Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering CE

GATE CE is a recruitment exam conducted by Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, relevant to engineering graduates targeting technical government and PSU roles.

GATE CE Study Material

GATE CE is the Civil Engineering paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, a national computer-based test conducted jointly by IISc and the IITs on behalf of the Ministry of Education. IIT Madras is the organising institute for GATE 2027. A GATE CE score is used for M.Tech and PhD admissions, for postgraduate scholarships and by several public sector undertakings for recruitment, and it stays valid for three years.

Registration for GATE 2027 has closed, and the exam is scheduled across six days in February 2027. This guide covers the GATE CE 2027 dates, the revised Civil Engineering syllabus, the paper pattern, eligibility, fees, official cut-offs from previous years and a practical preparation plan. The biggest change this cycle is the syllabus: Construction Materials and Management is now a separate section, and several topics were added or removed.

What Is New in GATE CE 2027

  • Revised CE syllabus: Construction Materials and Management moves out of Structural Engineering into its own Section 8, and now includes estimation and costing, construction equipment and types of contracts.

  • Topics added and removed: Transportation Planning (four-step travel demand modelling), GNSS surveying and ground improvement techniques are in; prestressed concrete, plate girders, free vibration of SDOF systems and remote sensing and GIS are out.

  • No international centres: GATE 2027 is held only in India, across 300+ cities.

  • DigiLocker-based registration: Applicants registered through DigiLocker and gave live facial details during the application.

  • New paper in the list: Robotics and Automation (RA) was added, taking GATE 2027 to 30 papers. The CE pattern itself is unchanged.

Older pages may still show the GATE 2026 CE syllabus with seven sections, so follow the revised official syllabus.

The organising institute has rescheduled the registration dates more than once this cycle, and all dates are marked liable to change. Track the official GATE 2027 website and the DigiLocker account you used to apply, because communication goes to that account.

The exact date and session of the CE paper have not been notified yet. In GATE 2026, CE was held on 14 February 2026 in two sessions (CE-1 in the forenoon and CE-2 in the afternoon), as in the previous few cycles. A similar split is likely for 2027 given the number of candidates, but treat it as tentative until the official schedule is out.

Eligibility for GATE CE

Educational qualification

Candidates in the third or higher year of an undergraduate degree, or who have completed a government-approved degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, can appear. For most Civil Engineering aspirants this means a B.E. or B.Tech student in the third year or later, or a graduate. Section A of AMIE or AMICE also qualifies if the course is recognised as equivalent to B.E. or B.Tech.

Age limit

There is no age limit for GATE 2027.

Other conditions

  • Two papers: CE can be paired with AE, AG, AR, ES, GE, NM or XE as a second paper.

  • Admissions are separate: GATE sets who can sit the exam. Each institute or employer sets its own discipline and marks requirements.

Read the full rules on the GATE CE eligibility page.

Two papers cost Rs. 2,000 or Rs. 4,000 in the regular period and Rs. 2,500 or Rs. 4,500 in the extended period, depending on category. The fee is not refundable except when a two-paper combination is withdrawn.

Registration for GATE 2027 has closed. If you applied and received a defect email, fix it in the rectification window ending 31 October 2026; no extra fee is charged for this. Common reasons for defects include a photograph that does not meet the size or background rules, a signature that does not fill the frame, and a missing or unclear category certificate.

The paper lasts 3 hours. Questions carry 1 or 2 marks. MCQs have one correct option out of four and carry negative marking. MSQs can have more than one correct option and carry no negative marking but no partial credit. NAT answers are typed in with a virtual keypad and carry no negative marking. Only the on-screen virtual calculator is allowed.

What this means for you

  • Guess only on MCQs you can narrow down: A wrong 2-mark MCQ costs 2/3 mark, so blind guessing pulls your score down.

  • Attempt every MSQ and NAT you have worked out: There is no penalty for a wrong answer, but MSQs need every correct option and no wrong one.

  • Treat General Aptitude and Mathematics as scoring areas: Together they carry 28 marks, close to the cut-off on their own.

General Aptitude covers verbal, quantitative, analytical and spatial aptitude. The official syllabus gives no section-wise marks, so any weightage table you see elsewhere is an estimate from past papers. The full topic list and the changes from 2026 are on the GATE CE syllabus page.

How the GATE Score Works

  1. Raw marks: Your marks out of 100 after negative marking.

  2. Normalisation: If CE is held in more than one session, raw marks are normalised across sessions using the formula in the information brochure.

  3. Qualifying marks: For the General category, this is the mean plus the standard deviation of all candidates' marks, kept between 25 and 40. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need 90% of that figure, and SC, ST and PwD candidates need two-thirds of it.

  4. GATE score: Marks are converted to a score out of 1000, with the General qualifying mark set at 350 and the mean of the top 0.1% (or top 10) set at 900.

What a GATE CE Score Is Used For

  • M.Tech and direct PhD admissions: IITs, IISc, NITs and other institutes use GATE, often with their own tests or interviews. Ministry of Education guidelines give GATE at least 70% weightage where an institute adds a test or interview.

  • Scholarships: Postgraduate scholarships at centrally funded institutes require a valid GATE qualification.

  • PSU recruitment: Several public sector undertakings shortlist Civil Engineering candidates using GATE scores. Each PSU publishes its own notification, so check those directly.

Qualifying GATE does not by itself guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. Each institute and employer sets its own cut-offs, usually well above the qualifying mark.

These are official qualifying marks out of 100. In GATE 2026, 76,385 candidates appeared for CE and 13,949 qualified. Qualifying marks change every year with the difficulty of the paper and how candidates perform. Treat them as a minimum, not a target, because admission and PSU cut-offs sit well above them. Year-wise detail is on the GATE CE cut-off page.

How to Prepare for GATE CE 2027

Build the core first

Start with the subjects that feed others. Solid mechanics and structural analysis support concrete and steel design, and fluid mechanics supports hydraulics, hydrology and parts of environmental engineering. Geotechnical engineering is large and calculation-heavy, so give it steady weekly time rather than a single block.

Cover the new and changed topics early

Construction Materials and Management, Transportation Planning, GNSS surveying and ground improvement have few or no past GATE questions in their current form. Read the official syllabus line by line and make short notes for these topics before you rely on question banks.

Use previous papers and mocks

The GATE 2027 website hosts official CE question papers and answer keys from earlier years. Solve them topic-wise first, then as full papers. For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt GATE CE online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to plan your revision. Pair them with previous year papers to understand the real difficulty level.

In the last six to eight weeks, take full-length mocks in the same 3-hour slot as your likely session, analyse each one the same day and revise from an error log. Study material such as GATE CE study notes . Keep General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics practice going throughout, because they are the most predictable marks in the paper.
