Coast Guard Navik GD Syllabus 2027: Topic-wise Guide

The Coast Guard Navik GD syllabus covers school-level Mathematics, Physics, Science, English, Reasoning and General Awareness. Mathematics and Physics go up to Class 12 standard, because Navik (General Duty) is the Class 12 entry of the Indian Coast Guard. For the CGEPT 01/2027 and 02/2027 cycle, the Stage I written exam is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) as a single paper of 100 questions.

The 2027 notification states that the detailed syllabus is available on the SSC portal, but it does not print a topic list or a subject-wise question split. The topic lists below are built from the syllabus the Coast Guard has published for Navik GD in earlier cycles and from the type of questions asked so far. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list, and match them against the portal syllabus before your final revision.

The table shows each subject, the standard it is set at and how many questions it carried in the previous two-section pattern. The 2027 split has not been published, so treat the last column as an indication of relative weight only.

The 2027 Stage I paper has 100 questions in one hour with no negative marking.

Key Changes to Know for 2027

  • Single paper: The two separately timed sections of earlier cycles have been replaced by one 100-question paper. You no longer need to clear two section-wise pass marks; the qualifying mark is 40 out of 100 (35 for SC and ST).

  • Syllabus on the SSC portal: Because SSC now conducts Stage I, the detailed syllabus sits on the SSC portal rather than in the notification text.

  • Same subject base: Nothing in the notification suggests new subjects. Expect the same mix of Class 10 general subjects and Class 12 Mathematics and Physics.

  • Less time per question: About 36 seconds per question, against roughly 41 seconds earlier. Speed in Mathematics and Physics matters more than before.

Older pages may still show the Section I and Section II structure with separate pass marks, so follow the 2027 notification and the SSC portal.

Mathematics Syllabus

Mathematics is the heaviest subject for Navik GD. It is tested at two levels, so plan it as two blocks.

Class 10 level Mathematics

Quadratic equations

Geometry and mensuration

Triangles, circles, constructions, area and volume of plane and solid figures

Area and volume

Trigonometry

Ratios, identities, heights and distances

Standard angle values

Statistics and probability

Mean, median, mode, simple probability

Mean and probability

Class 11 to 12 level Mathematics

Area

Topics to cover

Start with

Algebra

Sets, relations and functions, complex numbers, sequences and series, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, matrices and determinants

Matrices and determinants

Trigonometry

Trigonometric functions, identities, equations, inverse trigonometric functions

Identities

Coordinate geometry

Straight lines, circles, conic sections, three-dimensional geometry

Straight lines

Calculus

Limits, continuity, differentiation, applications of derivatives, integration, definite integrals, differential equations

Differentiation

Vectors and probability

Vector algebra, dot and cross products, conditional probability

Vector basics

High-return chapters are usually the ones with short, direct questions: matrices and determinants, standard derivatives and integrals, straight lines and basic probability. Long proofs are rarely useful in a 36-second format, so practise recognising the result rather than deriving it.

Physics Syllabus

Physics is tested at Class 11 and 12 level. The Coast Guard's earlier syllabus names six areas, listed below with the chapters they normally include.

Area

Topics to cover

Start with

Mechanics

Units and measurement, motion in a straight line and a plane, laws of motion, work, energy and power, rotational motion, gravitation, properties of solids and fluids

Laws of motion

Thermodynamics

Thermal properties of matter, laws of thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases

First law of thermodynamics

Oscillations and waves

Simple harmonic motion, wave motion, sound

Simple harmonic motion

Electricity and magnetism

Electrostatics, capacitance, current electricity, magnetic effects of current, magnetism, electromagnetic induction, alternating current

Current electricity

Optics

Reflection, refraction, lenses and mirrors, optical instruments, wave optics

Lenses and mirrors

Modern physics and electronics

Dual nature of matter, atoms, nuclei, semiconductors, diodes and transistors, logic gates, communication basics

Semiconductors and logic gates

Keep a list of SI units and dimensions, because unit-based questions are quick marks. Electricity, optics and modern physics have many direct questions, so they repay early attention.

Science Syllabus (Class 10)

General Science is set at Class 10 level and overlaps with Physics. Cover these areas:

  • Physics basics: Light, electricity, magnetic effects of current, motion, force, work and energy, sound.

  • Chemistry basics: Chemical reactions and equations, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds, periodic classification.

  • Biology basics: Life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, human body, nutrition, diseases and environment.

Chemistry and Biology appear only at this level, so short notes from NCERT Class 9 and 10 textbooks are enough.

English Syllabus

English is set at Class 10 level and tests usage rather than literature.

  • Grammar: Tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech.

  • Error detection and improvement: Spotting the incorrect part of a sentence and choosing the correct replacement.

  • Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, idioms and phrases, spellings.

  • Comprehension: Short passages with direct questions, fill in the blanks and sentence rearrangement.

Reasoning Syllabus

Reasoning questions are short and mostly non-verbal or verbal puzzles of a basic level.

  • Verbal reasoning: Analogy, classification (odd one out), number and letter series, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking and order.

  • Non-verbal reasoning: Figure series, mirror and water images, paper folding, embedded figures and figure counting.

Reasoning is the fastest subject to improve with daily drills of 15 to 20 questions.

General Awareness Syllabus

General Awareness carried the fewest questions in the previous pattern, so keep it light but regular.

  • Current affairs: National and international events of the last six to eight months, schemes, appointments, sports and awards.

  • Static GK: Indian history, geography, polity, economy basics, books and authors, important days.

  • Defence and maritime: Basic facts about the Indian Coast Guard, its role, ranks and recent exercises, and India's coastline and ports.

Where the Subjects Overlap

Several topics repeat across subjects. Study them once at the higher level and you cover both.

Area

Class 10 subject

Class 12 subject

How to plan

Electricity and magnetism

Science

Physics

Learn the Class 12 chapters; the Class 10 questions become easy

Light and optics

Science

Physics

Revise mirror and lens rules once, then practise both levels

Motion and energy

Science

Physics

Use Class 11 mechanics as the base

Trigonometry and probability

Mathematics (Class 10)

Mathematics (Class 12)

Revise identities and basic probability together

Arithmetic and data

Mathematics (Class 10)

Reasoning

Number series and percentage practice helps both

Subject-wise Priority Plan

Because the 2027 split is not published, divide your study time by the previous weightage and by how quickly each subject improves. The shares below are a suggestion for a typical candidate, not an official ratio.

Subject

Suggested share of study time

Why

Mathematics (both levels)

About 35 percent

Largest share of questions in the past and the slowest to speed up

Physics and Class 10 Science

About 30 percent

Second-largest block, with heavy overlap between the two levels

English

About 15 percent

Steady marks once grammar rules are clear

Reasoning

About 10 percent

Improves quickly with short daily practice

General Awareness

About 10 percent

Few questions, but needs regular reading to stay current

Adjust the shares after your first two or three mocks. If you already score well in English, move that time to Physics or calculus, where most candidates lose marks.

Common Mistakes While Preparing the Syllabus

  • Skipping Class 12 Mathematics: Some candidates prepare only Class 10 level Mathematics because the paper looks general. Earlier papers had a full section on Class 11 to 12 Mathematics, so leaving it out is risky.

  • Studying Physics only from theory: Reading chapters without solving numerical questions leaves you slow on exam day. Solve at least 20 short questions per chapter.

  • Following the old two-section timing: Practising 45-minute and 30-minute blocks no longer matches the exam. Train in a single 60-minute window.

  • Ignoring current affairs until the end: General Awareness is small but needs months of reading. A few minutes daily is easier than cramming.

  • Leaving PFT practice for after the result: The run and the continuous strength sequence need weeks of training, so start early.

Is There a Syllabus for Stage II?

Stage II has no written syllabus. It includes the Physical Fitness Test, an assessment (adaptability) test, document verification and a recruitment medical. All of these are qualifying. The assessment test score does not enter the merit list and is used only to break a tie.

The PFT is a continuous sequence of a 1.6 km run, squats, push-ups and bent-knee sit-ups.

How to Cover the Navik GD Syllabus

A phased plan keeps the heavy subjects moving while you build speed.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: Class 11 to 12 Mathematics and Physics concepts, two chapters a week each. Make a one-page sheet per chapter with key results and units.

  2. Weeks 2 to 6: Add Class 10 Science and Mathematics revision, plus 30 minutes of English and 20 minutes of reasoning every day.

  3. From week 3: Read current affairs for 15 to 20 minutes a day and keep a monthly page of notes.

  4. Weeks 5 to 8: Chapter-wise timed tests. Target under 40 seconds per question and record slow or wrong questions in an error log.

  5. Final phase: Full-length 100-question, 60-minute mocks two to three times a week, with same-day analysis and error-log revision.
