IBPS PO Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains & Marking Scheme

The IBPS PO exam pattern for 2026 (CRP PO/MT-XVI) has five steps. These are a Preliminary exam, a Main exam with objective and descriptive parts, a Personality Test, an interview and provisional allotment. The Prelims structure is the same as last year. The Mains is not. Its objective paper now has 170 questions instead of 145, marks have moved between sections, and the sectional timings are different.

Whether you are writing the Mains on 4 October 2026 or planning for the next cycle, these details decide how you should use your time in the exam hall. This guide explains each stage, the marking scheme, the rules on timing and cut-offs, and how the final merit is worked out, with simple examples.

  • Each section has its own 20-minute timer. You cannot move between sections or carry unused time forward.

  • You must clear the cut-off in every section and the overall cut-off.

  • Reasoning carries more marks than quant for the same number of questions, so accuracy in puzzles and arrangements pays more.

  • A high Prelims score gives no advantage later. It only takes you to the Mains.

Descriptive Paper

The descriptive paper follows immediately after the objective test, so the full sitting is 3 hours 10 minutes.

  • Tasks: One essay and one comprehension, typed on the computer in English.

  • Marks and time: 25 marks, 30 minutes.

  • Evaluation: It is checked only for candidates who secure the minimum qualifying marks in the objective tests. The notification also says an automated scoring mechanism may be used.

  • Letter writing: Not part of the current pattern, although some websites still list it.

What Changed from the Previous Cycle

The biggest revision in the IBPS PO exam pattern this year is in the Mains objective test.

  • Awareness gained the most: 15 more questions and 10 more marks.

  • English lost half its marks while gaining five questions.

  • Reasoning lost five minutes for the same 40 questions.

  • A Personality Test was added between the Mains and the interview.

Some websites still show last year's sectional timings for the Mains, so confirm the figures in the official notification before you plan your mocks.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

Many pages say 0.25 marks are cut for every wrong answer. The actual rule is that one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. Since marks per question differ across sections, the penalty differs too. A blank question carries no penalty, and the descriptive paper has no negative marking.

These are averages that assume marks are spread evenly within a section.

Why this matters: Take Mains Reasoning. Candidate A attempts 30 questions and gets 24 right: 36 marks minus 2.25 in penalties gives 33.75. Candidate B attempts 36 and gets 25 right: 37.5 minus 4.13 gives 33.37. Six extra attempts produced a lower score.

Sectional Timing, Cut-offs and Normalisation

Feature / Parameter

Rule & Mechanism

Strategic / Contextual Insight

Sectional Timing

Strict individual time limits applied to each section in both Prelims and Mains.

Unused time in one section cannot be transferred or used in another section.

Cut-off Policy

Dual cut-off structure:

1. Sectional Cut-off: Minimum score required in every section.

2. Overall Cut-off: Minimum aggregate score across the entire test.

Fixed category-wise by IBPS after the exam based on performance and vacancies.

Score Normalisation

Equi-percentile method applied across multi-shift exams.

Adjusts for difficulty variations across shifts so candidates are not penalized for facing a tougher paper.

Cut-off Trends & Benchmarks

Historical reference cut-offs (General Category):

• Mains 2024: 66.50 / 225

• Mains 2025: 75.75 / 225

• Prelims 2025: 49.21 / 100

Cut-offs vary annually; qualifying generally requires scoring around one-third of total marks in Mains. Use these strictly as reference benchmarks.

Personality Test and Interview

Stage / Component

Marks / Weightage

Qualifying Criteria

Description & Key Guidelines

Personality Test

Mandatory (No fixed marks)

No minimum qualifying marks required

• Self-report assessment taken prior to the interview.

• Profile generated is shared directly with the interview panel.

• No syllabus or preparation needed; requires honest responses.

Personal Interview

100 Marks

• General / EWS: Minimum 40% (40 marks)

• SC / ST / OBC / PwBD: Minimum 35% (35 marks)

• Conducted by participating banks for shortlisted candidates.

• Assesses candidate profile, suitability, and core competence.

How the Final Merit Is Calculated

Prelims marks are dropped. The Main exam score (out of 225) gets 80% weight and the interview (out of 100) gets 20%. Here is an illustration with assumed numbers.

Component

Score

Conversion

Contribution

Main exam

110 out of 225

110 ÷ 225 × 80

39.11

Interview

65 out of 100

65 ÷ 100 × 20

13.00

Final score

52.11 out of 100

For reference, the general-category final cut-off in the previous cycle was 46.11. IBPS uses normalised scores, so the real calculation can differ slightly, but the lesson holds: four-fifths of your selection is decided in the Mains.

How to Use the Exam Pattern in Your Preparation

Knowing the IBPS PO exam pattern helps only if it changes how you practise.

  • Practise with sectional timers on. A full mock without section locks does not prepare you for the real test.

  • Give awareness daily time. It offers 60 marks in 35 minutes and needs no calculation.

  • Keep English in proportion. Twenty objective marks deserve less time than the 25-mark descriptive paper, but the sectional cut-off still applies.

  • Track accuracy, not attempts. The example above shows why.

  • Rehearse the full 190 minutes. Typing an essay after 160 minutes of objective questions is tiring, and you should feel that before exam day.
