage and comprehension in Hindi.

Paper 2: General Studies, Science and Mathematics, Reasoning

Paper 2 has the same three subject areas as prelims, with 50 questions each. The questions are a level deeper, especially in mathematics and reasoning, where you can expect multi-step problems, puzzles and arrangements. This is the paper that decides your place in the merit list.

The deduction of 1 mark for each wrong answer applies to the preliminary exam under the advertisement. Most published summaries show the same marking for the Main exam papers. Confirm the marking line in the instructions printed on your admit card for each stage, because the commission can specify it in the exam notice.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Every section is worth the same: Each section carries 200 marks, so a weak section hurts as much as a strong one helps. Do not build your plan around only one subject.

  • A wrong guess costs a quarter of a right answer: If you guess 20 questions blindly, you may get about 5 right (plus 20 marks) and 15 wrong (minus 15 marks). The net gain is close to zero, and a bad run makes it negative.

  • Educated guesses are different: If you can remove two of the four options, the odds turn in your favour. Attempt those and skip the rest.

  • Prelims rewards breadth, Mains rewards depth: Prelims is about getting enough marks to make the shortlist. Paper 2 is about outscoring others, so practise harder sets once prelims is over.

  • The Hindi paper is a trap for some: Candidates who studied in English often ignore Paper 1 until the end. Falling below 30% means your Paper 2 is not even checked.

Minimum Qualifying Marks

The advertisement sets category-wise minimum qualifying marks for the merit list. These are floors. The actual cut-off is usually higher because it depends on the number of posts and candidates.

How the Final Merit Is Prepared

  1. Clear prelims: Make the category-wise shortlist for the Main exam.

  2. Clear Hindi Paper 1: Score at least 30% so that Paper 2 is evaluated.

  3. Score in Paper 2: Your Paper 2 marks, out of 600, form the merit score, subject to the category-wise minimum qualifying marks.

  4. Contractual weightage, if eligible: Under the corrigendum of September 2025, eligible contractual employees on the same post can get up to 5 marks for each year of satisfactory service, capped at 25 marks.

  5. Post allotment: Posts are allotted on merit, category and the preference you gave in your application.

A Worked Example

Suppose you attempt 125 questions in Paper 2, with 105 correct and 20 wrong. Your score is 105 times 4, which is 420, minus 20 for the wrong answers, giving 400 out of 600. That is about 66.7%, well above the 40% minimum for the unreserved category. Whether 400 is enough for a post depends on that cycle's cut-off for your category and post.

Now suppose you had guessed blindly on the 20 questions instead of attempting them carefully, and got only 5 right. You would gain 20 marks and lose 15, a net of just 5 marks for 20 attempts. Careful selection is worth more than volume.

Prelims vs Mains: Key Differences

The two stages look similar on paper, but they ask for different things from you. Knowing the difference helps you change gears after prelims instead of repeating the same routine.

Exam Mode and Language

The advertisement describes the papers as objective multiple-choice tests. Whether a stage is held on OMR sheets or as a computer-based test is confirmed in the exam notice and admit card for that stage, so check the instructions before exam day. Paper 1 is set in Hindi. For the other papers, check the question paper language stated in the exam notice and admit card.

Document Verification

Candidates who are provisionally selected after the Main exam are called for document verification. Keep originals and self-attested copies of the following ready:

  • Educational certificates: Graduation marksheets and degree, plus PGDCA, BCA or B.Sc (IT) certificates for the Data Entry Operator post where applicable.

  • Category and residence: Caste certificate, non-creamy layer certificate where required, EWS certificate and Bihar residence certificate.

  • Special categories: Disability certificate, ex-serviceman documents, or contractual experience certificate in the prescribed format.

  • Identity and admit cards: A photo ID and the admit cards of both stages.

Exam-day Tips

  • Start with your strongest section: Early correct answers settle nerves and save time for harder sections.

  • Use two rounds: In round one, answer everything you can solve quickly. In round two, return to questions you marked.

  • Set a cut-off time per maths question: If a question has taken more than two minutes, mark it and move on.

  • Read the admit card instructions: The mode of the exam (pen and paper or computer-based), reporting time and marking rules are confirmed there.

The best way to fix your own time split is to test it under real conditions. Common Pattern Mistakes on Other Pages

  • Old vacancy numbers: Some pages still show 1,481 or 1,541 posts. The revised total after the November 2025 corrigendum is 1,883.

  • Hindi counted in merit: Paper 1 is qualifying only. It does not add to your rank.

  • Practice quiz formats shown as the exam: Short quizzes of 20 questions in 12 minutes on some sites are practice sets, not the official pattern.

  • Interview listed as a stage: There is no interview for the posts in Advertisement No. 05/25.

Older pages may still show outdated details, so follow the official advertisement and any later notice. All notices for this cycle are posted on the BSSC notice board.
