CISF ASI Syllabus: Subject-Wise Topics and Study Checklist

The CISF ASI syllabus covers four areas in the written test: reasoning, general awareness, mathematics and language. The Stenographer route adds a qualifying skill test in dictation and transcription, and the LDCE route for ASI (Executive) adds professional knowledge to the awareness section. This page turns those headings into a topic checklist you can study and tick off.

CISF names the subjects in its notices but, as far as we could verify, does not publish a topic-by-topic syllabus for ASI. Below, you will find the topics most often attached to these sections, what to start with, and a phase-wise plan. If you are comparing with other CISF posts, remember that Constable and Tradesman papers differ from the ASI paper.

Honesty note on the official syllabus

CISF names the sections of the written test in its notification but does not give a detailed topic list that we could verify. The topic lists on this page are built from those section names and from questions reported from earlier papers. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list, and read the current notice on https://cisfrecruitment.gov.in/ when it is released. The Stenographer paper is described as based on the Class 12 level.

Key changes to know

  • Two papers, one name: Steno is a 100-mark paper; LDCE is a 200-mark paper. Do not mix their preparation plans.

  • Language choice: the Steno paper offers English or Hindi as the language part, so pick the one you will score in.

  • Professional knowledge: LDCE includes this in the awareness section, which is not part of the Steno paper.

  • Older pages: some websites still show a Constable-level syllabus or a Head Constable syllabus under the ASI heading, so check the post name first.

General Intelligence and Reasoning

This section is usually the quickest to score if you practise daily. Questions are short, and most can be solved in under a minute once you know the patterns.

Area

Topics to cover

Start with

Verbal reasoning

Analogies, classification, series, coding-decoding, alphabet tests, ranking and order

Series and coding-decoding

Relationships

Blood relations, syllogisms, statements and conclusions

Blood relations

Spatial reasoning

Direction and distance, Venn diagrams, mirror and water images, embedded figures

Direction and distance

Numerical reasoning

Number puzzles, number series, mathematical operations, data sufficiency

Number series

Direction sense, series and coding-decoding appear almost every year in reasoning papers of this type, so make them your first week. Syllogisms and data sufficiency need more care, because one wrong assumption costs the question.

General Knowledge and Awareness

This is the widest section, and it does not reward last-minute study. The topics come from static GK and current affairs.

Static general knowledge

  • Indian polity: Constitution, fundamental rights and duties, Parliament, President and Governor.

  • History and culture: freedom struggle, important movements, art and culture basics.

  • Geography: Indian rivers, soils, climate, states and capitals, national parks, neighbouring countries.

  • General science: basic physics, chemistry and biology from the Class 8 to Class 10 level, everyday science.

  • Economy: banking terms, budget basics, five-year plans, important commissions.

Current affairs

Cover national and international events of the last 6 to 12 months before the exam: awards, sports, books and authors, appointments, summits, government schemes and defence news. Make one-page monthly notes and revise them each weekend.

Professional knowledge (LDCE)

LDCE pairs awareness with professional knowledge. For serving personnel this covers the working of the force, but CISF has not listed topics in the sources we could access. Use the CISF Act and Rules, the role of the force in industrial and airport security, and your training material, and follow the topic list in the current notice.

Mathematics and Numerical Ability

Questions are at about the Class 10 level and test speed more than depth. Learn tables, squares and common percentage-fraction values, which save the most time.

Block

Topics to cover

Start with

Number work

Number system, LCM and HCF, simplification, square roots, averages

Simplification and averages

Commercial maths

Percentages, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, discount

Percentages

Time based

Time and work, time and distance, pipes and cisterns, boats and streams

Time and work

Geometry and mensuration

Areas and volumes of common figures, basic geometry and triangles

Area and perimeter

Data handling

Tables, bar graphs, line graphs, basic trigonometry in some reported lists

Tables and bar graphs

Percentages sit underneath profit and loss, interest, ratio and data questions. If you master percentages and ratios first, a large part of the paper becomes easier.

English and Hindi

The Steno paper offers English or Hindi, while LDCE tests English comprehension and communication. Choose your language based on your accuracy, not your comfort alone.

English

  • Grammar: tenses, articles, prepositions, voice, narration, subject-verb agreement.

  • Error spotting and sentence improvement: find the faulty part or pick the better version.

  • Vocabulary: synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms, prefixes and suffixes.

  • Comprehension: reading passages with short factual questions, and cloze tests.

Hindi

  • Grammar: gender, number, tense, voice, karak, pronouns and verbs.

  • Vocabulary: synonyms, antonyms, idioms and proverbs, one-word substitution.

  • Literature basics: alankar and well-known poets, as reported by exam-preparation sources.

Professional knowledge for LDCE

For ASI (Executive), the awareness section is named General Awareness and Professional Knowledge. The professional portion tests what a serving member should know about the force and its work. Because no topic list is available to us, build your notes from the notice, service rules circulated by your unit and training manuals, and treat anything beyond that with caution.

Skill test syllabus for Stenographer

The ASI (Stenographer) skill test is qualifying and does not add to merit, but failing it ends your chances. The last reported requirements are below.

Skill

Requirement reported

Dictation

10 minutes at 80 words per minute

Transcription, English

50 minutes on a computer

Transcription, Hindi

65 minutes on a computer

Practise shorthand outlines and typing together. Transcribing your own dictation is the closest preparation to the real test.

How to cover the syllabus

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: learn concepts in maths and reasoning, and start reading current affairs for 30 minutes a day.

  2. Weeks 5 to 8: add static GK, grammar and vocabulary, and take topic-wise tests at the end of each topic.

  3. Weeks 9 to 12: take sectional tests of 20 to 25 minutes. Testkart topic-wise tests for CISF ASI can be used here to see accuracy by topic.

  4. Final phase: take full-length mocks in the exam pattern, review every wrong answer on the same day, and keep an error log.

For Stenographer candidates, add 45 minutes of shorthand and typing practice daily from week 1. Physical preparation should begin in parallel, because the physical tests come after the written stage.
