GATE Life Sciences Cut-off: XL Qualifying Marks

The GATE Life Sciences cut-off is the qualifying mark in the XL paper that makes you eligible for a GATE scorecard. It is declared category-wise after the results and is set out of 100 marks. The latest official figures are for the GATE 2026 cycle, organised by IIT Guwahati. GATE 2027 results are scheduled for 19 March 2027, and the 2027 cut-off will be published by IIT Madras after that.

This page shows the verified GATE 2026 figures for XL, explains what affects them and helps you set a practice target. A qualifying mark is not an admission cut-off, so read the last section before you plan your score.

For GATE 2026, the official cut-off table lists 50,732 candidates registered and 40,035 appeared for the Life Sciences (XL) paper.

We list only the figures we have verified on the official site. Figures from earlier years should be checked on the official website of the respective year, because third-party tables sometimes differ. The GATE 2027 cut-off will be added here only after the organising institute publishes it.

What affects the cut-off

  • Paper difficulty: a harder paper lowers the marks most candidates score, and the qualifying mark usually moves with it.

  • Number of candidates: the figures are declared after the exam, based on the performance of the candidates who appeared.

  • Choice of optional sections: the XL paper lets you pick two of five sections, so the mix of choices can shape the score distribution.

  • Category: the three categories above carry different qualifying marks.

Cut-offs change every year, so treat last year's figures as a benchmark only. Aim for a clear margin above them rather than a bare pass.

How to set your target score

  1. Start with the 2026 benchmark: note the qualifying mark for your category and add a safe margin in your mocks.

  2. Add institution criteria: if you plan admission or a job through GATE, check what the institute or organisation requires. These are separate from the qualifying mark and are usually higher.

  3. Split the target by section: with 15 marks in General Aptitude, 25 in XL0 Chemistry and 60 in the two optional sections, plan how many marks each section should give you.

  4. Test it in mocks: take full-length timed tests in the exact pattern and track your score trend over several attempts rather than relying on one result.
