GATE ME Eligibility 2027: Qualification, Age Limit and Year of Study

GATE ME eligibility 2027 is set by IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, and is the same for every GATE paper. The rule is simple: you must be in the third or a higher year of a government-approved undergraduate degree, or have already completed one. There is no age limit and no cap on attempts.

Registration for GATE 2027 closed in October 2026, so this page is most useful if you want to confirm that your application is valid, plan for a future cycle, or understand how GATE eligibility differs from the eligibility rules of the institutes and PSUs that use the ME score. It covers degree-wise rules, foreign candidates, PwD provisions, paper choice and the most common reasons candidates get it wrong.

What this means for a mechanical student

  • Third-year B.E. or B.Tech. students: you are eligible now. Many students take GATE ME in the third year for practice and again in the final year for admission or PSU use.

  • Final-year students: you are eligible, and you do not need your degree certificate to apply. Institutes and PSUs will check your degree at their own stage.

  • Lateral entry students: the official FAQs confirm that a third-year B.E. student admitted after a diploma through lateral entry is eligible.

  • Graduates: any year of passing is accepted, because there is no age limit and no limit on attempts.

  • Higher degree holders: candidates who hold a degree higher than those listed may also appear.

Professional society members

Candidates qualifying through professional bodies such as the Institution of Engineers (India) are eligible once they complete Section A or its equivalent. The examination must be recognised by MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch./B.Planning. The official page refers to an AICTE circular dated 23 November 2020 for recognition details, so check that your society's course is covered before you rely on it.

Because there is no age limit, working professionals can take GATE ME for M.Tech admission, research, or PSU applications. If you are preparing alongside a job, short timed online tests on Testkart are an easy way to keep practising on weekdays. Remember that PSUs set their own age limits in their recruitment notices, so a valid GATE score does not mean you meet a PSU's age rule.

Choosing ME as Your Paper

The official FAQs advise choosing a paper that matches the discipline of your qualifying degree, while keeping in mind the admission criteria of the institutes you want to join. GATE itself does not stop an eligible candidate from selecting ME, but admitting institutes and PSUs usually expect ME candidates to hold a mechanical or closely related degree.

Allowed two-paper combinations with ME

If ME is your primary paper, the second paper can only be one of these:

Code

Second paper

AE

Aerospace Engineering

CS

Computer Science and Information Technology

DA

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

IN

Instrumentation Engineering

NM

Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

PI

Production and Industrial Engineering

RA

Robotics and Automation (new in 2027)

XE

Engineering Sciences

  • Same application: both papers must be chosen in one application. If you paid for one paper, a second paper can be added later to the same enrolment ID; do not create a new one.

  • Same city: the second paper may be at a different centre, but it will be in the same city.

  • Combinations can change: IIT Madras may add or withdraw combinations depending on scheduling. If a combination is withdrawn, the fee for the second paper is refunded.

PI and RA overlap strongly with the manufacturing, automation and industrial engineering parts of the ME syllabus, so they are the most natural second papers for many mechanical students.

Candidates with Degrees from Outside India

  • Eligibility: candidates studying or qualified outside India must be in the third or higher year, or have completed a bachelor's degree of at least three years, in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities.

  • Exam centres: GATE 2027 has no international centres, so you must choose an exam city in India and arrange your own travel and stay.

  • Fee: foreign nationals and Indian citizens living abroad pay the fee for "all other candidates".

  • Identity proof: a valid passport, another government-issued photo ID or a driving licence is accepted.

PwD Candidates: Scribe and Compensatory Time

Eligibility for PwD candidates is the same as for everyone else, but the brochure provides extra support during the exam and a lower fee.

Provision

GATE 2027 rule

Fee

Rs. 1,000 for one paper in the regular period, the same as female, SC and ST candidates

Compensatory time

20 minutes per hour, which is one extra hour for the 3-hour paper

Scribe without a medical certificate

Blindness, locomotor disability affecting both arms, or cerebral palsy, with a valid PwD certificate or UDID

Scribe for other disabilities

Allowed with a medical certificate in the brochure's format showing a limitation in writing

Who arranges the scribe

GATE arranges scribes; your own scribe is allowed only if GATE cannot arrange one, with the prescribed form

When to request

At the time of application; requests made on the spot are not accepted

Candidates who use a scribe receive the compensatory time automatically. Check the brochure for the exact certificate formats before exam day.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • First and second-year B.E. or B.Tech. students: you must be in at least the third year of the programme.

  • Diploma-only holders: a diploma alone does not meet the rule. You become eligible once you reach the third year of a degree, for example through lateral entry.

  • Unrecognised programmes: the degree must be government approved. Professional society courses must be recognised as equivalent to a degree.

  • Second-year students of 3-year B.Sc., B.A. or B.Com.: eligibility starts only in the third year.

A wrong eligibility declaration can lead to rejection, and qualifying in GATE does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job.

GATE Eligibility Versus Admission and PSU Eligibility
