ICMR Assistant Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification, Relaxation

ICMR Assistant eligibility rests on three conditions: a bachelor's degree in any discipline, working knowledge of computers, and an age of not more than 30 years on the closing date of the application, with relaxation for reserved categories. These rules come from the latest direct recruitment notifications issued by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) institutes in 2025 for the Group B Assistant post at Pay Level 6.

This page explains each condition in detail, shows the age relaxation table, lists the documents you will need, and points out the mistakes that most often lead to rejection. No new direct recruitment notification for the post is open as of 28 October 2026, so confirm every rule again in the next notification before you apply.

Educational Qualification

You need a bachelor's degree with a course duration of at least three years in any discipline. Arts, commerce, science, engineering and other streams all qualify, provided the university or institution is recognised.

Key points about the degree

  • Any discipline is accepted: The notifications do not ask for a specific subject or minimum percentage.

  • Three-year minimum: A diploma or a shorter course does not meet the requirement on its own.

  • Result by the closing date: Plan on having your final result declared by the last date of application, since eligibility is judged on that date. Check the exact wording in your notification.

  • Recognised university: Degrees from universities recognised by the UGC or institutions established by law are accepted. Distance-mode degrees should come from a recognised and approved programme.

Working knowledge of computers

The notifications list working knowledge of computers, specifically MS Office and PowerPoint, as part of the essential qualification. You do not need a separate certificate to apply, but the skill is tested directly in the Computer Proficiency Test, which includes typing at 45 words per minute in English or 40 words per minute in Hindi, an Excel task and a PowerPoint task.

Age Limit

The upper age limit for the ICMR Assistant post is 30 years. The 2025 ICMR-NIN and ICMR-NIE notifications state the range as 18 to 30 years.

How age is calculated

  • Reference date: Age is counted as on the closing date for online applications.

  • Accepted proof: Only the date of birth recorded in the matriculation or secondary certificate. Later requests to change it are not accepted.

For example, if a notification closes on 31 March 2027, an unreserved candidate must not be older than 30 years on 31 March 2027. Work out your own date-of-birth window as soon as the notification gives the closing date, and add your category relaxation to the upper limit.

As per rules

The PwBD combinations and ex-servicemen rules follow general Government of India orders; check the exact limits in the notification you apply under. Reserved-category candidates applying against unreserved vacancies do not get extra relaxation beyond what an unreserved candidate gets.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Nationality: Candidates must meet the Government of India rules on nationality for central government posts. Indian citizens are eligible.

  • Category certificates: SC, ST, OBC (NCL) and EWS claims need certificates in the prescribed central government format, valid for the year stated in the notification.

  • Transfer liability: Assistants can be posted anywhere in India at ICMR Headquarters or its institutes.

  • Probation: Selected candidates serve a probation of two years.

  • One application per post per institute: In institute-level notifications, each post needs a separate application and fee.

Eligibility for Serving Employees

Government employees can apply through direct recruitment if they meet the qualification and age rules. They need a No Objection Certificate from the current employer in the format given in the notification.

The table below shows every mode ICMR uses to fill Assistant posts. Only direct recruitment is open to outside candidates.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Candidates with only a diploma or Class 12: They can look at the ICMR LDC post instead, which asks for Class 12.

  • Candidates above the age limit: Unless they qualify for a specific relaxation and can prove it.

  • Candidates with incomplete degrees: If the result is not declared by the date the notification sets.

  • Candidates with invalid category certificates: Wrong format, wrong year or missing non-creamy layer status for OBC.

  • Candidates who give false information: Candidature can be cancelled at any stage, even after appointment.

Special Cases Explained

Final-year students

Final-year students can apply only if the notification allows it and the result is declared by the date it specifies. The 2025 notifications judged eligibility on the closing date, so a pending result is a risk. Read the qualification clause of the next notification before paying the fee.

Distance learning degrees

They count if the programme and university are recognised by the competent authority for the year of study. Keep the recognition details handy for document verification.

Typing speed and the application

Typing is not checked at the application stage, but you must reach 45 words per minute in English or 40 in Hindi in the Computer Proficiency Test to be selected.

Applying to several institutes

In the 2025 cycle, each institute issued its own notification, and candidates could apply to several. Each application needs its own fee, and exam slots for different posts may fall on different days.

UDC and LDC as additional options

If you are a graduate, you can also look at the UDC and LDC posts notified alongside Assistant. All three used the same CBT syllabus in 2025, so one preparation can cover them.

Eligibility Under the AIIMS CRE Route

Some ICMR Assistant vacancies were included in the AIIMS Common Recruitment Examination (CRE-4). For CRE notices, AIIMS publishes the qualification and age limit post by post. Reports of the CRE-5 notice list an Assistant post with a bachelor's degree plus computer knowledge and a maximum age of 30, which matches the ICMR rules. Treat this as indicative and confirm the post code and conditions in the CRE notice on the AIIMS exams portal.

Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply

Run through this list when the next notification is released. It takes ten minutes and prevents most avoidable rejections.

  1. Confirm the post and institute: Note the post code (for example, ASST01 in the 2025 notices), the number of vacancies in your category and the institute's location.

  2. Calculate your age window: Use the closing date, your Class 10 date of birth and your category relaxation.

  3. Check your degree: Make sure it is at least three years long, from a recognised university, with the result declared by the required date.

  4. Check certificate validity: OBC (NCL) and EWS certificates must match the format and financial year the notification specifies.

  5. Collect experience proof: Certificates with exact joining and relieving dates, since experience can add up to 5 marks.

  6. Arrange the NOC: Government employees should request it early, because offices take time to issue it.

  7. Prepare scans: Photograph, signature and documents in the sizes and formats given in the notice.

  8. Test your typing speed: If you are below 45 words per minute, start daily practice the same week.

After you apply

Keep a printout of the submitted form and the fee receipt. Watch your registered email and the institute or ICMR notice board for the admit card, which is usually issued after the application window closes. The latest notices are published on the ICMR employment page: https://www.icmr.gov.in/employment-opportunities
