GATE Life Sciences Eligibility 2027: Who Can Apply
GATE Life Sciences eligibility for 2027 depends on your degree and your year of study, not on your age. If you are in the third year or higher of an undergraduate degree, or you have completed a government-approved degree in science, engineering, technology, architecture, commerce, arts or humanities, you can appear. IIT Madras organises GATE 2027, and the rules below come from its official eligibility criteria page.
This page lists which degrees qualify, what the year-of-study rule means for B.Sc. and M.Sc. students, the fee, the two-paper option for XL and the common reasons for trouble at the application stage. Registration for GATE 2027 has closed, so the page is also a planning guide for your next attempt.

The official page lists further rows for architecture, Pharm.D., integrated engineering programmes and professional society examinations. Read the full table on the official site if your programme is not above. A note on the page states that candidates pursuing or holding a degree higher than the one in the table may also appear.
Age limit
There is no age limit to appear for GATE 2027. The official FAQs state this directly. Your eligibility rests on the degree and the year of study alone. Individual institutions that use GATE scores for admission or jobs may set their own conditions, so check those separately.
Candidates with degrees from outside India
If you are pursuing or have obtained your qualifying degree from a country other than India, you must be in the 3rd year or higher of the degree, or have completed a bachelor's degree of at least three years in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities.
Papers you can combine with XL
You may take one paper or up to two papers from the allowed combinations. For XL, the allowed pairings are BT, CY and EY. Fill only one application, because multiple applications lead to rejection of the extra ones without a refund. If you want a second paper, add it to your original application. See the official two-paper combinations page for the full list.
Application fee and registration conditions
Category | Regular period | Extended period |
|---|---|---|
Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates | Rs. 1,000 (one paper), Rs. 2,000 (two papers) | Rs. 1,500 (one paper), Rs. 2,500 (two papers) |
All other candidates, including foreign nationals | Rs. 2,000 (one paper), Rs. 4,000 (two papers) | Rs. 2,500 (one paper), Rs. 4,500 (two papers) |
These fees come from the official application fees page for the 2027 cycle. A verified DigiLocker account is needed to apply, and the organisers advise you not to delete it after paying the fee, because future communication goes to it. Dates for GATE 2027 are tentative and can change, so confirm them on the official important dates page.
Common eligibility mistakes
Counting the wrong year: a 3-year B.Sc. student must be in the 3rd year at the time of applying, not in the 2nd.
Assuming an age cut-off: there is none, so a late start does not rule you out.
Choosing an unsupported second paper: XL pairs only with BT, CY and EY in the initial windows.
Using outdated pages: older websites may show earlier fees, dates or section letters. Follow the official GATE 2027 site.
