DNB CET 2027

The DNB CET is the national entrance test that doctors with a postgraduate diploma take to move into a DNB broad specialty course. In NBEMS notices it appears as the Post Diploma Centralized Entrance Test, or DNB-PDCET, and it is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). This guide explains the DNB CET exam for the 2027 admission cycle in plain terms: who can sit it, how the paper is built, what to study and how to prepare.

Scope note: this page covers the NBEMS post-diploma entrance (DNB-PDCET). It is not the entrance for MBBS graduates, who apply for DNB broad specialty seats through NEET PG. As of 23 October 2026, NBEMS has not published the 2027 information bulletin, so every date, fee and deadline below is taken from the 2026 cycle and clearly labelled. What Is the DNB CET and Who Takes It

A doctor who has finished MBBS and then completed a postgraduate diploma, for example a DGO, DCH, DA or DLO, can use this test to enter a three-year DNB broad specialty programme in the same field. The test is therefore a lateral step up, not a first-time admission test.

The paper is specific to your diploma specialty. A candidate with a diploma in anaesthesia sits an anaesthesiology paper, and a candidate with a diploma in child health sits a paediatrics paper. That is why preparation for this exam looks different from a general medical entrance exam.

Three kinds of readers usually land on this page:

  • Diploma holders: Doctors who already have a result and want to know the 2027 route.

  • Final-year diploma students: Candidates whose result will be declared close to the bulletin cut-off date and who must check timing carefully.

  • Doctors comparing options: Those weighing a DNB seat against a university MD or MS route.

Notification and Important Dates

NBEMS releases the information bulletin and opens online registration together. In the 2026 cycle the official notice was issued on 17 February 2026, and the applicant portal was reached through the DNB-PDCET section on the NBEMS website. The 2027 schedule is not out yet.

Tentative dates come from the previous cycle and can change. Track the DNB-PDCET section on the NBEMS website and your registered email. Because the last cycle ran from February to April, a similar window is plausible for 2027, but that is only a planning assumption.

Eligibility Summary

The full rules are on the DNB CET eligibility page. In short, based on the official 2022 bulletin and 2026 reporting:

  • Qualification: A PG diploma passed from an Indian university, recognised under the NMC Act, in a specialty on the NBEMS list.

  • Result deadline: The diploma result must be declared on or before the cut-off date printed in the bulletin. The date changes every cycle.

  • Registration: A valid NMC or State Medical Council registration is needed.

  • Current trainees: Candidates pursuing an MD, MS or DNB course are not eligible until they complete or are discharged from it.

  • Age: The 2022 bulletin does not set an age limit.

Application Fee and How to Apply

The application is fully online. The fee is paid online and is non-refundable. The figure depends on the cycle.

Steps to apply

  1. Open the NBEMS website and go to the DNB-PDCET section once the bulletin is live.

  2. Read the information bulletin fully, especially the eligibility and specialty list.

  3. Register with a valid mobile number and email address.

  4. Fill in personal, diploma and registration details.

  5. Upload the photograph, signature and left thumb impression, and the diploma and recognition proofs, in the specified formats and sizes.

Reports for 2026 mention image limits of 80 KB for the photo, signature and thumb impression, and 300 KB PDFs for diploma proofs. Treat these as indicative and follow the current bulletin.

DNB CET Exam Pattern

The test is a single computer-based paper of 120 single-best-answer multiple-choice questions drawn from your diploma specialty. Each correct answer earns 4 marks, each wrong answer costs 1 mark, and unattempted questions carry no mark, so the maximum score is 480.

DNB CET Syllabus Summary

NBEMS states that questions cover the entire curriculum relevant to your diploma specialty at the post-diploma exit level. It does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. That means the practical syllabus is the postgraduate diploma curriculum of your own specialty, supported by standard textbooks and the clinical knowledge you use daily.

Specialty (prior diploma)

Core areas to expect

Anaesthesiology (DA)

Pharmacology, airway, regional and general anaesthesia, monitoring, critical care

Obstetrics and Gynaecology (DGO)

Antenatal care, labour, complications, gynaecological disorders, contraception

Paediatrics (DCH)

Growth, neonatology, infections, nutrition, immunisation, emergencies

Otorhinolaryngology (DLO)

Ear, nose and throat diseases, head and neck, audiology, surgical anatomy

Other listed specialties

Relevant diploma curriculum, covered on the syllabus page

This is an indicative grid, not an official list. The DNB CET syllabus page expands it across the specialties.

Selection Process and Counselling

Selection follows a simple chain.

  1. Entrance test: You appear in the computer-based paper for your specialty.

  2. Merit list: NBEMS prepares a separate merit list for each broad specialty. Ties are broken first by more correct answers, then by fewer wrong answers, then by older age, according to the 2022 bulletin.

  3. Counselling: NBEMS conducts centralised merit-cum-choice counselling. You register, pay the counselling fee, fill in course and hospital choices and receive an allotment.

  4. Reporting: You report to the allotted hospital with original documents.

Re-evaluation, rechecking and re-totalling are not allowed according to the 2022 bulletin. Reservation rules for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwD candidates are applied as per the bulletin and institution norms, and category certificates must be ready before counselling. A counselling fee of Rs. 2,500 has been reported for the latest cycle; confirm it on the NBEMS website.

The 2022 official bulletin lists 14 specialties with their qualifying diplomas.

The list can change between cycles, so confirm the current annexure in the 2027 bulletin. Seat numbers are published by NBEMS and shift every year; one reported figure for the 2026 cycle is roughly 1,073 seats across about 597 accredited hospitals, which should be treated as indicative only.

How to Prepare for the DNB CET

Most candidates are working doctors, so the plan has to fit around duty hours. Think in phases rather than hours per day.

Phase 1: Map your specialty

Take your diploma curriculum and list every subject. Mark each topic as strong, average or weak. Be honest, because the paper rewards breadth.

Phase 2: Rebuild the core

Revise from one standard textbook per subject and your own diploma notes. Add recent guideline updates in your field, since clinical questions often test current protocols.

Phase 3: Practise in exam format

Start with topic-wise questions, then move to full 120-question sets under timed conditions. Practising on a computer matters because the real test is computer-based.

Phase 4: Analyse and revise

Keep an error log with three columns: concept gap, careless mistake and guess. Revise the log every week. In the final weeks, reduce new reading and repeat full-length sets.

Because every wrong answer costs a quarter of a correct one, build a rule for guessing. Attempt a question when you can eliminate at least two options with reasoning, and leave it when you are at pure chance.

Cut Off and Merit Benchmark

NBEMS does not announce a fixed qualifying score for this test. It ranks candidates within each specialty, and counselling decides who gets a seat. The effective benchmark is the rank at which seats in your specialty and preferred hospitals close, and that varies by year, specialty and location. Read the DNB CET cut off guide for the full explanation.

Mock Tests and Practice

Because the paper is entirely multiple-choice and strictly timed, practising in the same format is the closest thing to a rehearsal. NBEMS has offered a demo test on its website in earlier cycles to help candidates learn the interface, which is worth using on the first day it appears.
