DRDO RCI Apprentice Exam Pattern 2026: Selection Guide
The DRDO RCI Apprentice exam pattern is different from most recruitment exams you may be used to. Research Centre Imarat (RCI), the DRDO laboratory in Hyderabad that runs this one-year apprenticeship, does not hold a written test for the 2026 recruitment (Advertisement No. RCI/HRD/Apprenticeship/Advt/2027). Its 195 seats for engineering graduates, diploma holders and ITI pass-outs are filled on academic merit, an interview where RCI requires one, and document verification.
That means there are no sections, no question count and no negative marking to plan for. What you do need to understand is how each selection stage works, what decides your place in the merit order, and what can still get you rejected after you are shortlisted. This page explains the full selection pattern stage by stage, compares it with earlier RCI cycles, and shows where your effort makes a real difference.

DRDO RCI Apprentice Exam Pattern 2026 at a Glance
The table below shows every step between submitting your application and starting training. Only the merit and interview stages decide who gets a seat; the rest are checks you must clear.
Stage | What happens | Format | Decides selection? |
|---|---|---|---|
Online application | Apply on NATS 2.0 (graduate, diploma) or Apprenticeship India (ITI) | Online, no fee mentioned in the notice | No, but errors here end your candidature |
Shortlisting | Candidates ranked on marks in the qualifying course | No test; uses existing marks | Yes, main deciding factor |
Interview | Held only where RCI requires it | In person; format not prescribed in the notice | Yes, when held |
Document verification | Originals checked against your profile and the eligibility rules | In person at RCI | Qualifying only; mismatch means rejection |
Joining | Police verification, medical certificate, apprenticeship contract on the portal | Formalities | Qualifying only |
All communication about shortlisting goes to the email ID in your application, so keep that inbox active until the process ends. For seat numbers, dates and the application steps, see the DRDO RCI Apprentice Recruitment 2026 overview.
Is There a Written Exam for DRDO RCI Apprentice?
No. The current notice says selection will be made on the basis of academic merit or interview as required, subject to satisfactory document verification. It does not mention a written test, a computer-based test or a skill test.
This is worth stating clearly because older material still circulates. RCI's apprenticeship notice for 2023-24 listed "Academic Merit / Written Test / Interview as required", so some pages still describe a written test or show a made-up paper with sections and marks. Older pages may still show that version, so follow the current official notice on the DRDO website. RCI also reserves the right to amend the selection process, so check your registered email for any change.
Stage 1: Online Application and Eligibility Screening
Nothing is tested at this stage, but it is where many candidates drop out without realising it. RCI checks applications against the eligibility conditions before anyone is ranked.
Right portal, right ID: Graduate and diploma candidates apply on NATS 2.0 against Enrolment ID STLRAC000010. ITI candidates apply on Apprenticeship India against Establishment ID E05203600040. Registering on a portal without applying to RCI is not an application.
Marks and passing year: You need 70% or a CGPA of 7.5 and above, in a qualifying course passed in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 or 2026, as a regular candidate.
Freshers only: A higher qualification, a completed or ongoing apprenticeship, or more than one year of work experience makes you ineligible.
Age: At least 18 years as on 1 September 2026.
The full rules, with examples of who can and cannot apply, are on the DRDO RCI Apprentice eligibility page.
Stage 2: Shortlisting on Academic Merit
This is the stage that decides most selections. Your score in the B.E./B.Tech, diploma or ITI course is your "exam score" for this recruitment, and it was fixed the day your result came out.
What "Academic Merit" Means Here
Academic merit means your marks in the qualifying examination for the category you applied in. A graduate apprentice is ranked on degree marks, a technician apprentice on diploma marks and a trade apprentice on ITI marks. The notice does not say that Class 10 or Class 12 marks are used for ranking; your Class 10 certificate is asked for only as a document.
The notice also does not publish a tie-break rule or the ratio of candidates shortlisted per seat. If you see such figures elsewhere, treat them as unofficial.
How Percentage and CGPA Candidates Compare
The minimum is written as "70% or CGPA 7.5 and above", and the current notice gives no conversion formula. RCI's 2023-24 notice asked candidates to convert CGPA to percentage as per their university's norms, with the conversion checked at document verification.
What this means for you: keep your university's official conversion rule or a conversion certificate ready, and enter marks in your portal profile exactly as they appear on your mark sheet. A figure you calculated yourself that does not match the university method can create a mismatch at verification.
Category-Wise Competition and Reservation
Seats are listed by apprenticeship category only: 50 graduate, 30 technician and 115 trade seats. The notice does not split them branch-wise or trade-wise, and it does not say whether shortlisting is done separately for each branch. In practice, you compete with other applicants in your own category, not across categories.
Reservation for SC, ST, OBC, PwD and EWS candidates applies as per the Apprentices Act, 1961, the Apprentice Rules, 1992 and the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Rules, 2019 and 2025. No category-wise seat roster is printed in the advertisement, so carry a valid certificate if you claim reservation.
Stage 3: Interview (Where Required)
The notice says an interview will be held "as required". It does not promise one for every seat or every category, and it does not prescribe a format, duration or marks. If RCI calls you, the details will come by email.
Apprenticeship interviews at technical establishments usually check whether you understand the basics of what you studied and can work safely in a lab or workshop. The table below shows the areas worth preparing. It is a preparation guide, not an official scheme.
Category | Likely focus | Prepare especially |
|---|---|---|
Graduate Apprentice | Core subjects of your branch and your final-year project | Explaining your project in two minutes; two or three core subjects linked to it |
Technician Apprentice | Practical understanding of instruments, components and processes | How you would test, measure or troubleshoot something in your discipline |
Trade Apprentice | Trade theory, tools and workshop safety | Names and uses of tools, measuring instruments, common jobs and safety steps |
All categories | Basic awareness and attitude | What DRDO and RCI do, and why you want this apprenticeship |
For branch-wise and trade-wise topic lists, use the DRDO RCI Apprentice syllabus and interview topics page. No TA or DA is paid for attending the interview, and RCI does not provide accommodation, so plan travel and stay in Hyderabad in advance.
Stage 4: Document Verification and Joining
Document verification is a qualifying step, but it is strict. The notice says any deviation from the required qualification leads to rejection, and suppression of facts can lead to disqualification at any stage, including during the apprenticeship.
Check | What is verified | Common reason for rejection |
|---|---|---|
Qualification | Degree, diploma or ITI certificate and final mark sheet | Branch or trade not in the eligible list; non-regular mode |
Marks | 70% or 7.5 CGPA, passing year 2022 to 2026 | Profile marks do not match the mark sheet |
Fresher status | No higher qualification, no past apprenticeship, work experience of one year or less | Hidden higher degree or earlier apprenticeship contract |
Identity and age | Aadhaar, photo ID, Class 10 certificate | Name or date of birth mismatch across documents |
Category | Caste, PwD or EWS certificate | Certificate missing or not valid |
Stipend account | Aadhaar-seeded bank account | Account not seeded with Aadhaar |
Fitness | Medical certificate from a Government Civil Assistant Surgeon | Certificate from an unrecognised issuer |
At joining, you must also produce a police verification certificate from your place of last residence (for at least the past one year) or your permanent address, and sign the apprenticeship contract on the relevant portal. Once training starts, withdrawal is not allowed except for reasons beyond your control.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
There is no marking scheme because there is no paper. No negative marking, no sectional cut-off and no normalisation apply to this recruitment.
The closest thing to a "qualifying mark" is the eligibility floor of 70% or 7.5 CGPA. Clearing it only lets you into the merit list; it does not guarantee a call. How far above it you need to be depends on how many eligible candidates apply in your category.
How the Selection Pattern Has Changed Across Cycles
Comparing RCI's recent notices shows a clear direction: the written test has gone, and the eligibility bar has risen.
Cycle | Seats (Graduate / Diploma / ITI) | Minimum marks | Selection wording in the notice |
|---|---|---|---|
2023-24 | 30 / 30 / 90 (150) | More than 60% | Academic merit / written test / interview as required |
2024-25 | 40 / 40 / 120 (200, as reported) | More than 60% (as reported) | Academic merit / interview as required (as reported) |
2025-26 | 40 / 20 / 135 (195) | 70% and more | Academic merit / interview as required |
2027 (current) | 50 / 30 / 115 (195) | 70% or CGPA 7.5 | Academic merit / interview as required |
The 2023-24, 2025-26 and current figures come from RCI's official notices on the DRDO website. The 2024-25 figures are from published reports of that notice and are included for trend only. The current cycle also widens the graduate list from five branches to eleven, which means more graduates are now competing for 50 seats.
What This Pattern Means for You
Your marks are already counted: With no written test, nothing you study now changes your shortlisting rank. Effort now goes into a clean application and interview readiness.
Errors cost more than low marks: A wrong portal, a mismatched mark entry or an undisclosed apprenticeship can end your candidature even with high marks.
The interview is where you can still gain: If RCI calls you, a clear explanation of your project or trade practicals is the one part of the process you can still improve.
Plan beyond this recruitment: Apprenticeship seats are limited. Many candidates use the same months to prepare for technical exams such as DRDO CEPTAM, SSC JE and PSU recruitment, which do have written papers.
How to Prepare When There Is No Written Test
Before the deadline: Check every eligibility condition, complete your portal profile, and apply against the correct ID. Download the notice and save your application details.
Weeks 1 and 2 after applying: Revise three or four core subjects of your branch or trade and write one page of notes on each. Go through your lab manuals or workshop jobs again.
Week 3: Test yourself on those subjects with short objective quizzes to find weak topics quickly. You can attempt discipline-wise online tests on Testkart and use the topic-wise analysis to decide what to revise again.
Week 4: Practise explaining your project aloud, prepare a short answer on why you want to train at RCI, and arrange your documents in the order of the checklist above.
