GATE Life Sciences Study Notes
Notes and revision material for XL0 Chemistry and the optional XL subjects, built around the official syllabus
Good GATE Life Sciences study notes are short, built around the official XL syllabus and easy to revise in the last weeks. With 100 marks spread across General Aptitude, compulsory Chemistry and two optional subjects, you will revise many topics more than once, so the way you organise notes matters as much as what you write.
This guide explains what to put in your notes for each part of the paper, how to keep them organised and how to schedule revision. The syllabi were revised for GATE 2027 and the sections are now XL0 to XL5, so build or buy notes against the current official syllabus PDFs.
What to include in your notes
Section | What to capture |
|---|---|
XL0 Chemistry (25 marks) | Key formulas (Nernst, Gibbs free energy, rate laws), reaction mechanisms, periodic trends, buffer calculations and the chemistry of amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids |
XL1 Biochemistry | Pathway maps with regulation points, enzyme kinetics, technique principles such as chromatography and electrophoresis |
XL2 Botany | Plant families and classification, hormone actions, physiology cycles, breeding and tissue culture methods |
XL3 Microbiology | Growth curves, metabolic pathways, bacterial genetics, immunity and antibiotic mechanisms |
XL4 Zoology | Animal classification, physiology of body systems, development stages, genetics problems |
XL5 Food Technology | Processing methods, D, Z and F values, food standards and engineering relations |
General Aptitude (15 marks) | Grammar rules, data interpretation methods, reasoning patterns and shortcuts |
How to organise your notes
Short notes: one page per section heading in the official syllabus, so you can tick off coverage.
Formula and fact sheets: keep a separate sheet for formulas, constants, named reactions and classifications.
Diagrams and flowcharts: draw metabolic pathways and life cycles instead of writing paragraphs.
Error log: after every test, record the question type, the mistake and the correct idea.
Overlap tags: mark topics shared across subjects, such as metabolism and gene expression, so you revise them once.
Revision schedule
Same week: review notes within a week of studying a topic.
Monthly: go through formula sheets and flowcharts for each subject.
Last six weeks: read only short notes and the error log, and use full-length tests to find weak areas.
Final week: revise formula sheets, high-yield diagrams and General Aptitude shortcuts.
Reliable sources
Start with the official GATE 2027 syllabus PDFs as your checklist, then use standard textbooks from your degree for depth. Check any ready-made notes against the 2027 syllabus before you rely on them, since older notes may use the P to U section letters and earlier topic lists.
