IBPS RRB Officer Scale 2 Exam Pattern 2026: GBO and Specialist

The IBPS RRB Officer Scale 2 exam pattern is simpler than most banking exams in one way and harder in another. There is no preliminary stage, only one online paper, but that paper comes in two different formats depending on the post you choose. General Banking Officer (GBO) candidates face 200 questions in 2 hours. Specialist Officer candidates face 240 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes.

This page covers the pattern for the CRP RRBs XV cycle, in which the single online exam for Officer Scale II and III is scheduled for 20 December 2026 (tentative). It explains the marks per question, the negative marking, how the interview is added to your score and how to plan your time inside the paper. The official source for every rule is the IBPS website: https://www.ibps.in.

The Specialist posts are IT Officer, Chartered Accountant, Law Officer, Treasury Manager, Marketing Officer and Agricultural Officer. The exam is conducted in English and Hindi, and you pick either the English Language or the Hindi Language test at the time of application.

GBO exam pattern

The GBO paper has five tests of 40 questions each. The marks are not equal, which is the most important thing to notice in the table.

Professional Knowledge is questions from your own degree or professional field, such as DBMS and networking for IT, accounting and tax for CA and Treasury, or banking and commercial law for Law. It is worth as much as Reasoning or Quantitative Aptitude in this format, so it is not a side section.

Marking scheme and negative marking

Every correct answer earns the full marks for that question. Every wrong answer costs one-fourth of the marks allotted to that question, so the penalty is 14\frac{1}{4} of the question's value. Unanswered questions carry no penalty.

The deductions are worked out from the marks and question counts in the advertisement and the one-fourth rule. Fractions are shown as calculated, so confirm the final treatment in the information handout.

What the pattern means for you

  • Spend time where marks are: In the GBO paper, 80 questions in Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude carry 100 of the 200 marks. Computer Knowledge has the same number of questions for 20 marks.

  • Specialists have under 40 seconds per question: With 240 questions in 150 minutes, the average is 37.5 seconds. Professional Knowledge, Financial Awareness and Computer Knowledge have to be answered from memory, not worked out.

  • Guessing costs more on high-value questions: A wrong GBO Quantitative answer loses about 0.31 marks. Skip questions you cannot finish rather than guessing blind.

  • Sectional cut-offs matter: IBPS applies minimum scores in each test as well as overall, so a strong section does not rescue a very weak one.

Interview and final merit

Candidates who clear the online exam cut-offs are shortlisted for a common interview of 100 marks. As reported in the CRP RRBs XIV and earlier cycles, the minimum qualifying score is 40 percent, or 35 percent for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates (tentative for this cycle until confirmed in the advertisement).

Final merit combines the two stages: exam marks are converted to a base of 100 and counted at 80 percent, and the interview score out of 100 is counted at 20 percent.

Worked example

This example uses assumed numbers and a simple proportional conversion. IBPS may normalise scores, so the real calculation can differ.

Because the exam carries four-fifths of the weight, a good interview helps but cannot make up for a weak paper.

Time management in the exam

The advertisement gives a composite time for each format and says IBPS may fix a separate duration for each test, which is explained in the information handout. In recent cycles the handout has allotted 30 minutes each to Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and the language test, 15 minutes each to Financial Awareness and Computer Knowledge, and 30 minutes to Professional Knowledge for Specialists. Treat these timings as indicative until the handout for this cycle is released.

  • Do the fast sections cleanly: Financial Awareness and Computer Knowledge give 40 questions in 15 minutes each, so you must pick up easy marks quickly and move on.

  • Choose your Quant questions: Start with simplification, number series and straightforward Data Interpretation, and leave long caselets for last.

  • Do not carry time across tests: If tests are timed separately, unused minutes may not roll over. Practise inside the limit for each test.

  • Review in the last minutes: Use any leftover time to check questions you marked, not to attempt new guesses.

Older pages and the official source

Many pages online still show the Officer Scale I preliminary and main structure, or an older three-hour Scale II paper. Scale II has no preliminary exam, so follow the CRP RRBs XV advertisement and the information handout on the official IBPS website. At the time of writing, IBPS has not published an official mock test for this exam.
