CBSE Class 12 Cut Off 2027: Passing and Admission Marks

Students often search for the CBSE Class 12 cut off 2027 expecting a single number, as they would for a recruitment exam. The board exam works differently. CBSE does not set a rank-based cut off for Class 12. It sets pass marks, and separate cut offs appear only later, when colleges and universities fill their seats.

Is There a CBSE Class 12 Cut Off?

No. CBSE does not release a merit list, rank or qualifying cut off for the Class 12 board exam. You either meet the passing criteria in each subject or you appear for the supplementary exam. As of 30 September 2026, CBSE has not announced any change to these criteria for the 2026-27 session.

CBSE Class 12 Passing Marks

CBSE's Scheme of Examinations and Pass Criteria requires 33% in each subject. Where a subject has a practical, you need 33% in theory, 33% in practical and 33% in aggregate.

Subject format

Theory minimum (indicative)

Practical or internal minimum (indicative)

80 theory + 20 internal or practical

26 out of 80

7 out of 20

70 theory + 30 practical

23 out of 70

10 out of 30

These minimums are our calculation at 33%, rounded to the nearest mark, and are not an official table. Confirm the wording in the CBSE Examination Bye-laws.

Grades and Percentage

CBSE awards grades from A1 to D2 on a nine-point scale, based on rank among passed candidates, and E means essential repeat. It does not publish an aggregate percentage on the marksheet, so any percentage you quote for admissions is calculated from your subject marks.

Cut Offs That Matter After Class 12

The cut offs students usually mean are set by colleges, not CBSE.

  • Merit-based admission: Some universities admit students on Class 12 marks, usually in the best four or five subjects. Each institution sets its own cut off, and it changes every year.

  • Entrance-based admission: Other universities admit on an entrance test score. Your board marks then only need to meet the minimum eligibility the institution lists.

  • Professional courses: Engineering, medical and similar courses usually set their own minimum board marks in specific subjects.

Because these figures differ by course and by year, check the official admission notice of each university you are targeting. Previous-year cut offs are a guide, not a promise.

How to Aim Above the Cut Off

  • Secure the pass first: Do not let a weak practical or internal score put a subject at risk. Keep your record file and project current.

  • Build a scoring buffer: The pass mark is a floor, so plan your preparation around the marks your target course expects.

  • Practise the pattern: Read the CBSE Class 12 exam pattern and attempt timed tests under exam conditions.
