Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering ME
GATE ME is a recruitment exam conducted by Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, relevant to engineering graduates targeting technical government and PSU roles.
GATE ME is the Mechanical Engineering paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is a national entrance and screening test, not a recruitment exam. A valid GATE ME score is used for M.Tech, M.E. and direct PhD admissions at IITs, NITs and other institutes, for financial assistance in those programmes, and by many public sector undertakings (PSUs) to shortlist engineers. GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE, Ministry of Education.
Registration for GATE 2027 has closed, and the exam will be held on six days between 6 and 21 February 2027. This guide brings together the verified details for the ME paper: dates, eligibility, fees, the revised 2027 syllabus, the question paper pattern, past qualifying marks and a preparation plan you can follow from now until exam day.

What Is New in GATE 2027
The 2027 cycle brings more change than a usual year, so check that any material you use reflects it.
Revised syllabi: IIT Madras has revised the syllabi of the test papers, the first revision in about five years. The ME syllabus keeps its four sections but adds topics such as two-degree-of-freedom vibration, basic control systems, combustion basics, non-destructive testing, automation with PLCs and actuators, and Six Sigma.
New paper: Robotics and Automation (RA) has been added, taking the total to 30 papers. RA is also one of the papers an ME candidate may take as a second paper.
Paper code changes: Textile Engineering and Fibre Science is now a section of Engineering Sciences (XE), and some XE, XH and XL section codes have changed.
DigiLocker-based registration: Applications were made through DigiLocker with facial registration. The official site asks candidates not to delete that DigiLocker account, because later communication goes to it.
Older pages may still show the previous ME syllabus, so follow the official 2027 syllabus document.

GATE ME Eligibility Criteria
Educational qualification
You can take GATE if you are in the third or a higher year of a government-approved undergraduate programme, or have already completed one, in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities. For a typical ME aspirant, this means:
B.E. or B.Tech students: eligible from the third year onwards, and graduates of any year.
Lateral entry students: a third-year B.E. student admitted after a diploma is eligible.
Integrated and dual degree students: eligible from the third year of a five-year integrated M.E./M.Tech. or dual degree.
AMIE and similar members: eligible after completing Section A or its equivalent of a professional society course recognised as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech.
Age limit and attempts
There is no age limit for GATE 2027, and there is no limit on the number of attempts. You can appear in any year in which you meet the qualification rule.
Choosing ME as your paper
The official FAQs advise choosing a paper that matches the discipline of your qualifying degree, while keeping in mind the admission rules of the institutes you are targeting. Institutes and PSUs set their own discipline requirements, so a mechanical or closely related degree is the safe route for ME. If you take two papers, ME can be paired with AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA or XE.
For year-of-study tables, foreign candidates and documents, read the detailed GATE ME eligibility guide.
Application Fee and Application Process
Registration for GATE 2027 is closed. The fee table below is for reference, and it will help you if you plan to add a second paper or correct your application later.
Category | Regular period (one paper) | Regular period (two papers) | Extended period (one paper) | Extended period (two papers) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Female, SC, ST and PwD candidates | Rs. 1,000 | Rs. 2,000 | Rs. 1,500 | Rs. 2,500 |
All other candidates, including foreign nationals | Rs. 2,000 | Rs. 4,000 | Rs. 2,500 | Rs. 4,500 |
Applications were made through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS). The documents needed were:
Photograph: a recent passport-size colour photo, taken within the last three months.
Signature: a clear scanned signature.
Photo ID: Aadhaar is preferred; passport, PAN, voter ID or driving licence are also accepted. Carry the original to the exam.
Category or disability certificate: SC/ST certificate, PwD certificate or UDID, where applicable.
If your application has a defect: IIT Madras is scrutinising applications now. If you received a defect notice, fix it by email within the rectification window, which closes on 30 November 2026. No fee is charged for this.
GATE ME Exam Pattern 2027
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
General Aptitude | 10 (5 of 1 mark, 5 of 2 marks) | 15 |
Engineering Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering subjects | 55 | 85 (Engineering Mathematics 13) |
Total | 65 | 100 |
Question types: multiple choice (MCQ), multiple select (MSQ) and numerical answer type (NAT).
Negative marking: only for wrong MCQs, one-third of a mark for a 1-mark question and two-thirds of a mark for a 2-mark question.
No penalty: MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking, and MSQ has no partial marking.
Calculator: only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator may be used.
What this means for you
Core subjects decide your rank: after General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics, 72 marks come from mechanical subjects.
General Aptitude is high-return: 15 marks from a short syllabus is worth regular practice.
Guess selectively: a wrong 2-mark MCQ costs two-thirds of a mark, while an unanswered NAT costs nothing but also earns nothing.
For the full breakdown, see the GATE ME exam pattern 2027 page.

How the GATE ME Score Is Used
Your GATE ME score card stays valid for three years from the result date. It can be used in three main ways.
M.Tech, M.E. and PhD admissions: IITs, NITs, IISc and many other institutes use the score for postgraduate admission. Each institute runs its own counselling or application and sets its own cut-offs.
Financial assistance: the official site lists assistance of Rs. 12,400 per month for M.Tech students in MoE-supported institutes, generally for 22 months.
PSU recruitment screening: the official GATE 2027 site names PSUs such as BHEL, NTPC, IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, HAL, SAIL, NPCIL and POWERGRID among those that have used GATE scores. Each PSU publishes its own notification, eligible papers and selection stages.
Qualifying in GATE does not by itself guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. Treat it as the entry ticket, and check each institute or PSU notice for the score it actually needs.
GATE ME Qualifying Cut-off Trend
The qualifying mark is the minimum mark out of 100 needed to receive a GATE score. It is not an admission or PSU cut-off, which are usually much higher.
Year (organising institute) | General | OBC-NCL/EWS | SC/ST/PwD |
|---|---|---|---|
2026 (IIT Guwahati) | 25.2 | 22.6 | 16.7 |
2025 (IIT Roorkee) | 35.8 | 32.2 | 23.8 |
2024 (IISc Bengaluru) | 28.6 | 25.7 | 19.0 |
The 2026 figures are taken from the official GATE 2026 cut-off page; earlier years are as reported at the time and should be treated as indicative. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty and the number of candidates, so treat them as a benchmark only. See the GATE ME cut-off trend page for more years and what they mean for your target.
How to Prepare for GATE ME 2027
With the exam roughly three months away, your plan should balance finishing the syllabus with full-length practice. A simple phased approach works well.
November to mid-December, close the syllabus gaps: finish any untouched subjects, starting with the topics new in 2027, such as two-DOF vibration, control basics, NDT and automation. Solve previous year questions after each topic.
Daily General Aptitude and mathematics: give 30 to 40 minutes a day to General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics. Together they carry 28 marks and reward steady practice.
Mid-December to mid-January, subject tests: take timed subject-wise tests, then mixed tests covering two or three subjects, and keep an error log of every mistake.
Mid-January onwards, full-length mocks: take two or three 3-hour mocks a week in your expected session time, analyse each one the same day, and revise from your error log and formula sheets.
Mock tests and official practice
GATE provides an official mock test that reproduces the real exam interface and virtual calculator. As of 4 November 2026, the GATE 2027 website has not yet published its mock test links; the brochure says they will appear on the official site. Until then, the previous cycle's official ME mock is listed at https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/mock-test-links.html and is useful for getting used to the interface.
