Indian Coast Guard Navik GD

Indian Coast Guard Navik GD is a recruitment exam, relevant to candidates preparing for the armed forces and paramilitary recruitment.

Navik (General Duty) is the sailor entry of the Indian Coast Guard for candidates who have passed Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics. Navik GD personnel serve on ships and at shore units, and they are selected through the Coast Guard Enrolled Personnel Test (CGEPT). The current recruitment covers two training batches together, CGEPT 01/2027 and CGEPT 02/2027, and for the first time the written stage is being conducted through the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

This guide brings the Indian Coast Guard Navik GD recruitment into one place: dates, vacancies, eligibility, fee, the new exam pattern, syllabus, physical and medical standards, pay and a practical preparation plan. Where the official schedule is still tentative, it is marked as such. Online registration ran from 6 to 21 October 2026, so the focus now is on preparing for Stage I.

What Changed in the 2027 Recruitment Cycle

If you followed earlier CGEPT cycles, three changes matter most this time.

  • SSC runs the written stage: The Coast Guard announced in early October 2026 that the Staff Selection Commission would conduct the written examination for CGEPT 01/2027 and 02/2027. Registration and Stage I communication therefore run through the SSC portal, while the physical, medical and training stages stay with the Coast Guard.

  • One paper instead of two sections: Stage I is now a single computer-based test of 100 questions in one hour. Previous cycles used two separately timed sections for Navik GD, with 110 questions in 75 minutes.

  • Two batches in one notification: Both 2027 training batches were advertised together, with the same Navik GD vacancy count for each.

Older pages may still show the two-section pattern and the earlier fitness standards, so follow the 2027 notification for anything that affects your preparation.

Male vacancies are divided zone-wise, and each zone has its own merit list. Female vacancies are filled on an all-India basis. The same notification also covers Navik (Domestic Branch), Yantrik and Hygienist-I posts, which take the total to 365, but a candidate can apply for only one post.

Educational qualification

You must have passed Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics from an education board recognised by the Council of Boards of School Education (COBSE). Passing in both subjects is compulsory. The marksheets you upload are checked again at later stages and finally authenticated with the board.

Age limit

For both 2027 batches, your date of birth must fall between 1 November 2005 and 1 May 2009. That works out to an age band of roughly 18 to 22 years. Relaxation applies only against vacancies reserved for your category.

Other conditions

  • Nationality: Only Indian citizens, male and female, can apply.

  • Marriage during training: You cannot marry or keep family with you during the training period.

  • Physical and medical fitness: You must meet the height, chest, vision and fitness standards described below.

Application Fee and How to Apply

Exempted

The fee is paid online by net banking, debit or credit card or UPI, and it is not refundable. The application steps for this cycle were:

  1. Register on the SSC portal with a valid email address and mobile number.

  2. Log in, select the Coast Guard CGEPT recruitment and choose the Navik (GD) post.

  3. Fill in personal, educational and category details exactly as they appear in your certificates.

  4. Upload your photograph, signature and the required documents in the specified format.

  5. Select your preferred exam cities. The Coast Guard may allot a different city.

  6. Pay the fee if applicable, submit the form and keep a printout.

If you submit more than one application, only the latest one is considered and the fee for earlier ones is not refunded. Mismatches between the form and your certificates are a common cause of rejection at Stage II, so check names, dates of birth and marks carefully.

Stage I is a computer-based examination conducted by SSC. It is the only stage that decides merit.

Minimum qualifying marks

40 for UR, EWS and OBC; 35 for SC and ST

What this means for you:

  • Speed decides the score: You get about 36 seconds per question, so fast calculation and quick recall matter more than long derivations.

  • Attempt every question: With no negative marking, a blank answer can only cost you marks.

  • Passing is not selection: The qualifying mark only keeps you in the race. Final selection depends on your zone-wise or all-India rank.

Marks are normalised if the exam runs in several shifts. See the full Navik GD exam pattern and marking scheme for stage-wise details and timing strategy.

The 2027 notification says the detailed syllabus is available on the SSC portal, and it does not print a subject-wise question split. The table below is built from the syllabus the Coast Guard has used for Navik GD so far, so use it as a working checklist.

Selection Process

  1. Stage I: Computer-based exam. Candidates are shortlisted for Stage II on Stage I performance and the handling capacity of Coast Guard recruitment centres.

  2. Stage II: Identity and biometric checks, Physical Fitness Test, assessment (adaptability) test, document verification and recruitment medical. All parts are qualifying. The assessment test score is used only to break ties.

  3. Stage III: Document verification and pre-enrolment medical at INS Chilka, the Coast Guard's training establishment in Odisha.

  4. Stage IV: Authentication of your educational documents with the issuing boards.

The final merit list is drawn from Stage I marks for candidates who clear Stage II, against the vacancies available. If two candidates tie, the older candidate ranks higher, followed by the higher assessment test score.

Physical Fitness Test and Medical Standards

The PFT is held at Stage II. All events are done in one continuous sequence, and a break means failure.

Check the female standards against the notification table before you train to a target. Key medical standards include:

  • Height: At least 157 cm for men and 152 cm for women, with relaxations for candidates from notified hill, tribal and island regions.

  • Chest (men): At least 77 cm with a minimum expansion of 5 cm. Weight should be proportionate to height and age.

  • Vision: 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye for the GD branch. Check the notification for the rule on corrective lenses.

  • Other checks: At least 14 dental points, normal hearing, and tattoos only where the Coast Guard permits them.

Salary, Training and Career Growth

A Navik GD starts at Pay Level 3 with a basic pay of Rs. 21,700 a month. Dearness Allowance and other allowances are added according to the posting and nature of duty, so the take-home amount varies.

  • Training: Basic training at INS Chilka, followed by professional and sea training. Your trade within the GD branch is allotted on the basis of training performance and service needs.

  • Benefits: Free rations and clothing, medical care for you and your family, government accommodation, leave travel concession, group insurance and canteen facilities.

  • Promotion path: Navik, Uttam Navik, Pradhan Navik, Uttam Adhikari and Pradhan Adhikari, with an opportunity to be considered for officer entry subject to Coast Guard rules.

How to Prepare for Coast Guard Navik GD

The 2027 paper rewards accuracy at speed across school-level subjects. A focused plan works better than covering everything at the same depth.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4, foundations: Revise NCERT Class 10 Mathematics and Science and Class 11 to 12 Physics and Mathematics. Make a one-page formula and concept sheet per chapter.

  2. Weeks 3 to 6, daily practice: Add 30 minutes of English grammar and vocabulary and 20 minutes of reasoning drills every day. Read current affairs for 20 minutes and keep short monthly notes.

  3. Weeks 5 to 8, topic tests: Take short timed tests chapter by chapter. Note the questions that took longer than a minute.

  4. Final phase, full mocks: Attempt 100-question, 60-minute mocks two or three times a week, analyse them the same day and revise from your error log.

For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt Coast Guard Navik GD online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to see where your minutes go. Pair them with previous year questions to understand the real difficulty level. Start your PFT training alongside written preparation, because Stage II follows within a few months of Stage I.

Qualifying Marks and Cut-off

The 2027 notification fixes minimum qualifying marks of 40 out of 100 for UR, EWS and OBC candidates and 35 for SC and ST candidates. These are pass marks, not the selection cut-off. The marks needed for a Stage II call or a final place depend on your zone, category, the number of vacancies and the overall standard of candidates.

The Coast Guard does not usually publish a detailed final cut-off for Navik GD. Aim for a clear margin above the pass mark rather than a bare pass. The Navik GD cut-off guide explains how to set a realistic target score.
