HPSC HCS Study Notes 2026: Topic-wise Guide

What to include in your notes, how to organise them and how to revise.

Good HPSC HCS study notes do two jobs: they shrink a very wide syllabus into something you can revise in days, and they prepare you to write answers in Mains. With four General Studies papers, English and Hindi papers and a separate Haryana track, scattered notes quickly become a problem.

This page shows what to include, how to organise it and how to revise, for the Haryana Civil Services (Executive Branch) and Other Allied Services Examination.

Contents

What to include in your notes

Section

What your notes should hold

History and culture

Timelines, movements, art forms, Haryana's formation in 1966

Polity and governance

Constitutional provisions, institutions, schemes, state administration

Economy and environment

Concepts, budget terms, agriculture, water and conservation issues

Haryana

History, rivers, districts, economy, culture, flagship schemes

Ethics

Definitions, thinkers, a case-study answer template

English and Hindi

Precis rules, grammar points, essay outlines in both languages

The official syllabus only asks for related issues of Haryana, so build the state notebook from your own reading and past questions.

How to organise HPSC HCS notes

  • Keep short notes per topic: One page per topic, written in your own words, is easier to revise than a copied chapter.

  • Tag by paper: Mark each page as Prelims, Mains or both, since polity and economy serve both stages.

  • Maintain an error log: After every test, note the question, the correct answer and the reason you missed it.

  • Write monthly current-affairs notes: Group items under polity, economy, environment and Haryana so they match the syllabus.

  • Prepare answer frames: For Mains, keep a one-line introduction, two or three points and a conclusion ready for common question types.

Revision schedule

  1. Daily: Twenty minutes on yesterday's notes and the current-affairs items of the day.

  2. Weekly: Revise one subject fully and attempt a short test on it.

  3. Monthly: Revise the error log and the monthly current-affairs notes.

  4. Final two months: Revise only the short notes, formula-style lists and error log. Avoid starting new books.

Reliable sources for your notes

Start with NCERT-level books for history, geography, polity and economy, then add one standard reference per subject. For dates, pattern and syllabus changes, rely on the notification at hpsc.gov.in and not on forwarded PDFs. Fewer sources, revised several times, work better than many sources read once.

Notes and mock tests together

Notes build understanding, and tests show whether it holds under time pressure. After each test, add missed points to your notes instead of rereading whole chapters. You can attempt HPSC HCS online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to decide which pages need rework.
