GATE CE Exam Pattern 2027: Marks, Questions and Marking Scheme
The GATE CE exam pattern 2027 sets out how the Civil Engineering paper of GATE 2027 is built: a single 3-hour computer-based test of 65 questions for 100 marks, with General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and Civil Engineering subjects in one paper. IIT Madras, the organising institute, has kept the pattern the same as GATE 2026.
Knowing the pattern well matters because GATE CE mixes three question types with different marking rules, and only one of them carries a penalty. This page explains the structure, the marking scheme, how multi-session normalisation and the GATE score work, and what all of this means for how you spend your 180 minutes.

Paper Structure and Marks Distribution
Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
General Aptitude | 10 (5 of 1 mark, 5 of 2 marks) | 15 |
Engineering Mathematics | Part of the 55 subject questions | 13 |
Civil Engineering subjects | Part of the 55 subject questions | 72 |
Total | 65 | 100 |
The brochure fixes the General Aptitude split at five 1-mark and five 2-mark questions. For the 55 subject questions to add up to 85 marks, the split works out to 25 questions of 1 mark and 30 of 2 marks. The number of MCQs, MSQs and NATs is not fixed in advance and varies by paper. CE has no optional section, so every candidate answers the same set of subjects.
Question Types: MCQ, MSQ and NAT
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
Four options, exactly one correct. These are the only questions with negative marking.
Multiple Select Questions (MSQ)
Four options, one or more correct. You get marks only if you select every correct option and no wrong one. There is no negative marking and no partial credit.
Numerical Answer Type (NAT)
No options. You type a number, which can be negative or a decimal, using the on-screen keypad. The question states how many decimal places to give, so round off only at the final step. There is no negative marking and no partial credit.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Question type | Correct answer | Wrong answer | Not attempted |
|---|---|---|---|
1-mark MCQ | +1 | -1/3 | 0 |
2-mark MCQ | +2 | -2/3 | 0 |
MSQ (1 or 2 marks) | +1 or +2 | 0 | 0 |
NAT (1 or 2 marks) | +1 or +2 | 0 | 0 |
What the Pattern Means for You
Blind MCQ guesses gain nothing on average: With four options and a one-third penalty, a pure guess has an expected value of zero. If you can rule out even one option, a guess on a 2-mark MCQ has a positive expected value of about 0.22 marks.
Never leave a solved MSQ or NAT blank: There is no penalty, so attempt every one you have a reasoned answer for, even if you are not fully sure.
2-mark questions decide ranks: Around 60 of the 85 subject marks come from 2-mark questions, so practise multi-step numericals in structures, geotechnical and hydraulics, not only one-line facts.
Use the 28 fixed marks: General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics together carry 28 marks, which is close to the recent General qualifying mark on their own.
Sessions and Normalisation
GATE 2027 runs in forenoon (9:30 AM to 12:30 PM) and afternoon (2:30 PM to 5:30 PM) sessions on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. The paper-wise schedule has not been notified yet. In GATE 2026, CE was one of two papers held in two sessions (CE-1 and CE-2 on 14 February 2026), with a different question paper in each. A two-session CE paper is likely again for 2027, but this is not yet confirmed.
When a paper runs in more than one session, each candidate sits only one session, and raw marks are normalised so that a harder session does not disadvantage its candidates. The method assumes that the spread of ability is the same across sessions and uses the top 0.1% average and the mean plus standard deviation of each session.
How Marks Become a GATE Score
Your GATE score, out of 1000, is calculated from your marks (normalised marks for a multi-session paper) with this formula from the information brochure:
S=Sq+(St−Sq)Mt−MqM−Mq
Here M is your marks, M_q is the General category qualifying mark, M_t is the mean of the top 0.1% or top 10 candidates (whichever is larger), S_q is 350 and S_t is 900. Scoring at the General qualifying mark gives a score of 350, and scoring at the top-candidate average gives 900. Institutes and PSUs shortlist on this score, not on raw marks, so compare scores across years rather than marks.
Exam-Day Rules That Affect Your Time
Virtual calculator only: Physical calculators, phones and watches are not allowed. Practise with the official virtual calculator, which is available on the GATE 2027 website, because it is slower than a handheld one.
Scribble pad: You get one scribble pad at a time and must return it before taking another. Plan rough work compactly.
NAT keypad: NAT answers go in through an on-screen keypad, and the physical keyboard is disabled.
Time Management Strategy
First 20 to 25 minutes: General Aptitude. Ten questions, 15 marks and usually quick to verify.
Next 60 minutes: A first pass through the subject questions, answering everything you can solve in under two minutes and marking the rest.
Next 70 minutes: Longer 2-mark numericals, starting with your strongest subjects.
Last 20 to 25 minutes: Marked questions, then a check of NAT decimal places and MSQ selections.
This order is a starting point, not a rule. Test it in full-length mocks and adjust. For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt GATE CE online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to see where your minutes go.
Older pages may still describe earlier GATE patterns with different section rules, so follow the official GATE 2027 question paper pattern.
