DRDO RCI Apprentice Eligibility 2026: Criteria Guide
DRDO RCI Apprentice eligibility is narrower than it first looks. Research Centre Imarat (RCI), the DRDO laboratory in Hyderabad, has opened 195 one-year apprenticeship seats under Advertisement No. RCI/HRD/Apprenticeship/Advt/2027, released on 1 October 2026. The seats are for B.E./B.Tech graduates, diploma holders and ITI pass-outs, but only for named branches and trades, only with 70% or a 7.5 CGPA, and only for freshers who passed between 2022 and 2026.
Many applications fail on small eligibility details rather than low marks: a branch that is not on the list, a higher degree, a past apprenticeship contract, or a passing year just outside the window. This page goes through every condition in the official notice, shows who cannot apply, works through real-life examples, and explains what changed from last year's RCI notice.

Educational Qualification by Category
Each category has its own list of branches or trades. The notice names them exactly, so check that your branch appears in the list for the category you plan to apply in.
Graduate Apprentice: B.E. or B.Tech
You need a B.E. or B.Tech in one of these 11 disciplines:
Electronics and electrical: Electronics and Communication (ECE), Electrical and Electronics (EEE) and Instrumentation Engineering.
Computing: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).
Core and process: Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgical and Civil Engineering.
Specialised: Safety, Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering.
Technician Apprentice: Diploma
You need a diploma in one of eight disciplines: ECE, Instrumentation, EEE, CSE, Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgical or Safety Engineering. Aeronautical, Aerospace and Civil are open only at the graduate level this cycle, so a diploma holder in those fields is not covered by the technician list.
Trade Apprentice: ITI
You need an ITI pass certificate affiliated to NCVT or SCVT in one of these trades:
Trade group | Eligible trades |
|---|---|
Machining and fabrication | Fitter, Turner, Machinist, Grinder, Welder |
Electrical and electronics | Electrician, Electronic Mechanic |
Automobile | Mechanic Diesel |
Computer and drawing | COPA (Computer Operator and Programming Assistant), Draughtsman (Mechanical) |
What If Your Branch Is Not Listed?
Many institutes use their own branch names, such as Electronics and Instrumentation, Mechatronics, Information Technology or Production Engineering. The notice does not mention equivalent branches, and document verification rejects any deviation from the required qualification. If your degree title does not match a listed branch exactly, write to RCI at [email protected] for clarification before applying, rather than assuming it will be accepted.
Minimum Marks: 70% or 7.5 CGPA
The notice says only regular candidates who secured 70% or a CGPA of 7.5 and above in the qualifying examination are eligible. This applies to all three categories, and the advertisement does not mention a lower minimum for any reserved category.
Use your final aggregate: The figure that counts is the overall percentage or CGPA on your final or consolidated mark sheet, not a single semester or year.
No rounding is mentioned: The rule says "70% and above". A score of 69.8% is below the requirement as written, so do not assume it will be rounded up.
Either form is accepted: If your university awards CGPA, a 7.5 or higher meets the rule on its own. The notice gives no conversion formula, so keep your university's official conversion method or certificate in case RCI asks for it.
Clearing 70% makes you eligible, but shortlisting is done on academic merit among all eligible applicants. How far above the minimum you may need to be is discussed on the DRDO RCI Apprentice cut-off page.
Passing Year: 2022 to 2026
Your qualifying course must have been completed in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026. This window is fixed in the notice, and there is no exception for high marks.
Year of passing | Eligible? | Note |
|---|---|---|
2021 or earlier | No | Outside the window, however good the marks |
2022 to 2025 | Yes | Provided you meet the fresher conditions below |
2026, result declared | Yes | Provisional certificate is listed as an accepted document |
2026, result awaited | Not clear | The notice asks for candidates who have secured the marks, so do not assume eligibility before your result is out |
Candidates who passed in 2022 or 2023 should check the work-experience rule carefully, because a few years after graduation many people have already worked for more than a year.
Age Limit
You must be at least 18 years old as on 1 September 2026. In practice, your date of birth should fall on or before 1 September 2008.
The advertisement does not print an upper age limit, so there is no category-wise age relaxation to apply. Some pages show an "age relaxation" table for this recruitment, but with no maximum age in the notice, such a table has nothing to relax. The passing-year window and the fresher conditions are what keep the applicant pool young.
Nationality, Regular Mode and Recognised Institutions
Indian nationals: The notice invites applications from Indian nationals. It does not mention any state domicile condition, so candidates from any state can apply, although training is only at Hyderabad.
Indian, recognised institutions: All qualifications must be from Indian institutions recognised by the appropriate statutory authority.
Regular mode only: The eligibility clause covers regular candidates only. A degree, diploma or ITI earned through distance, correspondence or other non-regular modes does not meet the condition.
Who Is Not Eligible
These three conditions catch out many candidates who otherwise have strong marks. The notice also says that suppression of facts leads to disqualification at any stage, even during the apprenticeship, so hiding any of them is not an option.
Candidates With a Higher Qualification
Candidates with a higher qualification are not eligible. In practical terms, you must apply in the category that matches your highest technical qualification.
Highest qualification you hold | Can apply as Graduate? | Can apply as Technician? | Can apply as Trade? |
|---|---|---|---|
ITI only | No | No | Yes |
ITI and diploma | No | Yes | No |
Diploma and B.E./B.Tech | Yes | No | No |
M.E. or M.Tech | No | No | No |
RCI's 2023-24 notice barred only postgraduates. The current wording, "higher qualification", is broader, which is why a diploma holder who later completed a B.Tech cannot fall back on the technician seats.
Past or Ongoing Apprentices
Anyone who has already completed apprenticeship training, or is undergoing it now with any organisation, cannot apply. Apprenticeship contracts are recorded on the NATS and Apprenticeship India portals, so an earlier contract is likely to show up at verification.
More Than One Year of Work Experience
Candidates with more than one year of work experience are not eligible. Up to one year is allowed. If you are close to the limit, count your experience carefully from your joining and relieving dates before applying.
Reservation, Medical Fitness and Police Verification
Reservation for SC, ST, OBC, PwD and EWS candidates applies as per the Apprentices Act, 1961, the Apprentice Rules, 1992 and the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Rules, 2019 and 2025. The advertisement does not print a category-wise seat split, so carry a valid caste, PwD or EWS certificate if you claim reservation.
Two more conditions apply after selection. You need a medical fitness certificate from a Government Civil Assistant Surgeon, and at joining you must produce a police verification certificate from your place of last residence (for at least the past one year) or your permanent address. An Aadhaar-seeded bank account is also mandatory for graduate and technician apprentices, because half their stipend is paid through Direct Benefit Transfer.
Documents That Prove Your Eligibility
Every condition above is checked against a document at verification, before your apprenticeship contract is created. Collect these early, because a missing or mismatched paper is treated the same way as not meeting the rule.
Condition | Document RCI asks for |
|---|---|
Qualification and branch or trade | Degree, diploma or ITI certificate (original or provisional) |
70% or 7.5 CGPA and passing year | Consolidated or final mark sheet of the qualifying exam |
Age | Class 10 mark sheet and certificate |
Identity | Aadhaar card (mandatory) and a government photo ID such as PAN, Voter ID or Driving Licence |
Reserved category | Caste, PwD or EWS certificate, if applicable |
Portal registration | NATS or Apprenticeship India profile printout and the filled application form |
Make sure your name and date of birth are spelled the same way on every document and on your portal profile.
Eligibility Check: Worked Examples
The profiles below show how the rules combine. They are illustrations based on the notice, not official rulings.
Candidate profile | Eligible? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
B.Tech ECE, 2025, 76%, no work experience | Yes, Graduate | Listed branch, marks and year within limits |
B.E. Civil, 2024, CGPA 7.6, worked 8 months | Yes, Graduate | Civil is listed this cycle; experience under one year |
Diploma Mechanical, 2023, 82%, now in B.Tech second year | Likely, Technician | No higher qualification completed yet; confirm with RCI first |
ITI Electrician, 2022, 88%, completed one-year apprenticeship at a PSU | No | Past apprenticeship training disqualifies |
B.Tech CSE, 2021, 85% | No | Passed before 2022 |
Diploma Civil, 2025, 79% | No | Civil is listed for graduates only, not diplomas |
ITI COPA, 2026, 69.5% | No | Below 70% |
B.Tech Mechanical, 2023, 74%, two years in a private firm | No | More than one year of work experience |
The third example is a grey area. The notice bars "higher qualification" without saying whether an incomplete course counts. If you are midway through a higher course, ask RCI before applying.
What Changed From the Previous RCI Notice
If you checked RCI's 2025-26 notice last year, several rules are different now.
Condition | 2025-26 notice | Current notice (Advt/2027) |
|---|---|---|
Passing years | 2021 to 2025 | 2022 to 2026 |
Minimum marks | 70% and more | 70% or CGPA 7.5 and above |
Graduate branches | 5 (ECE, EEE, CSE, Mechanical, Chemical) | 11 (adds Instrumentation, Metallurgical, Safety, Aeronautical, Aerospace, Civil) |
Diploma disciplines | 5 | 8 (adds Instrumentation, Metallurgical, Safety) |
ITI trades | Included Electronics and Library Assistant | Both dropped; Grinder added |
Seats (Graduate / Diploma / ITI) | 40 / 20 / 135 | 50 / 30 / 115 |
Older pages may still show the 2025-26 branch list or passing years, so follow the current official RCI advertisement. A 2021 pass-out who was eligible last year is no longer eligible, while Civil, Aeronautical and Aerospace graduates can apply for the first time in recent cycles.
After You Confirm Your Eligibility
Once you meet every condition, apply on the right portal: NATS 2.0 with Enrolment ID STLRAC000010 for graduate and diploma seats, or Apprenticeship India with Establishment ID E05203600040 for ITI seats. Keep your mark sheets, certificates and portal profile consistent, since document verification checks one against the other.
Selection has no written test, so the next step is understanding how shortlisting and the interview work.To revise core subjects before a possible interview, you can attempt discipline-wise online tests on Testkart and use the topic-wise analysis to spot weak areas quickly.
