Indian Navy Senior Secondary Recruit
Recruitment exam for Indian Navy
The Indian Navy SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) is the Navy's sailor entry for candidates who have passed Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics. Since the Agnipath scheme began, the Navy advertises these posts as Agniveer (SSR), and the Directorate of Manpower Planning and Recruitment at Naval Headquarters, New Delhi, runs the recruitment. Older pages may still call it SSR or AA, so follow the current notification.
The current cycle covers the 01/2027 and 02/2027 batches. Stage I is the computer-based Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET), and Stage II has a Physical Fitness Test, a written examination and a recruitment medical. This page gives the key facts, dates, eligibility, pattern, selection steps, pay and a preparation plan in one place, and links to detailed pages on each topic.

Current status and notification overview
The exam is active. The Navy released the Agniveer (SSR) notification for the 01/2027 and 02/2027 batches in March 2026, and the Stage I INET for SSR was held on 13 May 2026. Reports say the Stage I result was declared in September 2026, and Stage II for the 01/2027 batch is scheduled for around October 2026. Applications for this cycle are closed.
Three points matter for any aspirant reading older material:
Entry name: The posts are advertised as Agniveer (SSR), a four-year engagement, not as a regular long-term sailor entry.
Stage I is INET: Shortlisting depends on the Navy's own entrance test, not on board marks. Board marks are a fallback only if the INET cannot be held.
Vacancies are not published: The notification says the trade-wise split is set by service requirement, so no vacancy figure is available for this cycle.
This INET is the sailor-entry test and is separate from the officer-entry entrance test of the same name. Check that any pattern or syllabus you read is for the Agniveer (SSR) INET.

Eligibility
The full rules are on the Indian Navy SSR eligibility page. The summary below is what most candidates need first.
Educational qualification
Candidates need Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics from a recognised board with at least 50% aggregate. Reports of the notification also list a three-year engineering diploma or a two-year vocational course with Physics and Mathematics, each with 50%. Students who appeared in the 2025-26 Class 12 exams could apply and must show original marksheets later.
Age limit
Batch | Date of birth window (both dates inclusive) |
|---|---|
01/2027 | 1 December 2004 to 31 May 2009 |
02/2027 | 1 May 2005 to 31 October 2009 |
No category-wise age relaxation is mentioned in the notification text we could verify.
Other conditions
Marital status: Only unmarried candidates can apply, and marriage during the four-year engagement leads to dismissal.
Physical standards: The Navy's notice for the matching MR entry states a minimum height of 157 cm for men and women, and the same standards are expected for SSR. Confirm in the SSR notification.
Police verification: An adverse or missing report bars enrolment.
Application fee and how to apply
The fee is Rs. 550 plus 18% GST, which comes to Rs. 649, and it applies to Stage I only. It is non-refundable and cannot be carried to another exam. A failed payment is refunded automatically within seven working days. Multiple registrations lead to rejection without reimbursement.
Register on the official recruitment portal and fill in the application with details that match your original documents.
Upload documents: photograph, signature, Class 10 and 12 marksheets or diploma, identity proof and domicile certificate, plus an NCC certificate if you hold one.
Choose three INET city preferences. The centre is allotted by the Navy and cannot be changed later.
Pay the fee by net banking, card or UPI, then submit and keep a copy.
The photograph rules in the notice for the matching MR entry are strict: a file of 10 to 50 KB, taken in March 2026 or later, with a slate showing your name and the date. A live webcam photo is also captured. Mismatches between the application and original documents lead to cancellation.
Exam pattern
Stage I is one computer-based objective paper in Hindi and English. As reported from the notification, it has 100 questions of 1 mark each, with 25 questions each from English, Mathematics, Science and General Awareness, in 60 minutes. A wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. You must qualify in each section and in the aggregate, with pass marks fixed by the Navy.
Stage | Format | What counts |
|---|---|---|
Stage I: INET | 100 MCQs, 100 marks, 60 minutes, negative marking 0.25 | Shortlisting for Stage II, state-wise |
Stage II: PFT | 1.6 km run, squats, push-ups, sit-ups | Qualifying |
Stage II: Written exam | Same format as INET, only for those who clear the PFT | Final merit list |
Stage II: Medical | Recruitment medical | Qualifying |
What this means for you:
Accuracy matters: With 0.25 marks lost per wrong answer, random guessing in a weak section lowers your score.
Every section counts: Because sectional qualifying applies, a strong Maths score cannot cover for a failed English section.
Time is tight: 60 minutes for 100 questions is about 36 seconds each, so speed in basic topics is the priority.
Older pages may still show an earlier pattern, so follow the official notification. See the Indian Navy SSR exam pattern page for marking examples and strategy.
Syllabus summary
The Navy names the subjects and keeps the syllabus and sample papers on its recruitment website, but it does not give a long topic-wise list in the notification. The table below is a working checklist built from the subject areas and the Class 10 and 12 level of the test. It is not an official list.
Subject | Important topics |
|---|---|
English | Grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, comprehension |
Mathematics | Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry basics |
Science | Physics, chemistry and biology fundamentals from school level |
General Awareness | Current affairs, defence, history, geography, polity, sports |
Topic-wise detail is on the Indian Navy SSR syllabus page.
Selection process
Stage I, INET: Candidates are shortlisted on INET marks, separately for each batch. Cut-offs vary by state because vacancies are allotted state-wise. Ties are broken in favour of the earlier date of birth.
Physical Fitness Test: A mandatory qualifying test. The standards stated in the notice for the matching MR entry are a 1.6 km run in 6 minutes 30 seconds for men and 8 minutes 15 seconds for women, with squats, push-ups and sit-ups (20, 15 and 15 for men; 15, 10 and 10 for women).
Written examination: Held for those who clear the PFT. The merit list is prepared on these marks, ranked on an all-India basis for men and women separately.
Recruitment medical: Candidates found unfit may request one review within five days. A pre-enrolment medical follows at INS Chilka.
Candidates holding an NCC C certificate or sponsored by designated agencies may be exempt from INET, subject to verification as described in the notice.
Pay, benefits and career path
Year | Monthly package | In hand (70%) | Agniveer Corpus (30%) |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | Rs. 30,000 | Rs. 21,000 | Rs. 9,000 |
2 | Rs. 33,000 | Rs. 23,100 | Rs. 9,900 |
3 | Rs. 36,500 | Rs. 25,550 | Rs. 10,950 |
4 | Rs. 40,000 | Rs. 28,000 | Rs. 12,000 |
These figures are from the Navy's notice for the matching MR entry, and the Agniveer pay structure is common across the Navy's Agniveer entries. The Government adds an equal amount to the corpus each month. Risk and hardship, dress and travel allowances are paid on top. The notice also lists non-contributory life insurance, service medical care and 30 days of annual leave.
After four years the Navy is not obliged to retain Agniveers, and up to 25% of each batch may be re-enrolled as regular sailors at the Navy's discretion. Agniveers do not receive gratuity or pension and are not eligible for ex-servicemen status, so weigh this before applying.
How to prepare
Treat preparation as three tracks: the written test, the physical test and the medical standards.
Start with school-level basics: The paper tests Class 10 and 12 concepts, so revise NCERT Maths and Science before moving to speed drills.
Build a daily English and awareness habit: Read for 30 minutes and keep short notes on current affairs and defence news.
Train for the PFT early: Practise the 1.6 km run, squats, push-ups and sit-ups several times a week. Stage II can follow the result quickly.
Check the medical standards: Height, vision, tattoo rules and general fitness are listed in the notification.
Practise in the real format
For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt Indian Navy SSR mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to plan your revision. Keep an error log of every wrong answer and revisit it weekly. Pair mocks with the Indian Navy SSR study notes you build, and compare your score against the benchmark rules on the Indian Navy SSR cut-off page.
Cut-off reference
The Navy does not publish a category-wise cut-off table in the notification. Shortlisting depends on INET marks, vacancies in your state and the pass marks the Navy sets for each section and the aggregate. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat last year's figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them rather than a bare pass.
