GATE ME Cut-off: Previous Year Qualifying Marks (2021 to 2026)
The GATE ME cut-off is the minimum mark out of 100 a candidate needs in the Mechanical Engineering paper to qualify and receive a GATE score. It is set separately for each category and announced with the result. The GATE 2027 ME cut-off will be released by IIT Madras with the result on 19 March 2027.
This qualifying mark is only the first threshold. M.Tech admissions and PSU shortlists use their own, usually much higher, score cut-offs. The tables below show past ME qualifying marks so you can set a realistic target for 2027.
Table of Contents
GATE ME Qualifying Cut-off, 2021 to 2026
Year (organising institute) | General (out of 100) | OBC-NCL/EWS | SC/ST/PwD |
|---|---|---|---|
2026 (IIT Guwahati) | 25.2 | 22.6 | 16.7 |
2025 (IIT Roorkee) | 35.8 | 32.2 | 23.8 |
2024 (IISc Bengaluru) | 28.6 | 25.7 | 19.0 |
2023 (IIT Kanpur) | 28.4 | 25.5 | 18.9 |
2022 (IIT Kharagpur) | 28.1 | 25.2 | 18.7 |
2021 (IIT Bombay) | 33.0 | 29.7 | 22.0 |
The 2026 figures are from the official cut-off page of GATE 2026: https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/cut-off.html. Figures for 2021 to 2025 are as reported when each result was declared, because those cycle websites are no longer a reliable source; treat them as indicative.
Candidates Registered and Appeared
Year | Registered | Appeared |
|---|---|---|
2026 | 76,823 | 59,612 |
2025 (indicative) | 79,830 | 62,015 |
Roughly one in five registered ME candidates did not appear in either year, so the real competition is the appeared count, not the registration figure.
How the Qualifying Mark Is Set
The General qualifying mark is based on the mean plus standard deviation of all marks in the paper, with a floor of 25 out of 100 and the limits stated in the brochure. The other categories are fixed fractions of it:
OBC-NCL/EWS: 0.9×Mq, where Mq is the General qualifying mark.
SC/ST/PwD: 32×Mq.
For 2026, a General mark of 25.2 gives about 22.6 and 16.7 for the other two groups, which matches the official table. A 2026 General figure so close to the floor of 25 suggests a tougher paper or lower average marks that year.
What Affects the GATE ME Cut-off
Paper difficulty: a harder paper lowers the mean and pulls the cut-off down, as in 2026.
Spread of marks: because the formula uses mean plus standard deviation, a wide gap between strong and weak scorers raises it.
Number of candidates: a large, mixed pool of first-time and repeat candidates changes the score distribution.
Normalisation: if ME runs in more than one session, normalised marks are used, which smooths differences between sessions.
How to Set Your Target for 2027
Cut-offs change every year with difficulty and the number of candidates. Treat past figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them rather than a bare pass.
Goal | What to aim for |
|---|---|
Qualify and get a GATE score | Comfortably above the highest recent qualifying mark for your category |
M.Tech at NITs and newer institutes | Well above the qualifying mark; check last round closing scores in the counselling data |
M.Tech at older IITs and IISc, or PSU shortlists | A high score; PSUs and top institutes publish their own cut-offs, which change each year |
Remember that qualifying in GATE does not by itself guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job; each institute and PSU applies its own cut-off on top of it.
