COMEDK UGET Eligibility 2027: Marks, Age, Subjects

COMEDK UGET eligibility decides two things: whether you can sit the exam and whether your rank will be accepted at counselling. The rules are set by COMEDK in its information brochure each year and cover nationality, the qualifying exam, subject combination, minimum marks, age and, for some benefits, Karnataka domicile.

This guide explains each condition for B.E. and B.Tech admission as stated in the official 2026 brochure, with examples of who qualifies and who does not. The 2027 brochure has not been released yet. These rules have stayed broadly stable in recent cycles, but check the new brochure before you apply, because the final word is always the latest official document.

Nationality

COMEDK UGET is a national-level exam. Students from any Indian state can apply and compete for the same seats. Three groups are eligible:

  • Indian citizens: Eligible without any extra declaration.

  • Overseas Citizens of India (OCI): Eligible, but must submit the declaration given in the annexure of the information brochure.

  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIO): Eligible on the same condition as OCI candidates.

Foreign nationals who do not hold OCI or PIO status are not covered by the COMEDK UGET eligibility rules for B.E. and B.Tech.

Educational Qualification

The academic rules have three parts: the exam you passed, the subjects you studied and the board you studied under.

Qualifying exam

You must have passed 2nd PUC (the Karnataka pre-university course), Class 12 or an equivalent exam recognised by a state or central board.

Subject combination

In the last two years of your qualifying course, Physics, Mathematics and English must be compulsory subjects. Along with these, you must have studied one of the following as an optional subject:

  • Chemistry

  • Biotechnology

  • Biology

  • Computer Science

  • Electronics

Note that the minimum-marks rule (next section) is calculated on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. If your optional subject is not Chemistry, read the brochure note on how your aggregate is worked out, and confirm with the COMEDK helpdesk if you are unsure.

Passing each subject

Passing the overall exam is not enough. You must pass each subject individually, including the optional subject. A candidate who has the required aggregate but failed one subject does not meet the rule.

Single-board rule

All subjects must be passed from one board. COMEDK does not accept a combination of marks cards from different boards. The brochure gives a clear example: a candidate who passed Physics and Chemistry through CBSE but Mathematics through NIOS is not eligible.

Candidates appearing in Class 12

Students in the final year of Class 12 apply in the same cycle and mark their academic status in the form. The marks rule is checked at counselling, where you must show the original 2nd PUC or Class 12 marks card. If your final marks fall below the requirement, you will not be eligible for admission through your rank.

Minimum Marks and Category Relaxation

Category

Minimum aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

General Merit (all candidates)

45%

SC, ST and OBC candidates of Karnataka

40%

The lower 40% requirement applies only to SC, ST and OBC candidates who belong to Karnataka. SC, ST or OBC candidates from other states need 45%, like all other candidates.

How to check your aggregate

Add your marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, divide by the total maximum marks of the three subjects and multiply by 100. For example, if each subject is out of 100 and you scored 52, 41 and 46, your total is 139 out of 300, which is about 46.3%. That meets the 45% General Merit rule, provided you passed each subject.

Certificate timing matters

If you are a Karnataka SC, ST or OBC candidate whose aggregate falls between 40% and 45%, your eligibility depends on a valid category certificate. The brochure requires such certificates to be uploaded before you submit the application form. If the certificate is missing or invalid, the rank becomes invalid and you cannot take part in counselling.

Who Counts as a Karnataka Candidate

You do not need to be from Karnataka to take COMEDK UGET. Karnataka status matters only for two benefits: the lower marks requirement for Karnataka SC, ST and OBC candidates, and seats reserved for the Kalyana Karnataka Region (KKR).

As per the 2026 brochure, a candidate is treated as a Karnataka candidate if either condition is met:

  1. Study in Karnataka: The candidate is an Indian citizen belonging to Karnataka by birth or domicile, has studied for at least seven academic years in Karnataka between Class 1 and 2nd PUC or Class 12 (counted as on 1 July of the exam year), and has passed both the SSLC or Class 10 and the 2nd PUC or Class 12 exams from Karnataka.

  2. Karnataka origin with parent's study: The candidate is of Karnataka origin, has passed both 1st and 2nd PUC in Karnataka, and one parent has studied in a Karnataka institution for seven years.

A Karnataka domicile certificate is needed to claim these benefits, and it must also be uploaded with the application. Read the exact wording in the latest brochure, since small details such as the counting date can change between cycles.

Age Limit

COMEDK does not print a fixed upper age limit for B.E. and B.Tech. The brochure says age eligibility follows AICTE and VTU norms. In practice:

  • No published upper limit: Students who passed Class 12 in earlier years are not barred by age alone, as long as they meet the academic rules.

  • Below 17 years: Candidates who are below 17 years of age as on 1 January of the admission year must submit a declaration, as asked in the application and at counselling.

  • Year of passing: Any limit on the number of years since passing the qualifying exam also follows AICTE and VTU norms. If you passed Class 12 several years ago, check with the COMEDK helpdesk before applying.

There is no published limit on the number of times you can take COMEDK UGET. Each year is a fresh application with a fresh fee.

Who Is Not Eligible

These are the most common reasons a candidate does not qualify for B.E. or B.Tech admission through COMEDK.

  • Diploma holders: COMEDK has no lateral entry for B.E. and B.Tech, so a diploma does not make you eligible for this exam route.

  • Missing compulsory subject: Not having Physics, Mathematics or English as compulsory subjects in the last two years.

  • Below the minimum aggregate: Less than 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (or less than 40% for Karnataka SC, ST and OBC candidates with valid certificates).

  • Failed in a subject: Not passing every subject individually, including the optional subject.

  • Mixed boards: Combining marks cards from two boards, such as CBSE for some subjects and NIOS for others.

  • Late certificates: Claiming the 40% rule or KKR seats without uploading valid certificates before submitting the form.

  • Zero score in the test: Candidates who score zero are not ranked and cannot use the exam for admission.

Architecture Courses

The COMEDK UGET application form is only for B.E. and B.Tech. COMEDK does not hold a separate entrance test for B.Arch. For B.Arch admission through COMEDK counselling, the process uses scores from national architecture tests such as NATA or JEE as specified for that year, and the eligibility rules are different.

Diploma holders who are not eligible for B.E. may still be eligible for some architecture courses, as noted in the brochure. If you are interested in these courses, read the separate architecture notification and counselling document on the official website.

Eligibility Checks at Counselling

Meeting the rules when you apply is only half the job. COMEDK checks eligibility again before allotting a seat.

  • Original marks card: You must produce the original 2nd PUC or Class 12 marks card at counselling.

  • Certificate validity: Category, domicile and KKR certificates are verified. An invalid certificate cancels the benefit, and for the 40% group it cancels the rank for counselling.

  • Age declaration: Candidates below 17 years as on 1 January of the admission year submit the declaration.

  • Counselling registration: A separate counselling registration fee applies (Rs. 2,000, non-refundable, in 2026).

Quick Eligibility Self-Check

Answer each question honestly. If any answer is "no", read the related section again or contact the COMEDK helpdesk before paying the fee.

  1. Am I an Indian citizen, OCI or PIO?

  2. Did I study Physics, Mathematics and English as compulsory subjects in Class 11 and 12 (or 1st and 2nd PUC)?

  3. Did I study Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Computer Science or Electronics as my optional subject?

  4. Are all my Class 12 subjects from one board?

  5. Do I have, or expect, at least 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (40% if I am a Karnataka SC, ST or OBC candidate)?

  6. Have I passed, or will I pass, every subject individually?

  7. If I am claiming any Karnataka benefit, do I have the certificates ready to upload before I submit the form?

If all seven answers are "yes", you can apply with confidence. Many eligible students then start timed practice early.
