GATE CE Eligibility 2027: Qualification, Age Limit and Rules
GATE CE eligibility 2027 decides who can sit the Civil Engineering paper of GATE 2027, conducted by IIT Madras as the organising institute. GATE sets its rules by the degree you are studying or have completed and your year of study, not by your branch, age or marks. Most candidates for the CE paper are B.E. or B.Tech Civil Engineering students in the third year or later, or graduates.
This page sets out the qualification rules from the GATE 2027 information brochure, the age rule, conditions for final-year and international candidates, the papers CE can be paired with, and common reasons a candidate may not be eligible. GATE 2027 accepts candidates who are in the third or higher year of an undergraduate degree, or who have completed a government-approved degree. The brochure lists the following degree-wise rules.
Degree or programme | Who is eligible |
|---|---|
B.E. or B.Tech (4 years after 10+2, or 3 years after B.Sc or diploma) | Third year or higher, or completed |
B.Arch (5 years), Naval Architecture or Planning (4 years) | Third year or higher, or completed |
B.Sc (Research) or B.S. (4 years) | Third year or higher, or completed |
B.Sc, B.A., B.Com or BCA (3 years) | Third year, or completed |
M.Sc, M.A., MCA or equivalent | First year or higher, or completed |

Integrated M.Sc or B.S.-M.S. (5 years) | Third year or higher, or completed |
Professional society exams equivalent to B.E. or B.Tech (for example AMIE, AMICE) | Completed Section A or equivalent |
Other degrees in the brochure, such as Pharm.D., medical degrees and B.Sc Agriculture, have their own year rules, but they are rarely relevant to the CE paper. If you are pursuing or hold a degree higher than those listed, you are also eligible.
Professional society route
Section A of AMICE from the Institution of Civil Engineers (India) or AMIE from the Institution of Engineers (India) qualifies, provided the examination is recognised by MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC as equivalent to B.E. or B.Tech. Enrolments with permanent recognition up to 31 May 2013 stand recognised as per the brochure.
Does your branch have to be Civil Engineering?
No. GATE does not tie the paper to your degree branch, so a student from another engineering branch can take CE. Your branch matters later, because M.Tech programmes and PSUs set their own discipline requirements for admission or recruitment.
Age Limit and Attempts
There is no age limit for GATE 2027. The brochure also does not set a cap on the number of times you can appear. Each GATE score is valid for three years from its result date, so you can reappear to improve a score while an older one is still valid.
Final-Year and International Candidates
Students still studying: If you are in the third year or later of a B.E. or B.Tech, you can appear now. You will need to complete the degree before joining an M.Tech or a job, as per the admitting institute's or employer's rules.
Lateral entry students: B.E. or B.Tech students who entered after a diploma or B.Sc follow the same third-year rule.
Foreign degrees: Candidates studying or graduated abroad must be in the third or higher year of, or have completed, a bachelor's degree of at least three years in an eligible field.
Exam centres: There are no international centres for GATE 2027, so all candidates sit the exam in one of 300+ cities in India.
Two-Paper Combinations with CE
You can appear in one paper or two. With CE as the primary paper, the allowed second papers are:
Code | Second paper |
|---|---|
AE | Aerospace Engineering |
AG | Agricultural Engineering |
AR | Architecture and Planning |
ES | Environmental Science and Engineering |
GE | Geomatics Engineering |
NM | Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering |
XE | Engineering Sciences |
For Civil Engineering aspirants, ES and GE overlap most with the CE syllabus. The second paper may be at a different centre but in the same city. The list is marked tentative and a combination can be withdrawn, in which case the second-paper fee is refunded.
Who Is Not Eligible
First and second-year students: B.E. or B.Tech students below the third year cannot appear.
Diploma only: A diploma in Civil Engineering on its own is not listed as a qualifying degree.
Unrecognised degrees: Degrees not approved by the government, and professional society examinations without the required equivalence, do not qualify.
Unresolved application defects: An application with defects not fixed in the rectification window can be rejected even if you meet the degree rules.
